At that age I had the maturity to make the decision that I didn't want to do anything sexual with an adult. Do you think the adults thought "oh, she's a mature adult, she can make that decision if she wants" and respected my decision? Fuck, no. They may have been attracted to me, but they saw me as a child who didn't have the right to say no to an adult and they were mad and tried to "punish" me for rejecting them.

Then the man can wait until the girl is eighteen, if they're in the U.S., before initiating any kind of romantic relationship with her. Or until the girl is of age wherever they are. (There are some countries where the age of consent is low enough to make me rage, but in some of those places women don't always have a choice about who to have sex with or when anyway, so it's not quite the same problem.)

And he should probably discourage her as much as possible from spending time with him until then, while avoiding the "because I can't control myself/because I don't want to hurt you" romantic bullshit that gets thrown around in fanfic and romance novels, because that makes it seem like he's being noble, instead of just refraining from being a total sleazebag.

The same would go for a woman and a boy who were "in love." I would also assume that any adult who was romantically or sexually attracted to a thirteen year old had issues of some kind. Once someone's in their twenties, age gaps cease to bother me so long as both parties are consenting/there's no other power imbalance (bosses, professors, etc) going on.

That reminds me of Antonio Machado and his wife. He married her when she was 15 (I think they met when she was 13), they had a happy marriage, loved each other so much and then she died when she was only 18 years old.

Anyways, it was pretty shocking for me when I learned that he married someone so young.

Actually, the most common age of consent in the USA is 16. (Age of consent laws are different from state to state.)

Sorry, but no, a thirteen year old regardless of gender is not old enough to understand the full weight of 'being in love'. I knew this one fourteen year old girl who was dating an eighteen year old guy. Doesn't seem that big an age difference, and she swore up and down she was ~omg so in love omg~. She hit seventeen and dumped his ass so quick, and to this day regrets it/doesn't understand why she was ever so love with him in the first place.

That's the thing ,you ARE a different person as an older teen than you are as a young one. THAT is the time you start figuring out who you are, and what defines you. An adult should be no where near them sexually, period.

When people advocate for such drastically lower ages of consent, I sometimes wonder if they remember being 13.

I remember being 13 and thinking that I could totally take ownership of my sexual decisions. I also think I probably would have made some terrible choices if I had been in the position to make such decisions in the first place.

But then, when I was 13, I was one of the very few people in my school who thought of the age of consent as a good idea, because back then I was convinced everyone around me was a dumbass. Growing up meant realizing I was, too, even if it wasn't in the same way.

Actually, there's not a lot of evidence for the attraction to younger females being "natural" at all. All our primate cousins have a tendency to choose their partners on proven progeny, meaning they're usually older and have had offspring before. I've been more inclined to believe the attraction to youth alone in certain cultures has been almost entirely socialized because of previous social systems making it a necessity to choose young brides. Some of those things can carry over into new systems.

That's not to say it's a necessarily WRONG feeling to have. It's just not really "natural".
