You'll note the male main characters who are supposed to be attractive all look relatively similar, compared to the ones who aren't. So the real question is -- why didn't female villains/background characters have weird caricatured faces?

"Don't you know? Female characters ALWAYS have to be pretty.
Always.
No expections.
None.
Nada.
Niente.
Male characters? They can have big noses, large chins, small eyes, and even have diverse body types. But a female character not looking conventually attractive and/or having unquie features?
OH GOD SOMEONE CALL 911 ABORT ABORT WE DIDN'T PLAN FOR THIS"

-seems to be the mindset of most character designers at Disney and Pixar.
I mean I love you guys and all, but coooome on.

The three women on the bottom are related. So are the two on the top. The villain has a distinctive face from the other five.

As far as I know, none of the men are related.

Now, I don't know about you but my siblings and mother all have very similar faces (and bodies). We do share some traits with our father, but our similarities to our mother are more obvious.

Part of the same-faceness can be explained by the fact that several of the women in the picture are related to each other. Genetics and all that jazz.

Also, how does Mother Gothel look like any other female?

I think everyone is starting to forget that this is a community where secrets are posted. Granted, some of them really aren't secrets and lean more towards being thread starters than anything... but some of them are secrets.

There's nothing wrong with this, OP. I agree, and I'm also tired of this six year old girl aesthetic if the characters aren't six year old girls lol

Am the only one who thinks all of the male characters in 'Frozen' look pretty alike, and that the female characters in 'Tangled' don't, and who wound up taking this secret to mean "the characters in 'Tangled' are more varied than the characters in 'Frozen?'"

Looks like all the female character faces (except the upper left) are the same barbie head just with different hair colors/styles and minimally different eyes.

At least it won't be difficult for the company to mass produce toys of them since they all use the same head.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
But part of that is that only one of these men has a (shown) male relative (and they look alike as well). I mean, it makes sense that Anna and Elsa have similar features as you know, they are sisters and that they resemble their mother, like kids often do. Especially as you can see some resemblance with their father as well (though mostly Anna's hair colour in this case) Same with Rapunzel and her biological parents. (And perhaps there is something to the Tumblr theories that Anna and Elsa's mum is related to Rapunzel's dad?) Gothel doesn't really look that much like the other women.

I'm sure this would be the case if we saw more male relatives, like Hans' brothers.

That being said, they do look fairly alike, and it would be nice to see more variety, but it's not fair to compare 6 unrelated men to 6 women where there's only one who isn't related to anyone.

I hate the "bobble head, bug eyed" design in general. But I still prefer the older kind of animation, so...

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think all the faces are a bit samey. I think they just smooth the faces out so much to make them appealing to young children that they lose a anything distinct.

I agree that the childlike faces for the all female characters does get kind of old.
A bit off topic, but the face designs for the characters in Tangled (both male and female) just bothers me to no end. They all look so annoying, idk

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not just Disney animators who make everyone look similar, though -- TV programme makers cast similar looking people. I often find it quite hard to recognise different characters, because they're all slim, handsome/pretty, with regular features and great hair...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the good ladies supposed to look like that (big doe eyes, small noses, etc) because Glen Keane(?) was the one drawing it?

Not that I don't agree with you. We really do need more variety for female characters instead of the same face syndrome we always get.
Edited 2014-04-30 00:04 (UTC)

I can see where you're coming from. I think the comments above bring up a good point about the females being related while the males are not. Also, you're comparing two Disney princess movies to each other. If Disney princess movies don't look similar and follow a formula, they don't do as well. As far as I know, Tangled did much better than other recent princess films so it makes sense for Disney to try and make that same magic happen again. I think if you included the females from other CGI Disney movies such as Franny from Meet the Robinsons, you'd see more variation.
