The comic does a better job fleshing her (and the other characters) out but that doesn't make her likeable. Neither does it for Scott, and that's the point -- the only ones who aren't a total fuckup in that comic is Kim Pine and Scott's sister Stacy.

(I thought their relationship was the most boring part of the movie anyway. Everyone else was more interesting and the gags were funny.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 12:27 am (UTC)(link)So we've got an impressionable audience of young girls who are just beginning to figure what they want in life and from other people, learning that this abusive, controlling, seriously unhealthy relationship is an ideal they should aspire to. I was in high school when the Twilight-mania hit. A couple of first year girls broke up with their boyfriends because they "needed to be more like Edward Cullen".
So, yeah, I have problems with Twilight specifically because of its intended demographic. Young girls need all the help they can get, especially when it comes to unhealthy relationships, and Twilight did the opposite of help.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 01:51 am (UTC)(link)The point of Bella is that the author was bitter over never getting the hot guys in school and that's why Bella's written description is literally a young, pretty Meyer.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 03:57 am (UTC)(link)Twilight is written from Bella' perspective. She's the main character. Her being boring as a bag of rocks is a big issue. Ramona, however, is the love interest. Being boring is still an issue, but it doesn't break a series, or even a character as much as it would if she were the main character.
Because she's not the main character, she can be an ideal for audience (who are presumed men) to desire. A better parallel with Ramona is actually Edward Cullen.
And then, of course, Ramona is kind of an asshole. Her negative qualities are intentionally there. The problem with the movie is that it just doesn't establish why she's all that desirable, but I think you can still pick up this idea Scott wants her because, to him, she's exotic and interesting.
