You do realize that all media is about style, right?

(Sherlock is one of the most currently complained-about media properties for this "sin," but it's hardly the only one.)

Everything is about style AND substance. Otherwise you're watching 90 straight minutes of Jolly Ranchers, and that sit us delicious but after a while your teeth start to ache and all you want it if life is to have a nice steak. Jolly Ranchers begin to almost sicken you.

I'm not sure I agree. I mean, the style/substance distinction is real tricky, but I don't think it makes sense to say only style matters, if we're using a loose definition.

I also don't like the style of Sherlock personally but that's a separate matter probably.

Sure, but, some people are just not into that.

And, if you look at people who like Dole or Sherlock from previous incarnations, chances are they're less likely to be style-over-substance people.

lmao, it's so trendy to hate so hard on Sherlock. I'm not even in the fandom, but it's a decent watch. Nothing groundbreaking, but decent.

I love the visual style of it with all of the little clues popping up, helps the show not get bogged down in dialogue all the time, which is good because there's already a fair bit of it.

The portrayal of Sherlock, both in the script and the execution by Cumberbatch, is good and it's interesting that the show makes you root for a guy who's basically an egotistical prick.

I think Watson suffers a lot from the whole 'Doctor Who companion' thing, in that he's just there to make Sherlock look good by asking questions like "What's happened here, Sherlock?" "What does that mean?" etc. But he's still a decent character, and they have occassionally gave him his moments.

Really enjoyable show.

Well, if style is the only thing something has going for it, then no matter how amazingly stylish it is, it's not going to keep anyone interested for very long. Media that's solely style doesn't last, doesn't engage. I can't help but think you're assuming people critical of style over substance are critical of style itself, and that nothing can possibly look glossy and polished and sexy AND have some depth to it too.

Style doesn't mean there can't possibly be substance, but neither does something substantial have to be devoid of style. Obviously the perfect balance is engaging levels of both.

Er... if style over substance doesn't bother you, then it's a not bad. If it does, then it is. This isn't hard? As for "all media is about style", um... that's pretty simplistic. It's like saying all clothes are about style. Style is one aspect of clothing, of course, but it's not the only aspect, so when people complain that an item of clothing is more fashionable than practical, that's a completely legitimate complaint.

Much like when people complain that Sherlock is more about snarky dialogue and the two leads than it is about well written plots, that's also a legitimate complaint. Clearly, it bothers you a great deal to the extent you feel the need to sort of make up stuff about what "the media" consists of, but there's no need to feel threatened by that. Some shows are just fun to watch, they don't need to have complex plots or writing. Chin up, OP!

But... even if media is focused heavily on style, that doesn't mean a show ought to be exclusively style. Some people might like cake with a lot of icing, but a cake that's 99% icing and 1% cake isn't a good cake.
