That person is an idiot. I hope you sent them an angry frown. >:[

& see the character design - for the most part, there were still a lot of humanoids - was the part I loved most.

You know what? I'm going to defend that a little. It was a creative decision to make the NovaCorp planet Space Earth inhabited mostly by Space Humans. Given that choice was made, I don't think it's ridiculous to point out that the Space Humans are practically lily-white.

I don't think it's super shitty for Marvel to do or anything but like. Yeah. It was their own decision to make the planet so earth-like and invite those comparisons.

& I saw quite a few black faces among the crowd on the ground during the climax. It's still a far cry from being in positions of authority or having speaking roles or clear shots though.

There also seemed to be no female pilots at all, or Ravagers. I mean, I didn't expect there to be, given the way movies are made, but it would have been nice if they expended a little bit of effort.

I remember 5 of the NovaCorp people when I watched this. Glenn Close, curly-haired white guy from Talladega Nights, angry British white guy, black guy who I totally knew from ER, and skinny black guy. So, I guess you could argue they should have had more minorities other than black and white people? I know that the other people on that planet were of many different races.

Agreed.

They can cast anyone they like. It's a conscious decision to make the human stand-ins mostly white (at least the named, good ones). I can see if they felt the need to make Peter white, because established character (though I don't think his ethnicity needed to be white) but for extras, there was no need for more pink people than PoC.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I pretty much agree. I don't think it was "super shitty", but there's no reason the Space Humans shouldn't have been more diverse and it's fair to point that out.

This is my view on it as well tbh, it wasn't super-shitty but for the human-looking aliens they could have done with being more diverse than it was(in regards to both race and gender tbh).

[personal profile] inthecorner 2014-08-21 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, going to have to agree with this one. It's not "so shitty", and I think I did notice more poc in the crowds than the tumblr poster did, but it is noticeable a lot of them are white.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-21 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Granted I've only see it once and I didn't take much of a headcount but there was at least one Asian female nova manning the battle coordinating thing when they were prepping for Ronan's arrival. I think that was the scene anyway.

I think this might be her in a different scene in the background. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NUZ9XiuQxCQ/UymMT2O3I3I/AAAAAAAAEcI/ajmz3Ee4suc/s1600/GOTG011.png

There were a ton of people of all races making up the human civilians.

Yeah, I don't know why this is the supposedly super insane thing that made the OP snap.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
They're just *looking* for something to get their knickers in a twist about. They just want to be in a mode of self-righteousness because being self-righteous alleviates their self-esteem problems or whatever personal issue they have, and they are trying to find material to be self-righteous about. It doesn't really have anything to do with their real opinions, I'm pretty sure.

sort of spoilers?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember someone calling the movie misogynist. There justification was when Drax called Gamora a whore (which from what I read was because Drax heard prisoners calling her a whore and he takes everything literally) and because Chris Pratt called a character a bitch? I don't even know when that happened, tbh.

I wish I had secret mind-reading powers. It's a perfectly reasonable thing for someone to be disappointed about, why on earth should it be about the objector's "self-esteem problems"?

Ad hominem attack = no real argument, pal.

Hmmm, I am of two minds. Don't get what that has to do with Marvel though. Casting would have been done by Disney, no?

This secret reminds me of something I read on Cracked.com...

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Here: http://www.cracked.com/blog/4-things-that-must-happen-to-keep-marvel-movies-awesome_p2/

"Even in a movie as weird as Guardians of the Galaxy, we need a white dude with guns to guide us through. The only women or non-evil minorities who show up are buried under make-up or CGI. What the hell? Between this and Avatar, Zoe Saldana is turning into a less pretentious Andy Serkis."

Pic of Zoe Saldana with Caption: "Holy shit, Zoe Saldana's black?"

I can't wait to see the cognitive dissonance

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Because apparently casting a black actress doesn't count as representation if she's in green makeup.

BUT! You just watch how they're going to start complaining that fandom is racist if Zoe Saldana's character isn't popularly shipped.

So she doesn't "count" as a black woman in one case -- because Marvel is racist. But in the other case she does count as a black woman -- because fandom is racist.

How you can rationally hold those two ideas in your head at the same time I don't know.

But I'm sure it'll happen regardless.

[personal profile] raspberryrain 2014-08-21 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I don't find that post offensive.

I think it might have been neat to have a less white Xandar, honestly. But I understand how something really minor can be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Really? This broke you? A complaing about representation that was qualified with "the movie's still good, you can enjoy it, just keep in mind that there aren't any prominent characters of colour?" That was too much?

This is why, even though I think there's a lot wrong with the social justice movement as it exists in fandom, I don't have much patience with the anti-SJ people either. Bloggers stalk, harrass, and dox someone for using the wrong word? Meh Someone wishes their blockbuster movies were a bit less white? WOW HOW DARE THEY WHAT A MASSIVE OVERREACTION I CAN'T WITH SJWs.

...really? THIS is what does it?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-08-21 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Because honestly, this is one Tumblr SJW post which I actually think has a point - the movie is generally good, but it is also noticeable that nearly all the "space humans" were white, especially when it came to 'space humans' with speaking roles.

I mean, sure, I don't blame anyone for generally getting so fed up with Tumblr SJW-ism that they block it all, but I am wondering why it is a slew of much more dramatically overreactive posts would have been fine but this isn't.
