it's actually less of a weeaboo thing-- true self-proclaimed "otaku" seem to often find his work hit-or-miss-- it's more a movie-snob thing. Super elitist movie critics and whatnot are the ones who think he can do no wrong.

Well I don't know about worshipping him precisely, but I do like Studio Ghibli films. They are always beautiful - practically works of art. God, the background art alone....

I'm actually not too bothered about them as stories, but I think that's (non-existent) kids in a heartbeat though.

Funny, my 70-year-old decidedly non-weaboo parents love him because he makes good movies. They own all of his movies on DVD and even called me up after they'd gone to see 'The Wind Rises' to tell me that I should go see it because it was so good.

Kiddo, the weeaboos hate this guy (and he hates them) due to lack of sexualized school girls in his works and not enough hyper-violence. He hates them for insisting every cartoon has to be about hyper violent catgirl maids and not actual characters.

He makes movies that have universal appeal. That's why people love him, that's not really hard to understand.

I don't know what he's like as a person, but he certainly would not be the first director with a difficult character. But, that's definitely not going to make me enjoy the movies less.

I don't even care what his personality is. His movies are boring to decent to me (although I really did like Castle in the Sky) and I get sick of all the praise he gets, when there are many more interesting anime and movies in general out there.

He makes good things, but I'm so tired of him being the authority on everything anime when Ghibli primarily works on movies and hasn't had anything to with the late night anime industry or even tv anime in ages. (Though I guess they're doing that CGI thing in the fall.)

Also people need to stop with the whole "next Miyazaki" crap everytime they like an anime director. And it disappoints me that people almost overlook Isao Takahata's contribution's to Ghibli, whose the better director imo.

I thought it was mainly people who don't watch any anime who are his biggest fans, not weabboos. Not that there isn't any overlap, but any time a non-anime watcher talks to me about anime they like it's often Miyazaki films/Cowboy Bebop/Akira.

I get that his movies are good. With his earlier movies being better than his later ones. But I don't get the, "OMG! HE IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN DISNEY!"

No. No. I'm not even all that much of a fan of Disney and I feel like this is wrong. Disney took chances with his animation. First one to do a full length movie. First one to do layers, that is, painting on separate panes to give the animation depth. First one to work with computer animation in the full length movies.

Miyazaki has never even tackled doing a musical. Do you know how hard it is to do a musical?

I see Disney as, "hey, let's develop a program so we can animate every snowflake in 3D and they can look as sharp as real snowflakes." While Miyazaki is like, "No, let's not. The traditional ways work best. We don't need to rock the boat."

Personally, I'd rather see people try something and fail than see the same old, same old.

I like his work generally, but I haaaate Howl's Moving Castle. Just can't stand it.

This would be because I am a book fan. He screwed it up so bad!

And now all the time people go ON and ON about how much they love Howl's Moving Castle, and invariably they are talking about the crappy adaptation and not the lovely lovely book, and most of them will never bother to read the book, and it was SO MUCH BETTER.

The plot actually made sense, Howl was not a giant crow or whatever-the-hell, the characters were actually developed, Michael (that's Markl to all you movie people) had his own story and was not a toddler, the story was not ended by a series of insane deus ex machinas, Wales happened, the villain was not just generally evil with no motivation, there was no stupid war crammed into the background of the story for no particular reason...

Seriously. Worst adaptation ever. The only thing it had going for it was the music.
