Some you are getting an awesome three day weekend because of Labor Day! The rest of us are having our usual two day. What are yall doing this weekend?

I'll be commiserating with my sister because she has to go to work Saturday and help monitor a concert her company is having. A concert in which they are only having like 10% of the audience they expected (and are totally unprepared for).

I will also be playing The Walking Dead: Season 2, now that the entire game is out. Hopefully it is as awesome as Season 1.

"Werewolves of London" was on the radio when I was driving home from work. I was alone in the car so I was howling like a dipwad along with it, but now it's stuck in my head. Fuck.

Also, I have a great urge to commission someone on deviantart to make me a picture of a werewolf holding a menu and looking for Chinese restaurants meeting a werewolf drinking Pina Colada. Just sayin'.

Horror audiobook recs

I really want to listen to a few horror/creepy audiobooks, but my search for recommmendations hasn't really yielded any results. I really love short stories, so that would be ideal. I listened to "Heart Shaped Box" and it was alright, but I wasn't totally impressed by it. I have a lot of horror anthologies in book format, but I want something to listen to.
My problem is that I find Stephen King (and, apparently, his son) a little tedious, I know just about all the classics and I don't have the patience for 20+ hours of one book. I also really can't listen to those LibriVox recordings or other layman productions. Not a great fan of long, winding series. Another problem is that I'm a fan of subtle/psychological horror and creepiness. I dislike all those "gory just for shock value" things.

So any recs for horror/ghost/creepy stories in audiobook form?

my friend was withholding attention from me the past couple of days and then gaslighted me about it (he "didn't remember" it and then made up excuses) so i got really angry and confessed that i felt abused and he broke down, as i expected, and left

BOOK CLUB THREAD

Hello!

I'm very sorry for falling off the book club post regime in the past few days. The date completely snuck up on me and I didn't realize we were nearing the end of August. 0.0

This is going to be kind of a long post, so please bear with me. Sorry in advance.

Anyway: we're now accepting recs for October's book!

There are a few changes to how recs will be entered and collected, in response with the way the poll has been going so far. We're going to try them out for this month and see how it goes.

1. Last month, we had a huge glut of recs, and some people suggested that limiting the number of recs in a month would be a good idea. In accordance, we're limiting this poll to a maximum of 15 recs. Since there are two tiebreaker losers that will automatically be re-entered into the October poll, that means there are 13 remaining spots available for new recs. This will be done on a first come, first rec basis. (If you comment too late and your rec isn't included, you are more than welcome to re-rec it next month!) Note: if there is an issue with lots of people reccing and some people never having a chance, we can further fine-tune this system down the line.

2. Recs will be limited to one per person per month, to give everyone a chance to contribute.

3. In order to make the voting process easier and more streamlined, we're asking that you include a little bit of info when you rec a book. You will need to list the book's title and author, of course, but I'd like for recs also to include a short (2-4 sentences is perfect) description of what the book is about, so people can have an idea just from reading the recs of which book(s) they'd be interested in. You can also include a link to a site or page about the book but that's not required. I'll use the provided descriptions to compile a list when the poll goes up so people can read through the list rather than opening a bajillion Google searches to get info on every book.

Thanks for bearing with me, and I hope these changes will make the book club run even more smoothly. As always, feedback is lovely! None of this is set in stone and can always be tweaked!

If you'll allow anon recs, I'm putting up Vladimir Nabokov's Pale Fire. I think someone else suggested it previously but it didn't make the final cut. It's presented as a publication of a poem, "Pale Fire," alongside commentary by the "author" of the poem - the whole thing is elaborately constructed by Nabokov to send you on a bit of a treasure hunt throughout the book. I'd suggested following the indicated footnotes as and when they appear; it's much more fun than reading the book in the traditional start-to-end format!

Also, a suggestion you may or may not want to consider: I haven't been able to get my hands on The Plague Stone (it's apparently not available at any of the libraries around here, and I can't afford to buy a copy). Perhaps some form of downvoting could be used (maybe just in the event of a tie?) - people who have trouble finding a copy of one of the suggested books could vote for that not to be the winner?
