I saw that thing with the cocoa butter and it looked to me more like the commenters had a problem with the interviewer asking questions of the actress that they wouldn't be asking if she were male ("oh you smell so good, what kind of products do you use?" isn't something RDJ, for example, hears all the time - or at all), and ignoring her attempts to put the conversation back onto the topic of the show she was promoting. I might be wrong (or I might have seen different commentary than you, lol).

Everyone (around me at the time) was complaining about me complaining that trigger warnings were getting overused and mis-used and we should be just a wee bit more careful and less casual with them, and look at the shit that happens over trigger warnings now, Tumblr or not.

Fucking called it.

I honestly do not understand why people complain will flame people for reading a clearly tagged triggery fic. Like, cannot they not read? What did they expect? And what is yelling at someone going to do? It's already tagged with warnings, do they honestly expect people to just not write anything that might offend them?

I'm a bit confused, are you saying they complained about being triggered by the fic after ignoring the warnings, or are you saying they complained that the warnings triggered them by mentioning the "trigger"?

Holy crap, I really wonder where all this trigger shit is going down. I'm in a mid-sized fandom (Batman/DC Comics), and I'm very active on Tumblr, and I never once ran into this. I warn for all the big triggers like abuse, violence, rape etc., but I know I've slipped up a couple times and forgot to tag some heavy content, and nobody ever yelled at me for it. Or at others I know, and I follow some pretty popular people. (The only time I ever saw tag drama, it was related to some stupid ship wank.)

I really wonder, does this accumulate in some of the really busy fandoms, like Marvel or SPN or what? I really don't see as much of that around than the complaints would suggest.

Also, what kind of asshole yells at you for something you actually DID warn for. I mean really.

that kind of shit is exactly why i refuse to put any warnings on my stuff anymore beyond "read at your own risk." if you don't warn for someone's super-obscure trigger, you're liable to get yelled at for it, just like that.

Complaining about trigger warnings seems to me like a terrible way to deal with triggers, because instead of putting it out of mind, you're still talking about it. This leads me to believe people who go on endlessly about it have no idea what it's like to be actually triggered by something.

I actually have diagnosed PTSD, and the 'trigger warnings' drive me up the wall. Just say 'squicks' or 'warnings'.

There are very few people in the world that are actually triggered by some of the things that are routinely labelled as trigger warnings.

I'm usually triggered visually - I see someone who actually looks like my rapist. Or a bad dream. Not to say that everyone is like me, but a trigger and a squick are totally different.

Yes, I see the irony in my title, but I don't want the SJWs hounding me.

If it is triggery enough to warrant a warning then the warnings themselves will be a trigger. Putting in warnings just conditions folks who are recovering from an event to expect warnings and find it harder to handle their trigger events when it confronts them in real life. It seems cruel, but not putting in warnings is kinder in the long run, gotta be cruel to be kind sometimes. You Underaged-Penguin Raper.

I'm going to cautiously agree that trigger warnings have gotten way out of control over the last few years. Obviously, stuff like rape, incest, abuse, and such should have warnings. But for things like gum (there's no way that person wasn't some kind of troll or jokester) or something seemingly inconsequential,it trivializes legitimate concerns for those who do have huge triggers. Because then they're being lumped in with the "whiners" (et all) and stuff.
