Because of tags? Does ff.net not have tags? Or are they just more stringent on their tagging system or something.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's character listings. FFN only lets you select ... four? I think? Instead of listing apparently every character in the story, as this fanfic appears to.

FF.net has character tags and genre tags, both of which you pick from a drop-down list. They recently expanded this so that you can have a bunch of character tags and indicate up to two pairings among them, but I believe you're still limited to two genre tags.

[personal profile] dinogrrl 2014-02-02 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
FF.net doesn't have tags. They have preset categories like genre, language, rating, fandom, and characters, so you don't get paragraphs of tags like you sometimes see on AO3. Which can be good or bad, depending how you view it.
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-02-02 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh. Still easier to find specific kinks or plot devices I want on AO3. And the crazy taggers are not that common.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
These are my feelings, too.
dreemyweird: (murky)

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2014-02-02 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
This. IDK, maybe it's more prominent in some fandoms than in others, but I find the AO3 tag system very handy. And I don't have any problems with over-tagging. The only tag-related problems that really grind my gears are a) people tagging romance as gen, b) people tagging BBC Sherlock stories as ACD Canon, and c) people sticking the "Fan Art" tag on their works that do not contain any fanart.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That's been my experience, too. Plus, I like the beige background. Over-tagging must depend on the fabdom, because I don't come across it that much. When I do, I usually either don't bother reading the story or I just ignore the tags (outside of a quick skim to look for certain things I might want to avoid).

[personal profile] nightscale 2014-02-02 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, I've seen OTT tagging from time to time, but for the most part I rarely come across it and while I don't hate ff.net(depending on the fandom it's easier to find stuff over there because the Ao3 side is non-existent) I find Ao3's search function to be better.

Good luck trying to fight the power, OP. I gather the owners are academics who crosscheck fandom enthusiasms or lingo or whatever the fuck. It's annoying as hell.

[personal profile] spacebabie 2014-02-02 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That is one reason why I prefer to find fic at FFNet...the other reason is that they have a section for Crossovers. So if you want a fic that is fandom A and specifically Fandom A you will find it in Fandom a and not one fic for Fandom A and five fics for Fandom A/B and three fics for Fandom A/C and seven for Fandom A/B/C.

I don't ever use character tags to find fics on AO3 because everyone tags every single character that appears and it isn't useful. Shipping tags are still helpful, though, as are rating or genre tags.

I always worry I'm not using ENOUGH tags on AO3. I get sort of intimidated in fact when I see fics that are popular with loads of tags like...somehow that relates to their popularity.

I love tags and tag the fuck out of my work on AO3. I feel I should almost go anon to admit this...

I wish other ficcers would tag more, not less. Every minor character, every plot device, every kink, have at it. There have been times I've missed really good fics because they didn't tag enough. I could have read them years ago if they'd tagged.

Searching by pairings and/or by kudos is my current favourite way to find fics.

I agree. I hate tag stupidity.

The plus side? When I see a fic with that many tags, I skip it with no compunction. IMO Tag-o-rhea is Ao3's parallel to FFnet's "I suck at summeries."
