GUYS, I THINK I KNOW WHICH ONE IS TODAY'S WANK SECRET

(Anonymous) 2014-05-01 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn it, I'm not sure whether to make popcorn or not; on the one hand, it seems a little too much like wank bait to be serious, but on the other hand knowing what has devolved into wank on here, I'm really not sure.

Wasn't mostc people's problem with this about the terrible portrayal of BDSM and how the raps of the main character just glossed over?

Non-consensual sex isn't exactly what I'd call "empowering," but anyway.

If you want to read it because it's "kinky," go ahead, but don't be surprised that people feel it doesn't portray a healthy BDSM relationship.

I don't think "shaming" is the right word here.

The beginning: http://pervocracy.blogspot.com/2013/09/lets-read-fifty-shades-of-grey-chapter-1.html

The money shot: http://pervocracy.blogspot.com/2014/01/lets-read-fifty-shades-of-grey-chapter.html

The beginning of this is worth reading as well: http://pervocracy.blogspot.com/2014/02/lets-read-fifty-shades-of-grey-chapter.html

(Also, shouldn't this secret have gotten a rape trigger warning? The link I just posted DEFINITELY needs it.)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-01 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol people don't shame fans of fifty shades because they may or may not have some rape fantasies. The reason why most people hate it (at least I hope so) is because is protrays BDSM horribly and actually involves rape and other sexist tropes which just gets shoved under the rug.
Anna gets used, insulted, and raped by Christan multiple times throughout the book and E.L. James kinda just shrugs her shoulders and doesn't give a crap, pushing it all under the BDSM banner because she's too lazy to do any reaserch.
Fifty shades gets shit on because it makes BDSM, women, and men look bad.

Also, the sex scenes just suck. They're kinda gross, unintentionally hilraious, and awkward. Like, I wouldn't be surprised if this was her first time writing sex scenes. Because it shows, lemme tell you.

To actually answer your point, OP, from what I've seen, the prevailing feminist view is that you can like whatever you want in the bedroom (or sex dungeon, car backseat, what have you) so long as it's between consenting adults.

But, you know, I missed the last meeting, so they could have repealed this stance - I think I remember seeing it on the agenda, right after "should we change the 'like a fish needs a bicycle' saying to a different simile," "Thoughts on Yaoi," and "Butter Cookies: How much vanilla is too much?"

Rape fantasy =/= writing scenes that make actual rape appear okay.

Also there are tons of other reasons people hate the books, including feminists, and many of them have already been mentioned. It's just a shit book.

I agree that women shouldn't be shamed for having rape fantasies. But 50 Shades is still a badly written book.

[personal profile] ariakas 2014-05-02 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
WEll, now we know you've never actually read any feminist critique of the book. Thanks for your time. Carry on.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't look down on rape fantasies, just bad writing and the people who don't have enough taste not to know it when they're reading it.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
What seems to piss most people off about Shades is that it's badly written rape fantasy. Like, you can't even fap to the awful representation of BDSM because here's this chick going "oh jeez". And this is what the masses have latched on to for unfathomable reasons.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
You know what, I was thinking about this, and to some extent I think you're right. Books like 50 Shades and Twilight are written by women, for women, and might be silly, somewhat disturbing fantasies but they are (hopefully) just fantasies. I feel like a lot of the criticism is against the female authors for writing something that's not inherently bad (morally, that is, maybe not quality-wise). But because they are women, they are attacked both by sexist people (or treated as sole representatives of female writers and speakers for what women fantasize about) and by some feminists for writing stuff that'd be problematic in a real relationship. But fantasies don't have to represent reality, and they shouldn't be treated as indicators of that by either crowd.

The problem isn't that it's a rape fantasy--the problem it's that it's a rape fantasy that the author refuses to acknowledge is a rape fantasy. The book has NOT been marketed with the idea that It's Only Fantasy, Do Not Try This At Home. It's been marketed with the idea that this is the ideal relationship that every woman secretly wants in real life. Do I even need to explain why this is an awful idea?

I can't speak for 50 Shades because I haven't read it, but I really, really dislike the "person ignores their lover's protests because they know they really want it" trope. Not because I dislike rape fantasies - that's actually one of my kinks. It's because so often the writing (or art etc in comics) doesn't make it clear that the person *actually wants it.* It always makes me rage at the aggressor, "They said no! There's nothing in the text/the art showing that they don't mean no! What the fuck makes you think you know what they want better than they do? Rrrrrrrrrghghghggh."

I'm sorry, this is a massive hot button issue for me. I've had to backbutton out of many a fic and go watch kitten videos to stop myself from leaving unwarranted reviews.

I can't stand that its popularity is used by men to validate their belief that all women want to be raped. I've never had any rape fantasies, yet because I'm a girl, I get lumped in with the rest of the idiots who like this shitty book.

[personal profile] aris_tgd 2014-05-02 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that I don't understand about Fifty Shades isn't about rape fantasy. Rather, I mean, I know what rape fantasy is. Rape fantasy can be hot. But usually in rape fantasy, the person being raped doesn't then spend several paragraphs feeling depressed and nauseated and self-loathing because they've been hurt. I mean, I don't doubt that there are some people who get off on more realistic rape fantasies, and more power to them! I just didn't think that the majority of people with rape fantasies enjoyed thinking about how much actual rape and abuse sucks.

It's like, the rape scenes in 50 Shades don't read as sexy/kinky rape scenes to me, they read like someone really trying to make their audience understand how bad abuse is and how screwed up your thinking gets in an abusive relationship. It's not that I don't think NOBODY SHOULD FIND THAT SEXY HOMG, it's just that I'm baffled at how many people DO find that sexy. Like, is that really the popular sex fantasy of the age? Have I been misreading most of America this whole time? There are loads of people buying these books and "Weep because Christian Grey isn't real" t-shirts and ugly ties and tie-in games, surely not all of them have the kink of being in a (really well detailed!) abusive relationship?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
i dont mind women with the fantasy but guys with the fantasy who are doing the raping is a red flag for me. its a fantasy. maybe not something they actively plan on doing but that they find any satisfaction out of the concept, whether rehearsed or otherwise, is not something im comfortable with.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Try harder, anon. Your lumping together of 'feminists' like they all think the same things is such obvious wankbait.

I'm sorry someone shamed your kink, but this is just silly.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Cersei does care more but what she thinks is love is tainted and vile. She comes from a family that is naturally sociopathic. That's how Joffrey came out so epically fucked up.

Tyrion is a beautiful exception. That's why he's the man and a true (p)imp.
