Re: Questions there's never a good time to ask.

I think of agnostic as more of a modifier than a separate category. An agnostic atheist doesn't really believe in religion, but also thinks it isn't completely out of the question since we can never really know. Similarly, an agnostic Christian believes in God and all that, but also thinks it isn't completely out of the question that their beliefs might be wrong. Or something like that.

Huh. That still seems confusing to me. But thank you for explaining!

Interesting Secret Thread?

Not so engaging secrets today, eh?

Funny? Wanky? Not Fandom? Totally Fabricated? I don't care. Post something interesting here. Spoiler and Trigger warnings in the subject line, if you please.

I don't know what the fuck my gender identity is.

Re: Early gayness on American movies and TV

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The Boys in the Band was I think the first movie to be about gay characters and what living as a gay guy is like. It came out in 1970. However, it's pretty hated nowadays, because most of the characters are miserable, bitter, losers, mentally troubled, alcoholic, sleazy, etc.

Breaking up help :(

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I need some advice, hope people here can help me.

I've never broken up with anyone because this is my first relationship ever. It's also lasted for 4 years, so it's no small deal to break up.

I'll see my boyfriend tomorrow and there's a big finale in our pen and paper group so it would be kind of shitty to do it before because it wouldn ruin everyone's day... on the other hand wouldn't it be even shittier to wait until the end of the day? Or should I wait for a better day?

I'm not sure what to do. I'm just really afraid of what will happen because I've never had to hurt anyone like that... Like if anyone has tips on what I should keep in mind I would appreciate that too.

Canon or fanon?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I read so much fanfic that I can't remember if something is canon or not. I'm not the only one, am I? Please tell me I'm not.

So here's a thread for people like me to ask FS about those things in our fandoms that we're not sure if they happened in canon or if it's more a fandom hivemind deal. It's probably best to change the subject line to the fandom name, even if it means having multiple threads with the same title.

Echoing everyone here, I feel your pain. I'm not blind without my glasses but so near-sighted that it poses a major problem. What really scares me about being without my glasses is that it's like my field of awareness gets shrunken down to the inches directly around me. I start bumping into walls and people like a cartoon character, because I can't concentrate on what's coming. Similarly, I'm way more likely to get hit in the head by a ball because I won't notice it coming.

I'm the first person in my family to have eye problems from youth, but my parents are getting older and needing reading glasses. And when they say thing like, "I have no idea where I put my glasses" or "oh of course I can't read this, I'm not wearing glasses!" a part of me thinks HOW DO YOU LIVE?!

Ugh, not to mention that they let thumbprints and water spots on their glasses all the time. It took me several years to train the people around me to know that if it rains, I either have to have my head down or my glasses off, so no, I can't concentrate on what you're saying because I'm just trying to get to the nearest dry area without hurting myself.

I think it has to do with instinctive behavioral patterns. Like, we need to hate incest so that the species won't experience a major decline. Nothing rational, just instincts.

But I personally do not consider incestuous relationships between siblings amoral. As long as there is consent, I'm as fine with it as I'd be with any other type of consensual relationship.

ok, I read links above and wowww

lmao

I probably would have gotten banned because I don't think Beverly was fridged.

Fridging to me specifically means killing a female character solely for a male character's pain or character development. But uh... Bev's death was really about moving the main plot forward. It was something that needed to happen to get Jack suspicious of Hannibal.

And like... they also needed to kill a character to keep the stakes of the show high and Beverly is the obvious choice. Will and Hannibal (and Jack right now) have main character immunity. So once you remove them, you are left with the science bros who no one cares about and thus their deaths wouldn't be impactful on either the viewers or the characters OR you're left with the various female characters that make up the supporting cast. And really, Bev was the obvious choice. It makes sense for her to investigate Hannibal. Freddie could have been killed but then she's an antagonist that I think they'd like to keep around for a while. Alana could have been killed, but as a character she has more to offer the writers due to her past with both Will and Hannibal. It could have been Bella, but she's dying anyway. Or maybe Bedelia, but no one in the cast aside from Hannibal knows who she is so her death wouldn't have affected them as much.

2) - Places do take some countermeasures, and there are controlled burns and things like that, and as other people have said, fire is hard to deal with.

But I think in a lot of the more built up areas, the pressure to develop new land and build more houses to sell and the growth of developments - the pressure for all of that is such that people just kind of build without really giving a shit about planning for fires. So people could do that, but the profit motive and the population pressure and the demand for housing all lead to people building stuff in the moment and then getting screwed when there's a fire.

I almost always end up thinking that the people who ship my ships are idiots. The more heavily invested I am in the ship, the more shippers I'll find are idiotic.

I hope that's interesting enough.

The name seems to be Alfred just spelt a bit differently, slightly odd but not unheard of*...

*At least not in my part of the woods... Tho probably more likely to be a female name.

I totally hear you here, as a Christian myself... it drives me nuts when people don't acknowledge that the roots are in the Jewish faith and the Jewish law, and just pretend those don't exist - or pick and choose which parts apply to them and which don't, which is even stupider.

The way it seems to me (and I am not a theologian, just someone who has read the entirety of the Bible multiple times and gone to church most of my life, both a conservative church when I was young and a liberal church currently) is that one of the reasons for Jesus to come and shake things up was because there was too much focus on "the letter of the law" as opposed to "the spirit of the law". The Pharisees and such were going around making up severe restrictions as expansion or misinterpretation of basic laws laid down in the days of Moses, which no longer really applied so much because society had changed. (For example, the "no boiling a calf in its mother's milk" or whatever the exact quote is - that referred to a specific ritual from another religion. That somehow turned into not eating milk and meat during the same meal, even though the meal was not a ritual sacrifice in any way...)

In short, people were interpreting religious law in such a way that it was IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to actually live a lawful life. And Jesus came along and basically said "Okay, I get that you're trying to be good people and make sure that everyone else is good people too, but you're going too far. Look at things like intent. Don't be a hypocrite. And by the way, even though my Father has called the Jews to be his special people, he loves ALL of his creation, not just them, and wants them all to know him."

So as he said himself at one point, he wasn't there to get rid of the old law. He was there to try to explain that they didn't need to be so strict about interpretation, and that it was supposed to be inclusive, not exclusive.

So while Christianity sort of supercedes Jewish law, at least for those Christians who are not also Jewish (and there are some), Christians who ignore the Old Testament are missing out on an awful lot of relevant lessons. The exact laws may not apply so much, but the general principles and ideas and morals to be found there put a lot of things about Christianity into perspective.

tl;dr: Christians SHOULD acknowledge the Old Testament and that Jesus was Jewish, you're absolutely right. But Christianity is not simply an addition to Judaism, rather a different interpretation and approach to the same basic end.

I wish my parents would hit me, just once. Then maybe I could hate them. Emotional abuse is so nebulous. But I know I should never wish for worse than I have just to feel vindicated.
