Treating people nicely when it suits them in order to cultivate a relationship that can be exploited later if need be? Some sociopaths do that.

Manipulation is most definitely how sociopaths act. Doing so via charming (or in this case 'nice') behavior or flattery for their own personal pleasure or gain is also a known trait.

Why does it matter if it's from a bad book? Even bad books can have some things that people want to take away from them because they're appreciated.

...pretty sure anyone who reblogs this would do it pretty tongue-in-cheek. Or as a pointer for when you want to really nail your argument during a debate without the whole conversation derailing into a "Yo Mama!" flamewar before you even get to the meat of the issue.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not being a sociopath, that's called behaving like a mature adult. It's called not starting fights you don't need to start. It's called not burning your bridges until you've, like, actually gotten across them. It's called diplomacy.

Sociopaths don't have empathy. If you have, and exercise, empathy, you realize that your feelings are not the only feelings that are important, and therefore it's important to avoid openly hurting people un necessarily, not treating other people like human beings with feelings is the quickest and easiest way to make them hate you. Once they hate you, it's highly likely they'll never stop hating you. And the fewer people hate you, the better your life will be.

I'm confused as to how that's a sign of mental illness.

I've reblogged it, and it's totally true. If you have to be mean to someone, people won't believe that you're a nice, good person anymore. I see it all over fandom, it is what it is. It's not sociopathic by any means.

Man, you have no idea what shitty things have loads of notes on tumblr.

Or maybe you do, but this one is among the real baffling ones.

Tumblr will uncritically mass-reblog anything that is the new trend.

*shrugs* I don't know... I love Laurell K Hamilton -- The Anita Blake series is my favorite. It's fiction, and I take is as such.

[identity profile] brandiweed.livejournal.com 2015-05-09 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
My only thought on LKH of late is that it's a pity fandom_wank died off before she came out as polyamorous...

In all fairness, LKH has written much worse books that contain much much worse quotes.

I think the thing that drives me nuts in terms of missing author context is that it's a perfect example LKH's tendency to reuse the same word 23092390 in a paragraph to get a hamfisted point across.

At least it's not "spill" I suppose.

its a power fantasy for mainly meek people

Well, it does seem like a sound policy... if you're a villian.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
There are some I can think of that follow this advice well. And I would say that it is much harder to convince someone that you're nice if their first impression is of you being mean (even if you were having a really bad day and didn't actually mean it).

Original Text: "My father had taught me to be nice first, because you can always be mean later, but once you've been mean to someone, they won't believe the nice anymore. So be nice, be nice, until it's time to stop being nice, then destroy them."
--Laurell K. Hamilton, A Stroke of Midnight (via wordsnquotes)

10,218 notes

Secret Text: It drives me nuts how many people reblog this like it's an empowering worldview instead of realizing that:

1) It's a quote from a truly terrible novel
2)This is how sociopaths act and it's not at all admirable or healthy

(But then it IS Laurell K. Hamilton so I should know better than to expect a sane or even mature point of view even from her nutjob characters.)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe this is a trigger quote for asshole. Is not like we can be nice all the time.

"Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet."

It's worked well for me so far.

It would have been a decent quote if people cut the last sentence out. It just sounds stupid with the "destroy them" part.
