Re: Finding it hard to identify with people/characters of a different sexual orientation?

I'm asexual and I have the same thoughts when I see any character in a relationship. I don't want to disdain people for caring about something I think is utterly silly, but I can't help having those thoughts. I also can't see any of my OCs as anything but asexual, which is troubling because I don't actually want them all to be.

First some questions: Why do you want to learn that third language? Will it open job opportunities for you later on or is it just for fun? Will you get to use it on a semi-regular basis?

I know my university at least recommends to not take language classes without knowing that you will get a use for it. I mean, it's cool to be able to speak different languages, but if you don't get to use it, it's fairly pointless and you will most likely forget a lot of it. I know my French has deteriorated a lot since I graduated high school, not to mention my Mandarin where I can barely introduce myself anymore.

It's also smart to think about other factors, like how this will affect you financially and such.

Thanks! This hits all my buttons, too!

I kid, I kid.

What are QUILTBAG people?

Oh, I agree, it does those things, too. And it also serves as a physical descriptor with a clue about Shadow's race. You might not think it's important, but it's a rare novel that doesn't describe the main character's physical traits, and there's no reason to assume that Gaiman wasn't intending that exchange to do just that.

I didn't enjoy studying language in my uni, so idk. An intensive lanuage course'd probably be more effective.

If you enjoy a student life and want to delay adulthood, go for it!

All of this is very true.

That's a thing?! Huh, I've never heard of that before. (I feel like I should've come across that in an anime at some point...)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Exactly. Which is why I'm confused that so many people in this thread want to pretend this isn't a thing that happens in real life, and also a thing that's clearly happened to the person asking Neil Gaiman that question.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
It comes up a lot in manga.

For me, it's a matter of pragmatism. If I'm going to be limited to a single beer in a night due to a drug interaction that gets me drunker than comfortable, I'm going to splurge on a $5-8 pint of craft beer.

Re: Finding it hard to identify with people/characters of a different sexual orientation?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
It only makes you a bad person if you approach others of a different orientation and go "WTF, people? That can't be real!" If you simply don't "get it" then that's okay. At least you make the effort to understand.

That said, for the most part, I just kind of go "hmm, okay" around gay relationships unless it's something that's specifically touched my heart. I don't treat it like it's any less valid than hetero stuff, even if I don't personally relate to it.

Had to plug this site because it was created by entomologists from my school! These people are really good about helping to ID mystery insects. You could just look at the pictures, but I think you'd get better and quicker results by submitting an ID request:

Just eyeballing the third one, it looks like it might be the larva of some kind of sphinx moth.

There's a term for South Americans in general that is mostly used in Spain: Sudacas.

The texture is really distinctive on milk chocolate. I don't like a full fat cheese or milk because I gott used to a low fat. I know people who can eat a straight piece of butter, with no toast or anything. =/

btw, I like black tea and milk...

Ah, okay. Is it mostly a thing in manga with teen casts? I didn't read a lot of those.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think part of the reason this happens, though, is that so very often when a woman or a POC is the main character, that's basically what the book is about. What I mean is -- if there's a POC lead then it will be about overcoming racism while if it's a woman it will be overcoming sexism (and WOC are both) and this permeates EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of the story.

And so because people are so used to a POC's race or a woman's gender as being a huge part of his or her character, when the work doesn't make a big deal of it, people have a tendency to default to white male.

It's why movies with lots of black leads get coded as "black" movies -- because there's the assumption that the film is about the racism that black people face. This is also why I cringe whenever I see a woman as a main character and the show/book/movie has to go all "GIRL POWER" on us.

Now, let me be clear -- I understand that racism/sexism/homophobia are huge and inescapable facets of people's lives given how endemic they are throughout our culture. And I'm a WOC myself. But I would be PISSED if someone tried to characterize my life as a triumph over racism/sexism because those are only things I've faced. But they're not what make me, ME. I've faced sexism and racism but that's not all that there is to me and I wouldn't want those "-isms" to characterize my life.

Their films are amazing. It's her loss, tbh.

Okay I don't think it makes you a bad person. And I don't feel that way. There are straight romances I like.

But I do get bored with seeing mostly straight romance.

OP

Yeah, I realize it's not a good thing, and once I stop and think for a minute I realize how dumb it is, it's just that initial thought. I don't know how to change that reaction, though.

But maybe you're right that a lot of straight relationships in media ARE pretty superficial.

I just found this out a week ago - also because someone posted the secret - and was devastated.

But then I found out Hak Foo was voiced by John diMaggio and everything was okay again.

Re: How do you define passive aggressive?

[personal profile] siofrabunnies 2014-08-29 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
It might be that a lot of people misuse "passive aggressive" as a synonym for "indirect". I.e., leaving a note for your roommate is not inherently passive aggressive. It could be from conflicting schedules, being intimidated by confrontation, whatever. PA is when someone says "gee, I sure wish someone would do the dishes" or just not doing dishes themselves to make you mad and punish you with fruit flies to force you to do them. PA is about using passivity in place of aggression.

I've gotten accused of being passive aggressive for being polite, too. I think it was just a perspective thing. I'm not a confrontational person, and I have this whole etiquette persona, and some people think I'm being insincere or facetious. American culture (probably other places, but I can't speak for them) (also, I'm pretty sure I remember you being USian, so sorry if I got that wrong) doesn't value public etiquette in the same way it used to. These days, people don't generally care as long as you're not outright rude. Which is fine, but it leads to etiquette-focused people being snooty/PA/etc. Sorry, went on a bit of a rant there.

So, yeah, I don't think your coworkers are necessarily passive aggressive. They might be, but I think it's more that direct people don't always see indirectness as and equal quality, and vice versa.

It could be a smart decision--or not--depending on how much longer you'll be in school, and whether the second major will make you more marketable when you get out.
