Same! Well, not an addiction or anything. I don't think it's bad. I just love me some sidekicks/background characters. Almost every time I have zero to negative interest in the star/hero and really just want more on the other characters.

Holy shit, is that the hot monk from Vikings?

...Are you me, anon? I love side characters!

And ensemble casts, where everyone is pretty much a side character to everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I see a lot of really awesome characters in there.

Honestly this is pretty common even for creators. I have started so many stories and gotten more interested in my minor characters than the boring hero.

You might wanna check out stories with ensemble casts, where there isn't really one main character and everyone contributes equally/has their own interesting subplot.

I love the side characters! Though I hadn't thought of Haymitch/Seneca Crane as a ship before. (Admittedly that's mostly because I ship Effie/Hatmitch), but it could be an interesting ship. Do you have any fic recs?

Who is the woman in blue in the corner? I know who she is, but my brain isn't letting me accesses the information. I hate when this happens.

I don't mean this in a bad way (I mean, I mostly focus on secondary characters myself), but I think the major draw is probably that we don't know as much about them, and get to invent a lot more fanon that we know won't be contradicted by canon. This is especially true in terms of shipping: secondary characters get way less canon love interests, so you can ship away without getting jossed.

(I kind of laugh at Grantaire being a secondary character though, since Enjolras/Grantaire is by far the most popular pairing in the Les Mis fandom. I mean technically both of them are secondary characters per the book and even the movie, but you wouldn't know it from the fandom, which basically ignores Jean Valjean).

I'm like that too. I find that protagonists spend so much time having Important Hero Thoughts and Serious Hero Problems that they never get to be goofy weirdos with ordinary problems, so I don't identify with them as much. I also love uncovering secrets, which secondary characters are more likely to be keeping from the audience. In contrast to your secret, though, Phoenix is one of my favorite AA characters, but that's just more reason to love those games IMO.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, me too, definitely. My current favorite character is extremely minor and I'm torn between being upset at the lack of fic, and having the time of my life building him up beyond what we got in canon. Minor characters are super fun.

Secret 6 - Side characters, various media

[Picture is Seamus Finnigan, as portrayed by Devon Murray, from the "Harry Potter" movies; Grantaire, as portrayed by George Blagden, from the 2012 film "Les Misérables"; Mrs. Hudson, as portrayed by Una Stubbs, from the BBC TV series "Sherlock"; Barbie, from the CGI animated movie "Toy Story 3"; Inspector Lestrade, as portrayed by Rupert Graves, from the BBC TV series "Sherlock"; Jet from the animated TV series "Avatar: The Last Airbender"; Minerva McGonagall, as portrayed by Dame Maggie Smith, from the "Harry Potter" movies; two characters I can't identify, sorry, but one of them is aiming at something with a large gun; Effie Trinket, as portrayed by Elizabeth Banks, wearing her butterfly dress from the "Hunger Games" movie adaptations; Johanna Mason, as portrayed by Jena Malone, from the "Hunger Games" movie adaptations; two other characters from the "Hunger Games" whom I can't identify; and Adrian Andrews from the "Ace Attorney" videogames.]

I have a painful addiction to side characters, to the point where I really don't care about the heroes all that much. [picture of Hunger Games characters I couldn't identify] Bonus Secret: I totally ship it.

I love a good many of these characters, and I do get where you're coming from, but rarely do I not love main characters as well so I can't entirely agree.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Adrian Andrews is my fave! I usually get invested in major characters, but the PW/AA series is one of the ones where I get the side character addiction. (My other favorites are Wocky Kitaki, Machi Tobaye, and the DeLites.)

Sort of same? See, my thing is that the heroes have to fit certain confines [generally personality traits], while the side characters can be pretty much anything and thus more fun.

At least, from what I've seen.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Annnnnnd now I kind of ship Seneca and Haymitch. LOL

(I also love Effie/Haymitch, because the vitriol between them would lead to great angry sex.)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I love ensemble casts. Though I love a fair few heroes as well. I tend to have particular character types that I'm drawn to regardless of their position within the story, though.

Funnily enough, when I'm writing original fic, I very often can't write from the hero's POV for some reason. I mean, when I'm running the story in my head just for myself, I spend most of it in their POV no problem. But when I actually try to write, I almost always have to sidestep into one of the other character's heads to get traction. And the danger with doing that is that once I start in someone else's head, the story starts to get warped a bit by their perceptions of it. So sometimes I sidestep again, hop into someone else's head for another while, but that does it again. So I either play musical chairs with the POV, or accept that I'm probably not going to have things stay on track the way the hero POV initially intended.

This is possibly the reason why the story that ends up written is almost never the same story that I'd originally intended to write.

I had to double take for a sec because this is how I read your secret:
to the point I really don't care about the herpes all that much.

haha oops

Anyways, side characters can totally be the best part of a thing. Or the saving grace of terrible things where the protagonist(s) suck.

that's pretty common I think. For example, R is easily one of the most popular characters in Les Mis and half of THE otp.

I read Romeo and Juliet and found myself caring MUCH more about Benvolio and Mercutio, so I know where you're coming from lol. I think it's because creators often try to make their protagonist appealing to as wide a variety of tastes as possible, and that often translates into "bland and generic." Whereas side characters can be as quirky and weird as the creator feels like making them, because the success of the work overall doesn't hang on THEIR ability to attract a wider audience.

This was me with Green Lantern in general. I couldn't give a shit about Hal, Guy, Kyle, or John most of the time (though they each have their merits); I was more interested in the side characters most of all, incl. the other Corps.

Needless to say, I gave up on the fandom and the series not that long ago because it just got to be too frustrating for me. Ah well. Ya' win some, and ya' lose some.

This is how I feel about Naruto. The only main character I give a shit about is Kakashi while all of my other favorite characters are secondary ones like Gai and Lee.

When I was involved in fandom, I almost always latched onto the secondary characters. For the longest time, it was extremely lonely since everyone else in fandom were deeply involved with what turned out to be the big ships with the protag.

I eventually drifted away. I'm glad that maybe that's changing now? Hard to say but eh. Whatev.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I hear you OP. Very seldom is the main character of any work my favorite (if I have a favorite at all). Usually it's one of the secondary characters or in the case of an ensemble cast one of the characters that isn't the designated hero.
