I fundamentally believe that Japanese people do not get to decide whether it's racist. It is racist or it isn't.

It's stupid to just ignore something like that when you're trying to determine whether something is racist, and I think this specific incident is a lot closer to tasteless than to racist. But I don't think something gets a free pass because one group or another thinks it's okay. It's not the final word. It's a matter of fact, not of perception, whether something is racist.

you and literally everyone else jesus christ this has been done to death, give us something new with this common as fuck complaint

Also, I hate the idea of "acting like men" because I disagree with the idea that there is such a thing. Women can have every sort of trait imaginable and they are still women.

+1 to this.

You do realize it's relevant that Nth generation Asian-Americans are often wrongly seen and treated by other Americans (usually white) as completely Asian and not American, right?

i could have written this secret. it's very awkward watching tv with my parents because they're the type to get emotional about shows (and not always the best shows). they're tearing up and i'm like 'yeah, that was pretty sad". thankfully, i don't care for most of the shows they watch. i mean, who cries at ncis?

Who gets to decide, white liberals?

Political Animals

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotta unload. I've read on some random post on tumblr how this show is crappy and Kings is, instead, at least a lot more enjoyable.

Yes, we are talking about shows Sebastian Stan has been in, but this is irrelevant now.

Kings > Political Animals? Really?

My position on this: I've watched Political Animals when it aired, to this day I still think it's one of the best shows out there in terms of character writing, acting and especially in terms of amazing roles for women. I would say it's one of the FEW shows out there that has women in major roles, a story that revolves around women and with extremely good actresses on top of that.

Then I discover it's not even considered enjoyable... and I admit this upset me on a personal level.

Thoughts? Anyone seen it and wants to tell me what I'm doing wrong, or right, or whatever? I can't believe this show has been forgotten so easily... I was hoping it would inspire other shows to do the same.

I thought I'd mention I don't consider myself a social justice warrior at all, so I don't mean to stir up unnecessary drama.

Resting Bitch Face strikes again. It's not just you.

Wait. So Japanese people are not able to decide if something is racist TOWARDS them? Wow. Thank God the blessed Americans are there to lead them in this darkness.

I seem to have trained myself to look happy after getting tired of people asking me what's wrong because apparently my neutral face also looked sad.

Most of the reactions I've seen from people with some actual stakes in this whole thing point out the reactions you mentioned, but it doesn't seem like it's a total non-issue:

They do also go back to the Harujuku Girls thing, since I've seen that referenced:

i find that funny, because when i ask myself "what would wallander do?" the answer is either "get drunk", "brood", or "get drunk and brood".

Re: How does your garden grow, FS?

[personal profile] loracarol 2014-04-29 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I had a garden, but right now I have a tiny little fenced off "patio" (4' by 6' if that), with a tall-ass fence and small children and small deer to worry about if I plant outside that fence. D:

If anyone knows anything that deer don't like/is "safe" for children, and can be planted on a East-facing wall/in containers in shade, I would love to hear it!

As for you, OP, try some tiger lilies? They definitely add a pop of color, and if you treat them right, they'll show up again and again!

Also, if you're looking for nice smelling things, this site let's you do an advanced search where you can filter out roses by their smell/color, if you like roses?

But part of that is that only one of these men has a (shown) male relative (and they look alike as well). I mean, it makes sense that Anna and Elsa have similar features as you know, they are sisters and that they resemble their mother, like kids often do. Especially as you can see some resemblance with their father as well (though mostly Anna's hair colour in this case) Same with Rapunzel and her biological parents. (And perhaps there is something to the Tumblr theories that Anna and Elsa's mum is related to Rapunzel's dad?) Gothel doesn't really look that much like the other women.

I'm sure this would be the case if we saw more male relatives, like Hans' brothers.

That being said, they do look fairly alike, and it would be nice to see more variety, but it's not fair to compare 6 unrelated men to 6 women where there's only one who isn't related to anyone.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
See, but Asian-Americans are not the audience. At all. Asian-Americans are Americans. If they went to Japan, they would be considered Americans. And again, this video was not for Americans. At all. It was for her Japanese audience and they loved it (or ignored it).

thisisnotjapan is a horrible asshole who should not be allowed on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Every human being using their own individual judgment has to try and decide as best they can for themselves. There is no authority who says such-and-such a thing is racist, and such-and-such a thing is not racist. It's like deciding what's right and wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Every time I see people say things like that, I have to wonder what games they've been playing. I've never had trouble finding JRPGs with interesting and dynamic female characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate the "bobble head, bug eyed" design in general. But I still prefer the older kind of animation, so...

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think all the faces are a bit samey. I think they just smooth the faces out so much to make them appealing to young children that they lose a anything distinct.

That is exactly what I got from it.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
And I see it, the Frozen characters don't seem to have as differentiation as the Tangled characters (and I'm pretty sure at least one is there to make the point that related characters can have some similarities and still look somewhat different).

I agree that the childlike faces for the all female characters does get kind of old.
A bit off topic, but the face designs for the characters in Tangled (both male and female) just bothers me to no end. They all look so annoying, idk
