Writing Thread

We used to do this occasionally but it hasn't happened lately. So, writers, how is it going? What's on your mind?

Over the last 7 years I've written 15 first drafts of novels. I'm finally revising one for the first time and I don't know why I was so scared of it. I'm actually enjoying the process of going through and deciding what works and what doesn't.

I've heard that you're supposed to finish a draft, then shelve the manuscript for a few months. If you just constantly work on it then it becomes too much. Having a few years separating you from the book put everything in perspective.

What's the book about?

Re: Writing Thread

I'm like that sometimes and then other times I go through working on WIPs and finishing anything that's close to the end. I try to just go with whatever random impulse comes over me as it comes. I sometimes have to help the impulse to continue/finish things along though by reminding myself of why I was excited about the story in the first place.

Re: Writing Thread

I have a rewrite I'm hoping to complete this week and a brand new story I plan to have rolled out by the 18th. (It's only supposed to be up to 2000 words, and I know that can be done in that amount of time.) As for what's on my mind, well, there's this: http://ljsecret.livejournal.com/588707.html?thread=237288611#t237288611. It's been a fun thread to watch (even though I know rationally I shouldn't enjoy it so much).

Good luck! It's such a nice feeling to finish things, especially when you've given yourself a deadline that you actually met.

As for that thread, my first thought was "7-12 reviews a chapter is unpopular?" and then it spiraled down from there. I put it on hold for a moment but this is just the sort of thing I can never look away from for long.

I need to start the actual writing of my thesis and I am terrified, so much that I find it difficult to start.
Partially because I've been getting this paranoia that my advisor doesn't actually think much of me or my ideas, and always criticizes my writing (and sometimes their corrections aren't actually grammatically correct...). I'm just so anxious and it's not helping the situation.

Re: Writing Thread

Gyah, I went back to a story I stopped writing last year because it was a trainwreck, only to find that it's still a trainwreck and I loathe it even though it's a story I've wanted to write for ages.

I will no doubt get back to it. Sometime.

So instead I attempted a "weekend warrior" challenge last week on a private board I'm a member of, where they post prompts at 6pm Pacific Time and you have until sometime on Sunday to write a 750-word flash piece and post it. I noodled an idea for one of the prompts overnight, started writing at 1pm on Saturday, put an END at the bottom at 3:15--and it was over 1100 words. So much headdesking.

But I looked at it and decided that rather than cutting it for a non-paying contest, I'm going to expand it and start subbing it places that might pay me actual cashy money for it. Because the goal of the contest is to get you writing, and it succeeded in spades. I even like this one. It's up to 2600 words. Yes, I write very spare first drafts.

So, yay, I guess.

I've been on a dry spell for 6 months approximately. Last week I really had to concentrate on school work with deadlines piling up, so of course that's when an idea hits me. I'm starting to work on it now, script-format (I haven't done that in a while) and it involves undead.

I'm feeling it might not be as good of an idea as I think it is. But it's here and I'm so happy and I won't let it leave until I'm done with it.

I have like, three or four different fanfic plotlines I want to write, one original idea I want to write, and I want to make dragon bios for my FR dragons, but everytime I try to write something, I just feel blocked, and I know that the best tip for writer's block is to just keep writing, but then I get anxious about my writing sucking. |D

I'm having opposite problems in my original fiction ideas and my fanfiction ideas. My original fiction brain keeps throwing out fun new information about the three urban fantasy characters who have been living in my head for a while, but has no idea what kind of plot to throw at them. And my fanfiction brain has a couple vignettes it wants to write in the universe of the "Ghost" music video, but the characterization in the source material is just thin enough that I can't quite get a handle on how I want to write these people.

Warning, some whiny venting ahead:

I have so many ideas in my head, but when I sit down to actually type it out, it just seems stilted. I think part of the problem is that I'm a very visual person and I can see it flowing better as a comic, but I can't draw :(.

Anyway, I'm wondering if I should start writing it out as a comic book script with the hopes of someday finding an artist who would work with me.

I've just had the annoying experience of getting four and a half thousand words into writing a fic before I realised that it genuinely wasn't going anywhere. I'm going to have to reframe the idea and start from scratch. It's extremely annoying.

I'm finally posting a fic I've had in my head since last April and have been writing bits and pieces since last June.
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10973107/1/All-That-Glitters

I'm so happy to be finally posting it, even though it's kind of a weird experience. I have another fic that's a different fandom's main OTP written under a pseudonym, and it gets a ridiculous amount of hits/reviews compared to this one. But I kind of knew that going in, so slightly prepared? And if I keep going in the direction I'm going, I'm fairly certain that my fic has the potential become THE defining fic of the pairing?

Like, a really bold claim, but there are literally only 58 fics for the pairing and only one above 100k words. IDK, it's weird. I've never written for such small a ship before.

And then there's my original fic which I really should work on...

I'm actually doing pretty well writing-wise. My original YA is coming along and I'm excited about some of the characters. It's about these kids who die and get recruited to work for Death. To be an Associate of Death you have to 1. Die; 2. For someone else; 3. Who you don't like. One boy meets up with the girl he died for and there is all kinds of drama.

The short story I'm working on is coming along great. It's based on the myth of the King in the Mountain. A girl in the middle of WW4 goes to look for the one person who can save her nation and she finds the Queen in the Mountain.

The fanfic is getting next to no response, but meh. Pocahontas is a 20 year old fandom anyway, and nobody really wanted this fic anyway. I wrote it for my own twisted pleasure. Here're the first four chapters: http://archiveofourown.org/works/2426294/chapters/5369792

So yeah. I rock the written word.

Recently I've gotten back into the writing spirit! I had a horrible writer's block because I started viewing my work as a job to be done. That really kills enthusiasm, let me tell you.

But after like six months I finally got it back. I've been getting farther on my original work and and I'm planning on getting back to my fanfictions soon.

I got the cover from my publisher for my novelette and I was so happy that it was PERFECT. After seeing so many terrible covers in the M/M genre I was seriously worried--and worried that I'd be too nice to want to say anything negative about it/ask them to change it if I didn't like it...

I wrote some fic for The Hobbit but I'm kind of nervous about posting fandom fic. I think I'll wait til I've finished properly the multi-chapter one, otherwise I'll chicken out and leave it unfinished.

On the original fiction side of things:
Currently doing some reading on immortality and anti-ageing for a sci-fi story I've been planning for a while.

I also have at least three other ideas that won't go way so I've put them on a backburner:
1) Therapist for superheroes and the shit she has to deal with. IDK I think of it as a kind of slice-of-life weird humour thing, and what happens when a supervillian decides to get some counselling. Partly inspired by that Batman tailor comic strip and a prompt on the nano forums.
2) A classic sort of beauty-and-the-beast love story dynamic. With food. And magic. Set in an AU Interbellum vaguely-European land with adorable villages. Grumpy shut-in critic falls in love with a magician who makes magical desserts. I just want something cute to read.
3) Something with classic old-school vampires. Either an all-out parody (Suspicious vaguely-Romanian count moves to large city and is obviously a vampire) or maybe a blend of steampunk-London and vampire hunting. IDK. I just really loved reading The Historian and want something fun that isn't goddamn PNR tropes.
