"love the games hate the fandom" is pretty much me for every game I've ever looked into the fandom of.

Gamers are literally the worst.

I have not found a single enjoyable game fandom.

It's pretty terrible. I thought it'd be fun, but no, it's all arguing about which love interest is the best and how you should really play and gajklfdjak. Whatever.

I'm just forever disappointed that I couldn't romance Sten with my elf-mage, because that shit would have been hilarious.

I can see why. I always loved that Dragon Age was great for representation of female and non-straight characters, and romance options. I also really like the gameplay and the world.

But sadly, because it's actually BETTER than most games at representation, it draws a lot of people who go specifically for that, and a subset of those are just going to be going on and on about those issues.

But sometimes I feel like some very standard games with your average silent white male protagonist get LESS criticism than the games that actually try (because the people who want to bitch about it won't play those standard white male protagonist (tm) games to begin with).

Same here. Have tried two.

While it's true that every fandom has its cliques of snobs, in most fandoms those people comprise 10-20%.

In gaming fandom that number is reversed.

Where do you hang out? Just curious. Not the BioWare forums, right? (Do they even still exist? I THINK they do. Haven't been to that place in years but by God, it was a mess.)

The most experience I've had with Dragon Age fans in years has been talking about it with personal friends, commenting about it here on f!s, or reblogging pretty gifs or art on tumblr. Maybe I should count myself lucky.

I'm sorry you ran into the loony side of the fandom, OP. But for what it's worth, I ended up checking DA 2 because of the fandom.

... Well, kind of. Back when I was still active on tumblr a couple of blogs I followed reposted a bunch of DA 2 related things and there was zero drama involved, just good-natured headcanoning, fangirling and actual discussion that didn't turn into screaming matches. I can understand why you wouldn't want to to stay in the fandom, but there's a bright side to the DA fandom, too.* Glad to hear that the fandom hasn't soured the games for you, though!

(* While I didn't see any fandom wanks while I was still on tumblr, I'm not exactly surprised that the DA fandom has issues. Like, I'm pretty sure 99% of fic writers hate Anders. And now I'm really picky when it cames to DA fic on AO3, because every fic I try to read focuses so much on bashing Anders that I just can't.)

Video game fandoms are some of the wankiest I've ever seen. Don't step into the Sims fandom unless you're wearing protective gear.

Funny that you find it this way around. Often I've found myself more often disgusted with game fandoms being too sexist homophobic etc, rather than too anti-sexist/ anti-racist.

Is it just that the DA fandom is especially anti-oppression, or do out do even gaming fandoms tolerance for sexism and homophobia? I'm assuming you're a regular decent person, but for all I know you just go about screaming "WHORES AND FAGGOTS! THE GAME IS FULL OF WHORES AND FAGGOTS?!"

People telling you you're a horrible human being is a separate issue from talk about social issues. I use words like "sexist" and "homophobic" quite a bit but I don't tell people they're horrible. They often like to imagine I did though.

Odds are you are fully justified in complaining about this because there are really obnoxious people out there who share some opinions with me, but I will always have this little nagging doubt when I hear people say this sort of thing because, for people who say that intent matters and everyone needs to stop reading too much into everything, the people who say this love to get offended by what they think I said instead of what I actually said.

I always hear such terrible things about game fandoms. I've taken to avoiding them as a rule, which is a real shame, because I feel like I could have a lot of fun in them otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, this.

You can't even critique certain characters (one of which I will not name, though I'd dislike them the same if they were male) without being called a "slut-shaming misogynist".

And do *not* get me started on Anders. Ghhhh....

I had to cut down sharply on my tracking of the Dragon Age tag on tumblr in part because of this. A chunk of my tumblr blacklist is certain names in the fandom whose posts grind on my last nerve.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-05-17 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was only briefly in the Dragon Age fandom for a short while, and I 'NOPE'd out pretty hard not long after DA2 (which is right up there with 'The 3rd Birthday' in the 'Games that make me turn into a Red Lantern in 0 to 60' category) for a laundry list of reasons.

So I don't blame you at all, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Well of course you're a horrible human being OP, because have you seen your fellow humans in those games, they're mostly huge assholes.

I was a MNF in DA fandom for a long time. It's actually by far my favourite fandom experience so far, but that was way before everyone seemed to have to have a Tumblr, when you could still find good fics on FF.net. Looking around, a lot of my old friends seem to have fallen down the SJW rabbit hole. A shame, really. Though a lot of them always were that aggressive and just plain stand-offish (in particular, wardenblues/whitethornworlf/whoever she is now has always been amazingly prickly, so no change there).

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2014-05-17 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think there are times for conversations like that and times for not. Also, fandom is made of people and people are dumb. Well, and smart but they hide. You get everything and everyone.

Heck, maybe even you're one of the dumb dicks. Who knows?

I get what you mean. I think a lot of ideals of social justice are important and that it's important to think about sexism/racism/homophobia/transphobia/etc. However, I do think it can be almost accusatory, like "How DARE you like this because XYZ." I can't talk to my sister about certain ships I enjoy because she'll get kind of accusatory (because I ship het more than I ship slash, though I do have slash and femslash pairings I like).

i came super late to this fandom and didn't really branch out and try to interact with other fans (how does one even do that on tumblr without having friends who are already established in fandom?) so i haven't encountered much of this. i pretty much only remember the heroes of dragon age fenris debacle but i think there was a lot of legit criticism going on there, even if some people were going overboard. i'm sorry you had a shitty experience, op. :(((

Video game fandoms in general can be pretty shitty, although I've had luck with the two I've been involved in.

I'm not even in the DA fandom and I've seen some pretty vile shit from it.

OP, the [livejournal.com profile] dragon_age community over on LJ is actually pretty good. I haven't seen the sort of stuff you're talking about there. When DA2 was released, there was some discussion of possibly problematic elements, but it was taken in good faith. The Alistair related community, however, is best avoided... and good gods, don't touch the Bioware forums with someone else's fifty foot pole.
