I like this headcanon tbh.

I don't know why this is a secret, but it's an interesting topic. I was really confused on why Kristoff didn't have a real family, when he clearly had, err. People. In the very opening scene. They didn't pay attention to him, no, but in those days it was normal for kids to help out with work so that didn't strike me as odd. Is there a canon implication that he was left behind and forgotten? I never got the sense that he, as a kid, felt that he was being left by himself.

It does seem weird that the trolls "adopted" him. It's an interesting theory, maybe the trolls did alter his memories to make him think he didn't have a real family.

But he still works as an ice salesman, right? So surely he still knows those Saami-inspired people.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
It was odd because no one was paying attention to the point they would have trampled him had he not moved.

He's sitting alone by the fire when the royal family rushes to the trolls, so he was definitely not with anyone.

I thought Jennifer Lee said he was an orphan...which...I dunno, I like the stealing children idea better.

This is a common theory on tumblr. So you're not alone, OP.

I was going to ask about this

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-03-09 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember seeing, a while back, a lot of people speculating about why Kristoff is with the trolls and not a family or something? i.e. the implications of kidnapping, memory wiping, working children, etc.

A lot of that ended when a Sami poster got pissed off about Sami portrayals in the movie and used 'cutting off Kristoff from his Sami community' as one of the points, or at least that was around when I stopped seeing it so much.

So I'm not sure how/why this is a secret when as far as I know, it's actually a fairly popular headcanon/fanon.

the trolls were completely awful in general and the movie would've been better off overall without them and their god-awful song.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-03-09 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree.

The movie could have done without that stupid musical number, imho. It's almost a 'Big Lipped Alligator Moment', ughhhh.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
agreed.

I wouldn't have minded trolls, per se - they are big in Scandinavian folklore, after all. but they were just portrayed so awkwardly. They were pretty forgettable, luckily, but I would've rather seen them a bit more menacing or at least less horribly goofy.

the bestiality joke in their song was kinda funny though

Yes. I get it was supposed to be about accepting someone you love for their flaws and to be a contrast to Love is an Open Door but I don't care. I hate the Trolls and their song.

Agreed.

I like the rest of the movie but the troll song could have been left out for the better.

I just thought they were pointless. And I hated their song.

Echoing sentiments that the movie would've been better without the trolls and their song.

Well... actually their first appearance where they were mostly serious I didn't mind.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
yup. pity because they weren't bad at all in the beginning. a bit goofy looking, but eh, it's disney... gotta let that go to some degree. but the song? the song just tipped them over into "ridiculous/annoying". we already had olaf for that.

Hmm... Well, I did wonder where his family was so this clears that up. I actually find this much more interesting than him being an orphan or being 'lost' and the trolls taking him in. I sort of wish that had been further explained in the film, but I could get behind this.

Actually, I loathed the trolls because of how pushy they were. (Dat song...urg.) It probably didn't help that I was (stupidly) blindsided by the romance and thought for once Disney wasn't going to go that route. I thought Anna and Kristoff were just going to be bff's so when the trolls started pushing them together I just wanted to scream "LEAVE THEM ALONE".

Yeah, it really bugged me when Kristoff seemed to have a family of some sort and then he wanders off to follow the royals to the trolls, etc and then it's just like...we see him later as an ice salesman and he tells Anna that the trolls are his family and...

...dude, you just rolled up on them when you were a kid and you obviously were in good shape before that (good clothes, healthy enough to cut the ice, with his own reindeer, etc)...why the hell did you need the trolls to take you in?

It really bothered me. So this headcanon works for me.

[personal profile] truxillogical 2014-03-10 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Y'know what? I like this.

The trolls clearly have no concept of or appreciation for human boundaries. At some point in their song, they even sing that they should "get the fiance out of the way," so they've also got no problem with getting rid of something that hinders the way they want things to work out, without worrying about the emotions of the people in question.

Yup. This fits.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I hate this headcanon. It's fucking stupid, and the way Tumblr has creamed itself over it annoys me.

He worked with ice from a young age. There was literally no way he could avoid his family if he were. They would have found him the moment he returned to town. Not to mention, I can't buy Frozen Heart as an edited memory given Kristoff is barely even the focus. He's nearly trampled and left behind--they literally don't acknowledge him.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
But he was confirmed to be an orphan? I hate the trolls too (and their shitty song) but I thought it was obvious in the movie that he had no family? I mean, in the beginning I thought the men had picked him up and let him join their workforce but then they totally left him behind? They finished their ice harvesting and took off on their wooden thingy (forgot what it was) and didn't even look back at the kid they'd left alone so I don't think they necessarily cared about an orphan. I'm okay with headcanons though.

Although IMO you don't need more reason to hate the trolls beyond looking at their shitty song. "Get the fiancé out of the way and and the whole thing will be fixed!" Sounded eerily like they wanted to murder Hans wtf? Also "And by the way I don’t see no ring!" is the stupidest part cause Anna was wearing gloves throughout the song. Of fucking course you won't see a ring.

The Director already debunked this.

She was answering questions on twitter and shot this theory down.

Sorry, but I am so over grimdark interpretations of children's films.
