I don't necessarily feel the need to work hard when the scales are so imbalanced against me. I could be five times more talented than anyone else but being a POC, and a woman at that, I'll probably be shafted, not to mention paid less or having my knowledge undermined being in a STEM field. Like...why bother.

Oh, fuck off. This is a rant thread and after a while, that shit gets to you. She deals with it every day of her life and not everyone can just keep dealing with it 24/7/365 with a smile on their face.

I know I have depression, and that contributes to it, I know.

I don't mind working hard - All I want is a legit fair chance, and that's something I'll never get in this world because of racial imbalance.

I find this attitude so bizarre because almost everyone has some sort of disadvantage.

That white guy you work with? He could

-be gay
-be transsexual
-have ADHD
-have battled cancer
-have been abused by his parents growing up
-have younger siblings that depend on him

I mean, I'm a WOC as well, but I don't know that that's a bigger disadvantage than those listed above. It's just more visible.

I didn't say that white people didn't have problems. Sexism, classism, poverty - those happen to people of all races.

But in an interview do you think someone's going to look at the white guy and know his personal history?

I don't know why people are getting on your case about this because it's true and it's easy to feel defeated at times. I'm not even a POC but as a woman and an unattractive one at that, I constantly feel like I'm being overlooked.

It's pretty much been proven that if you are a woman and a POC you have to work 50 times harder then the average male and you'll still get the shaft most of the time. This is not an easy reality to come to terms with.

Normally I expect FS to give me a dose of reality, but this is a place that thinks tumblr is just complaining unnecessarily about everything, so this is about on par with what I expected.

Well, if you ever do decide to work hard, and you really are five times more talented than everyone else, then you probably will be acknowledged as talented in your field. However, your reward will be ever increasing work and responsibility while the white guys in your office coast.

Also, while guys in STEM fields are allowed, nay, expected to be quirky, geeky and socially awkward, you had better start working on your people skills, Missy. Also, a little makeup and some nicer clothes couldn't hurt. And don't forget to smile!

Man, I so feel that. I'm not a POC, but I am a woman in a STEM field and it's such a mess of misogynistic bullshit that half the time, I just want to throw my hands up and go, "Fine, you big, strong, smart man, why don't you learn me good and then I'll go back to the kitchen where I belong and make you a sandwich?"

...I default to sarcasm. Sometimes it helps.

If being a POC is such a hardship that nobody can get over, and a status that invalidates everything we do... why should any of us try? What of us who *are* trying? Are we struggling pointlessly in a world that's so imbalanced against us that it's insurmountable?

What does that make us? Idiots who haven't learned to give up yet?

Because if you work hard, you can still set goals and accomplish them and live a reasonably secure and comfortable life, irrespective of how well some white dude is doing? I mean I get it, equal pay for equal work is a desirable thing and it's unfair and frustrating that we're not there yet, but why is it SO important that all other accomplishments are meaningless without it?

When I see threads like these, and all the people so blatantly trolling, I wonder what makes human beings such spiteful animals. I wonder, is it just an ape thing, or would other animals be just as awful given the chance.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if neanderthals hadn't died out. How we would have treated them throughout the ages.
