Apparently there was a school shooting today in my state. Luckily only one person (and the shooter) died, but at the same time I'm sorry for that person's family. I'd like to hope that this time we'll actually learn the name of the victim before people turn their death into a political issue, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: School shooting tw

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Thing is, for many of the victims and their families, they don't want their information to be put out. They want to keep their privacy intact. And for the press to hound them and hound them, it feels like they are being violated all over again.

That's why for many of these shootings, you are never given the name of the victims. Because the press goes to their families for permission to give out their names and the families say, "No."

Me too. I made it clear on FB that as horrible as it was, I don't want to hear about gun talk. The point is that someone was murdered. Again. This is happening way too much, and imho it goes beyond just gun control. There's other problems too.

Re: School shooting tw

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
There are obviously other problems. You don't pick up a gun and go on a murder spree unless you have other problems than just owning a gun.

But it is access to a gun that means a problem in someone's mental health can become a murder spree.

I've said this in another comment, but I'll say it again: the first step is gun control. Second to umpteenth steps is addressing the underlying issues. But gun control has to be the first step if you want to stop gun related shootings.

There were two shootings in the city where I live today - one drive-by and one spree. I'm supposed to pass through one of the areas shortly (it's on my way to go to an audition). They caught the spree shooter, but not the drive-by shooter. Even though it was a targeted attack, I'm still terrified.

...you think for some reason the drive by guy will target you?

If they happened to be in the same place as the person they want to kill, sure? It's not irrational to be afraid of that happening.

bystanders get hurt easily in drive-bys.

Chances are anon will be perfectly okay, but it's totally reasonable to be nervous in that situation.

If you really want to try to stop school shootings, they have to be political issues. A thousand rounds of "please don't hurt people" clearly isn't doing it.

Re: School shooting tw

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Spreading misinformation and rumors about the victims before we know anything about them in the name of your political movement is the opposite of helpful. See: "the UCSB shooter killed seven women because of misogyny!"

He killed four men, two women and himself. Nice job erasing the victims for your politics.

Re: School shooting tw

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly we have different ideas on what it means to make a political issue of things. Because what you describe is not at all what I'm talking about.

He only killed three of those men because they were his roommates and he didn't want them interfering with his mass killing plans. Also, the number of female victims would have been WAY higher if the sorority house he went to, planning to kill all the sisters, had let him in instead of keeping the door shut when he arrived. There's also the part where he wrote a huge long manifesto about how women were the root of all evil because they wouldn't have sex with him and if he was going to kill men it was because they were getting to have sex with the women. So yes, hatred of women, i.e. misogyny, WAS his stated reason. You might want to check your facts a little bit. Obviously it's stupid to invent false victim numbers, but even so.

You noticed how no one question the anti Semite intentions of the Synagogue Shooter, even though a few people murdered weren't Jewish? In Mr. MRA's case, it might have something to do with the 130 page manifesto that talked about how he was going to kill a bunch of women for not sleeping with him.

I just can't imagine why women would think that murder has anything to do with misogyny. *fans delicate self*

I wish people would make more of an issue about mental health and a good support than guns. Even if you take the guns you still have an angry ill person.

Re: School shooting tw

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I think there needs to be a serious discussion about re-establishing institutions, because it's becoming clear that there are a lot of people out there who are so sick that they really should not be allowed out in society without treatment.

And I say this as someone with a mental illness myself.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Mental health (and misogyny) are both issues that need to be addressed better in modern Western society to stop these shootings. But the first step isn't to wait for years for various programs aimed at addressing these issues to take affect.

The second to umpteenth steps are addressing the underlying issues, definitely. But the first step is to make sure angry, ill people do not have access to guns, pure and simple.

I'd like to hope that this time we'll actually learn the name of the victim before people turn their death into a political issue, but I'm not holding my breath.

I know this has been said ad nauseum before, but it obviously needs to be said again. As an Australian, I am immensely grateful that within months of the Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania, in which a single gunman killed 35 people and injured 23, the conservative government of the time turned it into a political issue and initiated tighter restrictions on gun ownership and a mass gun buyback scheme. I am grateful because there haven't been any mass shooting incidents in Australia since, and homicides and suicides by gun have dramatically decreased (without an increase in death by other methods).

'Politics' isn't a dirty word if it's just the medium through which society reacts to an atrocity and thus stops further atrocities. Same with 'gun control'.
