I'm a girl and I buy to myself WWE action figures... yet if I find Monster High's figures quite nice and I would buy one to myself given the chance (I don't have a fav one that I want to buy). So there's nothing wrong liking girly stuff, anon.

It's stories like this that led me to start my campaign to call all action figures and models "dolls".

Also, the similar campaign to call all comics, graphic novels, and serial art "funnybooks".

Secret 1 - Monster High

My whole life I have hated dolls and only played with action figures and other non-girly things.

I hate myself for liking these dolls. Whenever I buy them I have to refer to them as action figures to reaffirm my masculinity. I'm female, but I've never been girly and I wish I hated these dolls but they're really awesome looking and I can't help but love them.

Liking dolls doesn't necessarily make you less masculine. I honestly see action figures and dolls as the same thing, and growing up my brothers and sister and I all had a mix of both and played with them all. No big thang.

Though I do think it's a problem that you are so upset about this.

OP, it's seriously fine to be masculine as fuck and like something that's "girly". It doesn't subvert your masculinity.

Also, I love Monster High dolls, I just got Elissabat today, she's adorable.

Those dolls are awesome, it's no wonder they caught your eye.

But it sounds like you have a lot of gender more issues to work your way through. You'll probably be a lot happier once you realize that what's "girly" and what's not is totally arbritary. A lot of things that are "girly" in one country are masculine in another.

Liking or disliking dolls is not a biological masculine or feminine trait. It is a gendered trait because society dictates it as such.

You only feel the need to "reaffirm your masculinity," because society tells you people with masculine traits should not like dolls as dolls are for "weak and girly" people.

I think you need to start releasing the self gendered roles/boxes you have created and remember that you can like whatever the fuck you want. You can still be masculine and like dolls, no matter what societies ideologies say.

i guess that depends how you see masculinity. hiding your own interests in favor of what some vague mass of people say you should and shouldn't like doesn't seem very masculine to me, anyway.

Right there with you, OP. I had a Barbie when I was a kid... because it came with a horse, and I wanted the horse. The doll just sort of sat around being unused. (I didn't have My Little Pony stuff either, despite liking horses, because they were "dolled up" too much to look like the real thing.)

I've so far managed to refrain from getting any of the MH dolls except Torelai for my girlfriend, because she's a cat person and mentioned that the MH dolls were kinda cool, and so as a laugh I thought I'd get her the catgirl that was just being released at the time. But when doing my research into whether or not they had any sort of cat-monster dolls, I came across the twins. Who look really cool. And then since I'd had to go on Amazon to get Torelai, more MH stuff started popping up in my product recommendations, and I spotted Robecca (steampunk robot girl?!) and Venus (PLANT GIRL YES YES YES) and... I have never done the doll thing in my life and am rather baffled by this line making me want to do so now.

Femininity isn't bad, you know. It's not weak or stupid. Also, here's something that will blow your fucking mind. Being more feminine does not make you less masculine. They're not really opposites when you think about it for too long. Mostly because we can hardly define the two concepts anyway.

Anyway, this secret kind of pissed me off and I don't even like those dolls. Sorry. :/

I just wanted to link to this post because it really resonated with me on a personal level about dealing with the whole "feminine = bad" thing.

It took me a hell of a long time to realize that being female is awesome. :) It really sucks the way we're all supposed to know that when we're constantly beaten down as impressionable children with the assumption that being girls or girly is stupid.

Dude, it's not a balance and no one is keeping score. Liking one feminine thing isn't going to subtract points from your masculinity cred-- if you think it is, then yeah, that's internalized misogyny.

Having internalized that dichotomy isn't your fault, though, but it's something that you can work towards getting rid of. Honestly, I sincerely wish you luck-- when you realize that you can like whatever you want without having to feel bad about it, you'll be much happier.
