I was in a group like that, and we had someone very much like you're describing. Except it was definitely not entertaining. They were so all-pervasive with their narcissism and disrespect for others that the group couldn't function and fell apart. Sad day.

The same thing happened to me with the "final boss" character from AA Investigations. I wasn't spoiled for it, and I liked the character even before the reveal, but after it I found them fascinating, despite that I usually hate evil characters who pretend to be nice.

They really missed the boat on merchandizing with that movie. They had action figures as part of the plot. How could they not make actual toys of that?

That you don't notice it sooner suggests that their narrative isn't very linear (or doesn't have the traditional "setup-elaboration-punchline").

If you're enjoying the strips, then I suppose it doesn't much matter.

even the most miserable git would probably look at their relationship and see that they seem genuinely happy with each other despite their glaring flaws

like they're the antithesis of the obnoxious bickering couple that are presented as normal

For me, I think, it's the fact that the traits I like about the Harry Potter novels are totally unrelated to the traits that I like about detective novels or... tragicomic novels set in Britain, if that's what we're going for in terms of genre. Just totally distinct kinds of literature.
