Men can't be victims of sexism, shitlord. They're perpetrators of it.

Men can't be victims of institutionalized sexism, because there is no such thing as institutionalized misandry.

They can, however, be victims of sexism on an individual level.

Now go back to tumblr.

Men can be "victims" (I don't think that word usually applies) of individual sexism. "Recipients" would be a better word. They are not victims of institutionalized sexism.

The latter is, of course, a far bigger problem, and people who go out of their way to say "women are sexist too!!!11!!*" especially in discussions about women or feminism make me roll my eyes, but there is a distinction.

*referring to sexism against men, not internalized misogyny, obivously

Go back to tumblr, trollchild. Or rather, don't; you and your kind should clear out of my Shakespeare fandom forever and I'd be a much happier boy.

You are assuming that the same people saying it's not okay to like a female character because of her looks are saying it's okay to like a male character because of his looks. I'm not saying you're necessarily wrong -- there are probably some people who feel that only retaliatory objectification is acceptable -- but I think there may not be as much overlap as you assume.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there is way more overlap than you assume. I'd say at least half of the people in fandom (more or less in certain fandoms) are exactly like that.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you, OP. Unfortunately, fandom equalists are as rare as hen's teeth. Heaven forefend either male or female characters be treated as 3D people and not 2D caricatures.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
fanfic =/= what is commonly represented in TV, movies and every other form of media

women writing down their harmless fantasies about men they find attractive is not even close to the objectification of women in media

srsly cry more about the poor dudes in fanfic will you

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh please stop being such a pretentious wad. Most of us like reading stories with fully-formed characters of all genders, and yes that extends to fanfic.

i think you've got it backwards

how is the fact that male characters are deemed fine even when their attractiveness is the only thing they have going for them while female characters have to be interesting and strong and whatever for fans to acknowledge their existence sexism against men?

what repercussions do men as a group face in light of "sexism" against them? at worst, some of them are told they need to watch their body language & behaviours so as to not spook someone who inherently sees them as a threat. that's... it. and even then, most men don't heed that at all.

don't say it goes both ways. the implications of misogyny and the implications of "misandry" are entirely different. they have a different effect on both of these groups.

when men are objectified, it might hurt their feelings. when women are, they aren't seen as people, but assets/liabilities depending on their relationship with men. they're additions to men, they exist to serve and please.

it's not the same. it just isn't. i'm not saying it's right (i don't think it is personally), but don't say it goes both ways. it is not the same, at all.

I also notice that male characters that are flat characters in canon get more love than a better developed female characters.

I'll be more concerned over this supposed "reverse sexism" when it starts happening consistently in the canon material and not in, y'know, masturbation fodder.

Re your first point: I think it needs to be taken into account that a lot of the worst flattening of characters comes from teenagers who lack skill/practice/maturity and have trouble producing fic with three-dimensional characterization. (Obviously this isn't true of all teenagers, but that's where the bulk of the terrible fic and cringe-worthy reductive 'headcanons' seem to be coming from.) I mean, I hate it when I see it and I really hate how Tumblr forms echo chambers full of self-reinforcing stupidity with limited exposure to any models for improvement, but I think a lot of the flattening and objectification boils down to "producing is harder than recognizing/appreciating." Fandom latches onto complex characters even when large portions of it aren't great at reproducing that complexity in their own work.
