I mean, I think that people are right to want more diversity in media.

But I also thought it was kinda odd that THIS MOVIE was the one that tumblr singled out.

I mean... why not The Hobbit or any of the other movies that are blindingly white?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Because 'Orlando Bloom is a hottie, squeee', of course.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I almost want to say that it's because The Hobbit and the bunch of recent superhero movies are sausage fests.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's what my money's on.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. But I think people decided to hate this one early on, first because "Wow, lazy character designs, they look exactly like Rapunzel!" (I'm pretty sure Belle and Ariel had the same face model) and then because it wasn't The Snow Queen and it had goofy animal/snowman sidekicks. Now people are nitpicking about a minor animation goof. I think tumblr just decided to hate Frozen.

Well, the character design WAS kinda lazy and uninspiring tbh. But the story was still good and the characters were fun so I didn't mind too much.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed on both accounts. It's lazy but not a reason to hate everything and declare boycotts.

a minor animation goof

There are actually a ton. A lot of clipping and shit that first year college students would know better than to do.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:22 am (UTC)(link)

Which, besides the hair and the thumb? Honestly curious.

I mean, there's also the fact that a lot of animates movies have goofs up the wazoo and no one cares to complaint.

Year, then there's the thing where during the LOR (I may be incorrect about this, please correct me if I am) they wouldn't allow POC to play any of the (might have been background) hobbits.

And the whole 'KATNISS IS TOTALLY A WOC ANYONE WHO SAYS ANYTHING ELSE IS WHITEWASHING' thing got a bit out of hand, but the studio did only ask for white actress. Sure it'd be neat if Katniss was played as a WOC, but it's not canon and speculation is just headcanoninh.

It's situations where a character is completely open to be played as non-white yet the only ones that are allowed to be chosen from are white when it gets a little 'racist-y'

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2013-12-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Like, Katniss COULD be a WOC, but she isn't DEFINITELY a WOC.

But I 100% agree that it was shitty that the studio was ONLY looking for white actresses when it could have been a role that WOC should have been able to audition for.

But the fact that Katniss is played by a white actress isn't white washing because the character wasn't necessarily a WOC originally.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
So agreed on this. I see tumblr posts where it's like "Katniss is a WOC and here's all the proof."

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
you forget how people complained about Rue being black when CLEARLY SHE WASN'T MENTIONED AS BLACK IN THE BOOKS!!1!!!!1

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
That was pretty revolting. A lot of those people had no problem throwing racist slurs at a young girl, and the most popular justification was "But she reminded Katniss of Prim, who had light skin and blonde hair!"

Uh, yeah, but her skin and color weren't the things that reminded Katniss of Prim.

(Anonymous) - 2013-12-10 00:58 (UTC) - Expand

Whoops, meant to say skin and hair color.

Seriously, a whole generation that fails at reading comprehension... it makes me cry.

My sister got on my back about the whole "KATNISS IS A WOC" thing, and I think is still kind of pissed that I insisted that olive-skinned COULD mean a white person. I don't disagree she could be a WOC and that the whole "white actresses only" thing is pretty shitty, but I don't think that the books say explicitly "Katniss is a WOC" and it doesn't make the movies themselves terrible.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
all i can think is that the people who think olive-skinned can't equal white have never met anyone from the mediterranean region of europe before. one of my coworkers from my last job was greek and she got dark as hell in the summer when she was out in the sun, but she was still white.

Because blond Europeans are a more comfortable target than brown-haired Americans, assuming you're not European. You can subtly tie them into Nazis, while assuring yourself that you're not a Nazi and are therefore better than them.

Are you fucking kidding me. And most of the cast in The Hobbit isn't even American.
feotakahari: (Default)

[personal profile] feotakahari 2013-12-10 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, fair point. But even if the cast isn't American, the complainers probably are. The cast of The Hobbit is pretty white, but there's nothing obviously "Nordic" about hobbits, and the Germanic roots of dwarves aren't very well-in popular culture, so they're not as convenient a target.

(I admit I stated all that in the most extreme way possible, but I seriously think what touched this off was specifically that Frozen used Northern European characters. I don't remember any sort of outcry over race regarding Tangled.)

Because they like The Hobbit, so it's blinding whiteness (and maleness, which actually would technically put it below the female-led Frozen on the Social Justice Scale of Rightness) is okay. This is a thing I have noticed about SJWs: if a show the don't like is problematic they will hate on it and call out its fans for liking it, but if a show they like is problematic that's totally okay cause you can still like problematic things and hey look how hot the guys are. Same with celebrities, really: if someone they don't like, like Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus, says something non-SJW approved that celebrity is a terrible person and should feel terrible, but if one of their favorites says something just as bad or worse it's all 'La la la I can't hear you."

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I noticed this with Pacific Rim. Hey, it did some good things but it actually did score poor on others. Including female representation. People invented a new test just to defend it. Which, I liked but Mako doesn't even really pass the Mako Mori test. You still have the issue that there was only two female characters and only one spoke. I've known shonen manga with better female representation than that.

Which brings me to another point: you can like things and still find faults because I love Pacific Rim.

Because tumblr picks and chooses what to be activists about based on what they like? They're not critical of things unless it's something they themselves aren't interested in much of the time.
