I said I still love the films. They're just about humans and not hobbits. I suppose they could have hired actual little people like Warwick Davis, but I know that with a budget that size they needed names.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Now I just had this random thought that SJWs might have pissed on the films for not hiring actual dwarfs (people with the medical condition, I mean) or whatever.

...were there even SJWs back in 2001?

lmao, good one.

(Though being completely serious I never had this issue with the films. Maybe I'm just easily fooled, maybe I just get into the head-space of 'MIDDLE EARTH, MOTHERFUCKER!' and everything else fades away, but I feel like LOTR did an excellent job with the visuals and special effects and scale. Sorry it didn't work for you.)

Elijah Wood probably is a bit too 'pretty' (and honestly, he should look to be around a similar age as Merry and Sam, and Pippin should be the one who looks the youngest), yeah, but I disagree that the forced perspective and everything to make them look smaller didn't work!

I just came back from New Zealand, where I did a few Lord of the Rings tours, and they actually put a lot of work into it - the Hobbiton set has full-size Hobbit hole exteriors as well as ones that are scaled down for when Gandalf is in front of them, complete with scaled props, they actually made two soundstages for Bag End (human-scale for the Hobbit actors, smaller for Gandalf, again), and even things like filming the scene where they escape the Shire had special consideration - using specific sizes of trees, as well as artificial ones, because some trees were too narrow and would look tiny next to the Hobbits.

I think one of the biggest issues (heh, 'biggest') is that they did actually change the size of the Hobbits compared to the books? They were aiming for a height of about four-ish feet, IIRC (there's a height chart which has Bilbo and the dwarves, and Bilbo is listed as 4'2" - which is only three inches shorter than Bullroarer Took), which is a fair bit bigger than book!Hobbits. On the other hand, trying to realistically have a character be three feet tall instead of four would have looked... really awkward, I think. That extra foot makes all the difference!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the books made a point that beyond tough feet with curly hair on them and pointed ears, hobbits looked just like humans, only smaller.

Really, about the only problem would be the whitewashing, since the Harfoots are supposed to be brown skinned, as the most common hobbit, and only Fallohides were fair skinned, and only Tooks had any Fallohide blood.

But the books don't specify a non-human look for them o_o They're meant to be pudgy, short, with curly hair and furry feet. But Tolkien never said anything about them being ugly or having an outrageous look.

The corn is clearly regular-sized corn that isn't fully grown yet and that's why it's not super-huge compared to hobbits. What I want to knw is what a New World cultivar is doing in a wland based on Europe.

It's really scenes like this:

http://25.media.tumblr.com/13204672f73c4d557b047f11fd4f74ae/tumblr_mq7qifs4vV1san7deo1_500.gif

I mean, if you saw that without knowing, would you assume those weren't humans? All the fauna is in scale.

http://www.freewebs.com/lord_ofthe_rings/TTT/TTTSamFrodRangers.jpg

And this. They are about 5' at least in this scene. Anyway, it works for me being about young men. It's not that important.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Should they not look like humans, though? Hobbits as a race being an offshoot branch of Men and all. Sure, they couldn't make them as small-looking as they probably should have by book-standards, but the general appearance of the characters didn't bother me.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that illustration is what a hobbit was supposed to look like either. And wasn't there some reference towards the end of LOTR (the book, and it's been years since I read them) about how, in looks if not demeanor, Frodo was becoming more and more elf-like.

[personal profile] rbhudson 2014-01-22 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I think they should look younger, more childlike. I thought Elijah was cast perfectly, considering Frodo is the oldest hobbit in the fellowship and he was only like 18.

Well, not gonna lie when I saw the fellowship of the ring as a kid I never noticed the height difference. But now I really notice it. Since Hobbits don't actually exist of course they are still gonna look human unless you computer animate them like Gollum.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
But according to the books, hobbits do look like perfectly normal humans except for their furry feet. I do agree about inconsistency in size, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
They could at least not look like little kids. But small people must ne funny and childhish, amirite? No one would like them if they behaved like they did in canon, let's turn them into comic relief. Gimli too, zomg funny dwarves lol

The forced perspective not working for you is one thing but Hobbits aren't supposed to look like a different species. They're just shorter with hairy feet. They're also really the proxy for the reader in the book, with the actual humans being more like classical heroes. So them looking like people is fine for me.
