As much as I love Peggy overall and the Steve/Peggy relationship in general, I do agree about this scene.

I would have much preferred it if it hadn't had the jealous-pissy aspect: if he had held up the shield, and she'd shot at it calmly (or with a little smirk). That would have sent a message of trust and respect and general badassery, instead of her coming across as punitive and possessive.

I agree that the scene is bad and so is what it implies about Peggy's character, and I agree that too many romances are forced in where they're not needed, but I don't think this particular scene is a necessary consequence of this particular romance.

I think this is less about forcing romance and more "Hollywood needs to rethink their idea of a srrrrng female character because they all suck." THEN focus on the less romance.

Or maybe I'm just biased because I like this romance and think it's sweet.

I agree that the scene was OTT, but I think this goes a bit too close to the line of "Strong female characters are never emotional or have feelings!" absolutism, and down that way lies really boring characters.

You know what? I. Don't. Care. I get why people might have issues with that scene, and I'm not going to say they're wrong for feeling that way, but I adore Peggy, and Steve/Peggy, and no matter how much people bang this particular drum when Peggy comes up here at Fandom Secrets, it's not going to change my mind about her, or the pairing. Sorry, just....been wanting to say that for a long time. I'll go away now.

I wish they could have kept the scene without the jealousy element -- as in, without the preceding scene where she caught him kissing Natalie Dormer. Then it would've still been crazy and irresponsible, but the kind of crazy and irresponsible people just do in these movies (shooting pointblank to test an invincible shield, sure why not) instead of, "Urgh, stereotypical female behavior."

Yeah... it was a bit "teehee, wimmins and their tempers and their periods making them irrational and so should obviously never be allowed around firearms, but its okay, because they're harmless, amiright" for my liking.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-20 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Peggy was a great character, but yeah the romance thing. The whole pre/post serum angle with Steve has always been vaguely squicky for me. Peggy obviously liked and admired Steve when he was wee, but I thought it was pretty obvious she wasn't attracted to him. Then, bam! serum Steve.. let me grope your pecs. I dunno I guess as much as I enjoy the general silliness of the CA movies I always feel that Steve probably would of had a boatload body issues and being ambushed kissed by a random stranger and Peggy's proprietary behaviour would not have helped.
tl:dr Steeeve feels. Peggy didn't need no romance.

I agree. I adore Peggy & though Steve/Bucky is my main MCU ship, I still ship Steve/Peggy. This scene pisses me off for the reasons you listed. Even if Steve & Peggy were MARRIED at this point & he was STILL caught kissing Natalie Dormer, it's still irresponsible to SHOOT AT HIM, shield or no. She could have killed or seriously injured Steve or, if the bullet ricocheted, anyone else in that room. AND as a female in the 40s (hell, or NOW) in a war in a position of power, she would have to be better than everyone at everything in order to get any respect at all. That one moment would have utterly destroyed all of her time gaining that respect because now she's become "the jealous, angry bitch."

So yeah, this scene pisses me off too.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-20 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like it was less about jealousy and more about Steve trying to slut-shame her with his "fondue" comment about her and Howard. That said, it still bothers me a lot and I can't believe that a professional soldier would shoot at an experimental shield out of spite. Those bullets had to have ricocheted, and someone absolutely could have gotten hurt. Yeah, don't like that scene, never will like it, though I don't mind Steve/Peggy.

I love Peggy (and quite enjoyed Steve/Peggy, even if I'm a bigger Steve/Bucky shipper) but absolutely agree about this scene. It might only be a short scene, but it doesn't do her character any favors.

That said...I suppose it shows that she isn't a perfect person, and that she does have jealousy issues and that sometimes her anger can get the better of her. (Granted, this is an extreme example of that, but...most everything in these films are a bit extreme, you know?)

So while I don't think it's hilarious, or cute, and while it is indeed fucked up and petty, I think it does show that she's human.

As for the romance...I don't think it was strictly necessary to the film, but I also thought it was (mostly) nice anyway. IMO if Winter Soldier had included a romance (either between Steve and Nat or Steve and Sharon) that would've been unnecessary.

On the one hand I've got no issue with Peggy being jealous over Steve kissing another lady, she's not perfect and she's allowed to have irrational emotional responses.

But on the other I don't like how the writers handled it. It's another case of 'lolol women being violent towards men is totes funny/badass' when it really isn't. It's not something I blame Peggy for though, it was the writers choice to have this scene and imo it was a poor one.

Yeah, fuck that scene. Otherwise I thought the romance in that movie was fine. I actually kind of liked it and the added emotional impact for Steve at the end. But fuck that scene and the one that led into it.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-20 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with all the criticism about this scene, but I have to say that Steve and Howard's barely concealed boners over Peggy shooting things give me life.
likeadeuce: (Default)

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2014-09-20 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The scene is dopey but I don't see what this has to do with 'romance' being 'forced' into stories. Only if you think that romance REQUIRES random jealousy leading to violence which...it does not.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-20 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this.

I love Peggy a lot, and I love the general idea of Peggy/Steve for the tragedy of their story as well as the fact that despite this loss of all the could-have-beens, she still got to move on and have both an amazing career a happy personal life with a new love and children and grandchildren.

But the romantic sub-plot as executed in the first Cap movie, to me, felt forced and like it was only there because someone thought 'well, there's gotta be a romance, right?'. And that particular scene is one I hate with a burning passion, but the entire jealousy-angle from both Peggy's and Steve's side rubbed me the wrong way? Like, they clearly liked each other, and they flirted in the bar and made vague allusions to 'maybe after the war', but they were so far from being an actual couple in a romantic relationship that the jealousy was just ott from both sides (like, even if Peggy had flirted and gone on a date with Howard after they both risked a lot to drop Steve off in enemy territory, it wouldn't have been any of STeve's business? And even if Steve had kissed that blond soldier lady because he wanted to, so what? Even if they'd been together, even if they'd been married her shooting at him and putting him & others at risk would have been irresponsible as all hell, but it wasn't even that and it just bothers me a lot that when not all that long before Peggy - rightfully so - tells Colonel Phillips that she didn't help Steve 'because she had a crush' only to turn around and do something as irresponsible as that.
