I seriously thought, "Holy shit, is that Andrew W.K.?" upon looking at the left picture.

...I kind of wish I hadn't looked it up. :( (he is not Andrew W.K.)

it's like those people who say that no one knows suffering until they've been ~atheist~

Re: Spoilers abound for both the show and the book series.

Yeah, I always have a niggling feeling this is just the other side of the coin of straight-up racism.

That actually works. :3

(And that's totally okay! I wasn't expecting too much seeing as I don't comment a lot.)

Thank you! This is amazing, and perfect for tonight :)

I'm not totally opposed to either pairing, though I can't say I've read much of either, so I'd love to see your favorites!

Yeah. Makes me kind of sad, though. :(

I stared for a good five minutes before realizing he's the guy that plays King Louis in the BBC's Musketeers. I'll have to look out for him next time I watch the Hobbit.

Troy and Abed, Community:

Image trying out Christmas

Image right before Abed sacrifices himself so Troy can survive a "zombie" horde

stumbled across this while looking for Troy/Abed, so no idea if it's an outtake or not, but Geordi/Data, Star Trek TNG:

You are correct, and I see in retrospect that I failed to convey that. I think, however, my point stands.

Re: Breaking up help :(

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, anon. Breaking up is never easy, so there's no way to make it 100% not-crappy. A lot depends on the reason why you're breaking up. I'd wait till after the event, but whether or not it's that night or the next day is up to you. As for the rest:

* Keep it short, concise, and compassionate. Remember, you can't take away all the hurt feelings, so please don't try. Keep apologies to a minimum. Don't say "I hope we can still be friends" unless you actually want to be friends, and even then keep in mind that this probably won't work. It rarely does.

* You're going to want to take on a huge burden of guilt and say the sorts of things that make you and your soon-to-be-ex better. Keep that to a minimum, too. It doesn't really fix things and it only prolongs the pain. I'm not saying to be brutal about it, but don't heap on the sympathy too much because it's going to come off as a tad insincere. You're sorry, but not so sorry that you aren't breaking up. Keep it short and sweet.

* He's going to want to know why. You are not obligated to tell him. It's better if you refrain from giving (or being cajoled or browbeaten into giving) a long, detailed explanation as to why you're breaking up. This can turn ugly fast, so avoid it. I'm sorry, but this isn't working for me" and repeat ad nauseum. Do not respond to requests for how he can fix things, just move it along. "I wish you the best." (Assuming he's not an asshole and you do actually wish him well, that is.)

* If you don't want him to contact you after the break-up (either forever or for a set amount of time), be upfront about this. "I'm going to need to work through this on my own." The tone of voice to aim for here is sad, but firm.

Don't be scared. I get the impression you're fairly young. High school or college? Relationships at this age don't last forever and they're absolutely survivable. For both of you.

Re: Questions there's never a good time to ask.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, this. They know selected passages here and there because that's how church sermons and Bible studies work, but that's also how people manage to avoid all the weird and downright fucked up shit that's in the Bible.

Re: Questions there's never a good time to ask.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
That might be true of history books, but the Bible isn't just about reporting historical events, it's a book that purports to contain laws and guidelines for how people should live their lives. If there are cases of rape in the Bible committed by so-called heroic Biblical figures or rape that goes unpunished by men OR God... well, that's an implicit statement about rape and the attitudes one should have about it.

I love it as well. And when checking my bookmarks to rec it, I realized it has a sequel. I know what I will be reading.

"I think a lot of people who call themselves Christians don't specifically believe in Christianity. Rather, they believe in the existence of a powerful being that wants them to be happy, and they believe in certain moral principles that are associated with Christianity. The term "Christian" is just the most convenient one for them to don, since the people they live around call themselves Christians as well."

QFT.

Re: why do more women than men believe in "woo"

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think the answer is it's more socially acceptable for women to admit to believing in it, so you're more likely to hear about them believing it.

Re: Weird romantic question

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what you mean by arbitrary. To me, an arbitrary choice would be pursuing a relationship with a random person for no reason at all. You have reason: you're attracted to your friend, and you think she might be attracted to you. That sounds like a perfectly logical reason to pursue a relationship.

But it's up to you, OP. Do you think that if things change unexpectedly, you'd regret not giving it a chance? What are the best case and worst case scenarios if it worked out or didn't work out? Could you guys still be friends if it didn't?

Re: why do more women than men believe in "woo"

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you assume they do? Check out all those ghost/Bigfoot/imaginary monster reality shows, websites and books, they're predominantly male.

As for your question... you know, the very fact that you ask it in this way makes you sound like a misogynistic asshole. (Hurr hurr all those ladieez and their irrational, emotional thoughts!) Maybe you're not, but if that's the case it's a smart idea to have a good long think about why you come off that way.

I feel this way too. It's really hard for me to suspend my disbelief while I watch it, and it just gets crazier and crazier.

That said, I've learned to love it for its stupidity. I half wonder if it's actually a black comedy.

This is all pretty much true where I live too (Colorado) and the rest of SW USA. Our fire-fighters get right on top of things, and we're generally all aware of the current fire danger level and restrictions and that you have to be more careful living in a forest. But there's a lot of land that hasn't been well maintained, and a lot of it is difficult to get to, and unfortunately that's where a lot of fires start and go out of control.

It's also difficult to do controlled burns in areas where a lot of people live. We generally have to maintain those areas ourselves, and that takes a lot of time and resources. Still, fires are usually rare enough in any one place that it's worth the risk.
