Listen, I can appreciate the other two prequels, at least somewhat

But Phantom Menace really is just a phenomenonally bad movie, all feelings about Star Wars aside. It's just really poor

There's no reason to think that it's the best besides trolling. There just isn't.

I completely agree with you about the movie, but I think people can love a movie for reasons like nostalgia, the actors, certain action scenes that just work for them etc., without it having to be good. Could be something like that.

not trolling.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
And I don't understand how anyone can like Attack of the Clones. Now that's a hot mess of a movie that doesn't know what to do with it's plots, arringly cuts between emotional moods, and suffers from the stilted writing more than any other.

Revenge of the Sith is saved from a similar fate only by the fact that the action and emotional tension of the Republic's fall makes up for a lot.

Aside from the overlong pod race, Phantom Menace is a pretty good movie.

Or, the sort of person who likes TPM and the sort of person who likes the next two don't overlap that much. That makes sense to me.

There's no reason to think that it's the best besides trolling. There just isn't

Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan.

The only reason I watched TPM like 6 times in the theater. More than enough reason for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's just awful. The story is incomprehensible. (And it REEKS of geek, I hate all that Untouchable Female crap they make Amidala wear." I cringed when I saw that in the previews.)

I smell troll as well, a la "look at what a kicky independent free-thinker I am!"

I don't quite get the seething hatred for the prequels - they were more boring and had a lot of bad choices than outright atrocious (Though the fact that there's such a big hullabaloo that spawned two different animated adaptations - one of which ran for at least 5 seasons - on top of the movie about the Clone Wars is baffling to me)

I'd rather watch A New Hope, the last hour of Empire Strikes Back, and Revenge of the Sith than any of the others.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the seething hatred and ~~~outrage~~~ is some definite dumb nerd bullshit.

But at least for me, I think, they are kind of fascinating because they're bad in ways that end up being really interesting and illustrative. They somehow managed to end up being more interesting as failures than as movies, almost.

It's like this. Right after the first movies came out George Lucas said that in roughly twenty years time, after the original cast aged up, he was going to do more Star Wars movies. And fans jumped on board that train.

And then the sequels came out. Not only did they have a different cast but the scripts read like something churned out during a last minute all nighter, not the finely honed epics that Lucas had promised them to be.

So it was a combination of feeling bait and switched and having a massive case of expectation let down.

Hey, I can't watch any Star Wars movie! Whenever it was played in class, I read books instead. Whenever it was on TV, I turned the channel. It's (along with Jurassic Park) almost become a sort of inside joke now where I'll actively avoid watching a single movie in the series, haha.

I like the first JP okay (haven't seen in 20 years) but it's really hard to avoid Star Wars if you hate it as much as I do.

I was maybe ten when Phantom Menace came out. I have seen the other Star Wars movies and loved them, but I loved Phantom Menace. I even loved Jar Jar Binks. I guess since I did see it when I was young, it does have certain nostalgic value for me so it's hard for me to think it's really as bad as everyone says. I still don't think it's as bad as everyone says, but I can see how overall it's a weaker movie.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's the same for me. I was about 12, I think? And I had a MASSIVE crush on Obi-Wan. So while I watch it now and can see the things that irritate people, I still think of it pretty fondly.

Is this an okay place to ask about the famous Red Letter Media review? I guess I'm doing it either way.

I heard so much about how great it was and how insightful the guy behind it is in explaining all the reasons people don't like the movie but couldn't quite figure out themselves. And then I tried to watch it and couldn't make it through the first ten minutes. So okay, it's just not my thing.

But one of the few arguments made in the video that I actually saw and have seen others repeat has never made sense to me. The argument about how there's no main character. So what? Does he elaborate on that in the parts that I didn't watch? He didn't in the part I saw and whenever I see people repeat the argument all they do is make that one simple statement and act like that's a criticism in itself. I don't understand why it should be. Why can't we have a movie without a main character? It's unusual but I don't see why it's inherently bad. You could argue that this film didn't do it well and that would be fair, but I don't understand the way the argument was presented here.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
He explicitly says that it's fine to have a movie without a protagonist. He thinks that it doesn't work in this movie, and in particular, that the lack of a protagonist contributes to a more general confusion in the storyline which is a major project for the movie. And also, he thinks that Lucas isn't a good enough director to make a movie without a clear protagonist.

So, yes, he addresses your point.

I jus think there is no excuse for Ja Ja binks
Also George Lucas writes dialogue like he needs to get out more.

I'm hopeful but nervous about the new film.

I can totally understand someone having any single one of the opinions expressed here. But all at once? Nah. The hit-the-beserk-button-of-every-single-fan stink-bombing is just too slick and too concise and too sound-bite-perfect and covers all the nerd-rage bases too brilliantly and efficiently to be real. It's the kind of provocation I'd expect from a US midterm elections GOP attack ad. 8/10.

I loved that movie because I was 13 and really liked Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan. Also, I thought the sea monsters on Naboo were super cool. I love sea monsters.

Um. It seems like you just don't like Star Wars? I mean, if you only enjoy 1/6 films, it's probably just not your thing. Which is fine, just... if you're not much of a fan, of course you're not likely to have the same opinion as most fans who, you know, liked more than one movie in the series.

It would be tough no matter who took up Star Wars. It's a classic and it was only able to become what is was under very special circumstances. In other words, it's unique.
