I haven't bothered watching 3x01 and I probably won't ever get around to it, but on my dash I saw a gifset where Mrs. Hudson thought John was gay. So it appears the show is STILL making jokes about that.

Oh dear, I'm guessing that you didn't like today's episode then?

Although I'm not quite sure why it's apparently homophobic to rebuff constant assumptions that he's gay. It's not like he gets angry at the people who assume, just exasperated.

You know... in the real world most people don't like when you assume they are gay. and it isn't like he is protesting that much or in situations that are that weird.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's homophobic...I would assume that if he wants pussy yet everyone assumes he wants dick it would be harder for him to get pussy. So naturally he would want to correct that assumption.

Yeah, I think you're assigning a level of hostility to his correction of misconceptions that doesn't actually exist in universe. Granted, I haven't seen the first episode of season 3 yet, but I really doubt he's changed that much.

How is it homophobic to want people to not know you are gay? He does not say, "Ewww gay people!"

I can only think of three instances where he says it. The first episode where they are having dinner. He says that to establish to Sherlock he is not looking for a romantic interest.

The second is with Irene where he says it so she knows he is not romantically involved (or wants to be) with Sherlock.

And the third time when he is reading the newspaper. And that was more of a, "Stupid newspapers are implying I am gay and in a relationship with Sherlock." Which, guess what. If someone is straight and wants to pursue relationships with women, a newspaper implying he involved with Sherlock may put a damper on that.

And for all of these, he isn't making a huge SHOUT FROM THE ROOFTOPS protest. He is talking one on one with someone.

I don't know how it was in the U.K. military, but I'd imagine someone who was in the U.S. military in the bad old days* might have offensively vehement denial reflexes for quite a while afterwards.

*When it comes to LGBT issues, I think the bad old days begin 5-10 years ago and cover almost everything earlier.

Also to me the issue is less with John as a character and more with the writers and the weird kind of queerbaity feel of those scenes.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
So now it's "homophobic" to say "I'm not gay," when you're straight, if someone thinks you're gay.

Oh. Okay.

This isn't a show I've rewatched obsessively but I can't remember John ever seeming disgusted by the assumption that he's gay, rather than just annoyed that he keeps having to correct people about his relationship with Sherlock. The tone of it was never overly "NO HOMO" to me.

It annoys me too. It's not even necessarily the character that bothers me. I'm just sick of the writers doing it all the time.

I agree with a lot of what the other commenters are saying so I'm having trouble figuring out why it bothers me so much but it is definitely annoying to me.

So now it's homophobic to correct people who make incorrect assumptions about you? Battle on, brave SJW!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gay, and I hardly think it's homophobic to correct people who think you're gay. I have the same awkward reaction when people ask if so-and-so is my boyfriend. Or, for that matter, if a platonic friend is a significant other.

Of course, it would be nice for the show to have real non-comical gay characters - and whatshername did bug me when she claimed she was a lesbian but was in love with Sherlock, that was more problematic than John's behavior.

Secret 6 - Sherlock (BBC TV series), John Watson (character), Martin Freeman (actor)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-02 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Sherlock Holmes, as portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, and John Watson, as portrayed by Martin Freeman, from the BBC TV series "Sherlock".]

All of John's pathetic, homophobic 'I'm not gay how dare you' protestations make me really really dislike him. I'm not sure if it's partially because Freeman's such an asshole in real life, or because I've never seen anyone in fandom who doesn't adore John, but I really don't have any more patience for all his shit.

I'll still watch season 3 because I'm bad at letting things go unfinished, but I can't love the show as much as I wish I could and it's frustrating.

I can't even like the fic as much as I want to. In gen fic he's always characterized as perfect - his canon homophobia conveniently forgotten or excused - and in slash he's almost always either openly and comfortable gay or bisexual (which is Out Of Character as hell, I just can't buy it) or Still Really Straight But Magically Turned Gay For You, (which doesn't usually bother me if it's written well, just with this character I can't take it.)

[personal profile] nan 2014-01-02 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I know, John just corrects people, right? He doesn't say 'lol no homo gross' or anything like that? It's annoying that the writers keep doing this but I would blame them.

I mean, I don't watch the show and Freeman certainly isn't one of my favorite people but that's just the sense I got about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's bad (maybe a little overdone) but then only time I really like "those dudes are gay" comments are when the men in question could possibly be gay. Like in Death Note, when Misa made that comment about Light and L, who are never shown to be straight and are really interested in each other. It's not a canon relationship, and I feel like the author is opening the audience up to the possibility of interpreting their relationship that way.

With John and Sherlock, John's "no, not gay!" and dating women kind of reduce the comments to only humor, though I suppose it's not impossible to interpret their relationship that way.

I don't think saying "I'm not gay" when people constantly assume you're gay is homophobic. Also, doesn't he have a sister who is gay and married (well, divorced now), who he's only somewhat estranged from because of her alcoholism?

I'm just thinking as someone who's gotten mistaken for being in a relationship with my best friend (who is a guy; I'm a girl), that's annoying enough. If people assumed I was in a relationship and of a different sexual orientation, that would be even more irritating.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's not homophobic to be upset when people think you're gay when you're not. Everyone wants to be identified and acknowledged correctly. John is a single heterosexual and he doesn't want his love interests to be dissuaded by thinking he's in a relationship with anyone, male or female.

Yes, Martin Freeman has made some shitty, offensive jokes (and I take them as jokes, not as indicators of his actual feelings since he's deliberately offensive) but that's him, not John Watson.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't remember the character being particularly homophobic from when I watched a few episodes of the show. But John did annoy the shit out of me! That's why I only watched a few episodes. But sadly I'm still not "someone in the fandom who doesn't adore John" since hell no I am not in that fandom. But I don't adore John, that's for sure!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Same as others I really don't think he was being homophobic rather than exasperated that no one seems to believe him when he says they aren't together like that.

Regardless, why not try some Mystrade instead? It's LOVELY :D

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
So saying "I'm not gay" (particularly in the context where one is, you know, hetero), is homophobia now?

Troll?

(and by the way, if the character didn't say anything at all either way, I'm pretty sure somebody would have been accused of queer bating by now. LOLSJ! )
