That's precisely why I dropped it.

Of course it's the canon -- it's the original stories, as written by the real author. It doesn't matter whether or not you find it to be "dumb"; it is the original and canonical Sherlock Holmes.

At least you have a conscience about having all that extra money. Some people in your situation would be all "fuck you, I got mine, you're just too lazy/dumb/etc" (i.e. standard poor bashing) when hearing about how badly off some people have it.

Hopefully you're in a position to help someone who genuinely needs it, even if you have to slip cash in their pccket or something.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
...um, do you understand what the word "canon" means?

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-03-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I've never seen that, I would've gone apeshit on them (well, no, I wouldn't have -- but I would have silently fumed and grumbled to myself!).

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Men can't be victims of sexism, shitlord. They're perpetrators of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's why I haven't started reading it. Honestly, it already looks like it's reached the ran-out-of-ideas point.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw! Baby troll's first secret.

Now go back under your bridge, sweetums.

Yep.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike characters that remind me of myself when I was younger. I disliked them when I was younger, too.

But I've grown and I like myself (and, incidentally) characters that are like me, a lot more, now.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay -- I assure you I'm not saying this out of bias, because I totally understand how people might not like the stories, but this secret? The way it's phrased? This is definitely a troll secret.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It's already ran out of ideas. That ship sailed a while ago.

For me it depends on which parts of myself I see in the character I'm identifying with. Identifying with them isn't a requirement for liking a character but it is one category of characters I like, except the ones that seem to be nothing but all my worst traits thrown together in a way that makes me cringe.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
If you really loved the book, I can see why you'd dislike the movie. They were different in a lot of ways.

I was meh about the book, and I loved the movie.

Rational, conciliatory reply conclusion: It's a matter of taste, OP.
Not-so-conciliatory conclusion: I'd sympathize more with you if you weren't being so hostile and dismissive of everyone who disagrees with you. Get over yourself.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel guilty for a gift you received. It doesn't sound like you're a dick about it. I really wish someone would drop about 6 grand in my lap, enough to get me the rest of the way through school, but I don't begrudge people that do have the money to pay their way. Unless they're big assholes.

It is a pretty nice cartoon butt.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You are assuming that the same people saying it's not okay to like a female character because of her looks are saying it's okay to like a male character because of his looks. I'm not saying you're necessarily wrong -- there are probably some people who feel that only retaliatory objectification is acceptable -- but I think there may not be as much overlap as you assume.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I like how you're mad people compare it to the bible. Because that's a piece of literature without flaw.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I'm just wrong then. I liked the book, but I found it a bit choppy and piecemeal in places. The movie did a great job in taking the gist of the story, fleshing out the characters and even it more of a "quest" feel.

There were little bits and pieces of the book that I missed (such as the whole "two Mondays" prophecy), but for me it's the film all the way.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Technically not quite what fandom seems to think it means, but yeah, I wondered the same thing.

(I accidentally used the word "canon" in a paper once. My 90 year old professor was so confused, because in context of literature it made no sense...)

Uh sorry. My bullshit meter's going off at 100% certainty. This is not your real opinion. Not that it's impossible for someone to hate Sherlock Holmes, but this particular secret definitely isn't genuine. Sorry man. Better luck next time?

/also HDU only Sherlock Holmes fans are allowed to mock the milk drinking snake. It's not funny without affection!
