Inspired by #6 - What is F!S to you?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
What kind of comments do you leave and what kind of secrets do you post? What do you get out of being here and what do you think it should be like?

Personally, I comment with my first reaction to the secret, so what I say depends what the secret is. I don't think I've ever posted a secret looking for sympathy or compassion. I mostly just want a reaction or discussion. I never thought negative comments were meant to be taken seriously and I always liked the laid back sarcasm this community has.

I don't post secrets anymore -- too much effort. I also don't comment on most secrets, unless they're at least tangentially related to my interests.

To me F!S is that cool place with lots of cool people and some shitheads.

Re: Inspired by #6 - What is F!S to you?

I leave comments on secrets about fandoms I'm in, or the occasional thread when there is a one-liner just going begging. I don't think the place is anything deeper than just a time killer. I agree I've seen any of the supposedly mean spirited comments as being anything other than jokes. Frankly I'm more upset when I see people complaining in the first comment thread above the secrets. Generally it is people who lost a fight and now are going off to try and get it shut down because they can't take a loss and can't think of any other way of winning.

F!S = Daily fandom newsletter with occasionally-interesting commentary; good place to find out about music and books I never would have heard of otherwise, and sometimes there's wank to laugh at.

I usually only comment when I feel like I have something witty to say, which is not as often as I'd like.

My comments aren't usually very meaty and I don't engage in a lot of conversations. A quick hit and run approach, I guess?

I usually don't initially comment on the secrets themselves, but I revisit them after the discussions get going.

And yeah, most of my secrets are for reaction or discussion too. Also probably not 100% serious or my actual beliefs. I also love the assumptions commenters make; they're usually hilariously wrong.

I keep on coming back for the mostly laided back atmosphere, the little sustained wank (like the wank usually just keeps to one day or two, it usually isn't drawn out), and fairly varied discussion and members, but not so much for the secrets themselves.

Anon commenting is another big draw too, because I'm actually a giant wuss.

f!s is like this group of cool (and some less cool) people you wanna hang out with and impress except you don't really know how and you don't want to screw it up so you're always second-guessing what you're gonna say
and then one day you decide that fuck it, it's not like their opinion of you can get any lower, so you say what you really think without giving a shit about the consequences
and that's when you realize that some of them actually like you and agree with you, and you're relieved and perplexed at the same time

I think it's fine the way it is! f!s, I mean.

As to my own participation, I'm not sure I'm the best judge of this (the general picture is probably more obvious from the other people's point of view), but I think that ultimately it comes down to a real lot of Holmesian posts, an occasional monologue on my love towards Murder Rooms, and some weird opinions on the subjects I'm interested in.

As a rule, my interests are shared by a few people/shared by nobody, and I, in turn, am indifferent towards the things f!s folks tend to be passionate about (fandom things, too). Whatever, I don't mind talking to 0.001 people - I'm happy as long as there is someone to talk to.

I usually try to be reasonable and understanding when engaging in heated discussions, but I think there are many people who dislike me. IDK why. I'm not sure I feel bad about it.

I don't think it's due to the comm's negativity, though; I feel like f!s is a pretty nice place. It's like a multifandom soup, allowing cross-fandom&general conversations - there aren't many comms like this.

Also, I post a lot of secrets about obscure canons. But that's because my fandoms are obscure. The only exception is the ACD Canon+certain Holmesian pastiches. And I've posted many of the unpopular-opinion Sherlock secrets.

A combination of a fun, tight-knit anon meme (the GC) and a great jumpstarter for reminding me or getting me to talk about fandoms that I'm not active in at the moment (the secrets). I don't have the time to be deeply involved in multiple fandom communities, and it's weird to pop in and out of fandoms just to discuss some little thing you thought of, and "out of sight, out of mind" often sets in in these cases. But when a secret pops up and reminds me of some opinions I have about some fandom that I'm familiar with but not active in, it's great to be able to have a fun conversation about it for one night :)

To be honest, it's mostly a place where I pimp the things I like that have tiny fandoms, in the hopes I can at least draw a couple more people to them.

This is my only outlet for fandom discussion these days. I read and write fic but this is my place for talking about everything.

I used to make secrets but am pretty much too lazy these days.

I DON'T LEAVE ANY COMMENTS ANYMORE BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE TIME! :( Usually something sarcastic or "I agree" type stuff.

I submit cracky sex secrets that are my legit fantasies (you guys love 'em most of the time) and legit mildly controversial options. I think I've only made one or two secrets where I revealed some really shitty thought I had like it was an actually opinion (so, trolling, basically).

I leave comments on secrets I know the source/fandom for. I leave comments on general secrets or FS secrets (usually).

Obligatory, Hello, my name is Bibliophile!Anon and I post a lot of book secrets.

I...am not sure really what I get out of being here. I go through periods where I question whether or not I should be on here (I shouldn't be, right now, for instance...but it's complicated). I know that I tend to (oddly enough) get a lot out of the religious discussions that come up not-infrequently, whether I participate in them or not. (I have started a couple, and I usually do participate.) I enjoy the funny threads, like the St. Patrick's Day troll one last Monday....I get a lot out of being anonymous, tbph, because I was burned really badly on another forum (a Christian one..maybe I should say "Christian" as they really did not demonstrate any of the qualities listed in Gal. 5:22) by cyberbullying (before that word even became a thing) some years back (about five years ago now...wow...) and I'm an adult, so I can't imagine what teenagers who put up with it have to go through.

TL;DR FS is the last bastion of civilized anonymity on the Internet IMO.

I don't post secrets here anymore, after admitting to something that I really wasn't proud of, and then getting bashed and told that I deserved to die in the comments because everyone focused on a different part of the scene I was referencing in the fandom. :P

As for comments, I tend to do a lot of "Me too!" when I see something I relate to, but I'm not in any of the popular fandoms of the moment so generally have no opinions on the majority of the secrets. If someone speaks up and says something interesting about one of my old-school fandoms though, I will comment just because I'm happy to see someone else thinking about it. ;)

I tend to say what I think, but within reason - I try not to be an asshole unless I'm really pissed, and if it's a topic that's sensitive and I don't know much about it, I avoid talking about it, or use a big disclaimer, or ask questions instead of making assertions.

I love this community, I think it's fun and a nice augmentation for my (currently somewhat lackluster) social life and can lead to interesting conversations. I love talking about stuff that interests me and I like the long conversations about other topics, politics, SJ, lifestyles, etc. even the really controversial shit (usually). I find mild or long wank entertaining, but not over the top ("[user name] is a terrible scumbag", "go kill yourself" etc.) shit.

A lot of the time, I don't have a comment for even a single secret, I just hang out in GC. I'm just not terribly active in fandom outside of F!S anymore. I try not to get into long arguments because I generally dislike drama, but sometimes I think that by doing this it makes the rest of F!S think I'm boring. *shrugs*

DW F!S is much more relaxed and friendly than LJ F!S was though. LJ F!S was a lot harsher and more disorganized. I like chatting music and tv and just life stuff with the regular crowd here.

Often I'm not familiar with the fandoms the secrets talk about so I end up playing around in GC. I've trolled a fair bit (both by posting secrets and commenting anon) but I don't ever get too mean. I've posted one secret looking for sympathy and I got it so that was pretty nice. I don't think this community is particularly mean-spirited.

F!S is a good place to see what's going on in various fandoms. I watch/play/read various things at once, but I usually only get super invested in one fandom at a time. F!S is great because I can (sometimes) find people to talk about my interests with without lots of searching. It's very convenient.

So yea, mostly I'm here for the conversation, and the people. If (most) the people here (anon and otherwise) weren't so cool I wouldn't bother, but since they are... I want to be around them.

As for my comments: quantity over quality. :D

(And I do post secrets, but it isn't often and it's usually 'because I want to have a conversation about this thing', so why not make a secret about it, bolster the secret number a tiny bit?)

Re: Inspired by #6 - What is F!S to you?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a fun, laidback community to talk about nerdy stuff with. It's not full of complete idiocy, it's not too caustic or cruel, it's not full of drama in a serious way, it moves at a comfortable pace, and there's conversations about things that I like talking about. It's good. I spend most of my time in GC - there's usually only a couple secrets that I find interesting enough to talk about. But it's just a nice place to talk about stuff.

I should really get named, judging by the amount of time I spend here.

For me f!s is for fandom discussions that I otherwise don't get anywhere else(I just reblog stuff on tumblr and barely post my opinion there, and lj is a bit quiet these days. I also find the people here much easier to chat to, I think I would be far too scared to start chatting in a random lj or dw comm).
