Asking really personal questions in exchange for promoting a family friendly movie you're in, (that has literally nothing to do with drugs or alcohol btw) doesn't seem like a "fair" trade to me imo.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
This. There are some topics that are not appropriate for an interview that's meant to promote a movie and that is one of them.

Some interviews are meant to be hard hitting and touch on emotional subjects. Others are meant to field questions like: "What did you enjoy most about working with X? Was there any romance offscreen? How did you squeeze into your costume?"

That was unprofessional as fuck of the interviewer, and RDJ was right in walking out. He didn't "owe" a civil response to someone acting like a tabloid reporter.

IAWTC.

Even if this had been an interview about Iron Man and somebody had asked him something like "did you relate to the character's alcohol problems because of your own past with drugs" it still would have been very rude if the question just came out of nowhere.

Nah. As RDJ said, that wasn't a Diane fucking Sawyer interview. It was about a stupid movie. If Guru-Murphy wanted to do a serious interview with RDJ, he should have asked to do one instead of blindsiding the actor. I'm glad he got blasted for acting like such an asshole.

Ummmmm, no. He's there to talk about his work. It's not a "symbiotic relationship." Interviewers aren't Nice Guys entitled to juicy personal stories just because they're helping out with the press tour.

And especially when the actors are often contractually obligated to do those promotional interviews. They don't have a choice about going to the interview, but I think RDJ was absolutely within his rights to walk out of an interview that was not about the movie he was promoting.

RDJ seems to understand that the obligations of the job does not mean answering uncomfortable questions about his past trauma when promoting a movie.

Guru-Murphy does not seem to understand that when he is doing these interviews he is not a journalist. he is a professional sound-bite collector. He is there to get something fluffy and entertaining for his show, and the people he is interviewing are there to sell a movie, Symbiotic relationship. He starts. He was acting like a paparazzi rooting around for human pain, trying to dig deeper and take more than was offered by his subject, simply because he doesn't want to do fluff pieces. which is fair enough if he doesn't want to do fluff pieces, but the people he is interviewing did not agree to be there to further his career by exposing their pain, they can and should walk out.

Unfortunatly, Guru-Murphy is in a position to spin the story as "Ungrateful celeb being a wimp and totally unfairly walking away from an agreed interview, because her's not willing to answer my hard hitting questions!"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Fortunately, Guru-Murphy's attempt to spin the story failed.

Often, in promotional tours, they are supposed to have some control.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The interviewers are often limited on the number of questions they can ask and the scope of those questions so that they can fit many interviews in. I'm pretty sure that's why RDJ was looking over (probably to either his publicist/PR person or to a Disney/Marvel publicist/PR person). And after the interviewer didn't bring it back to the movie, RDJ probably got a signal that he could leave.

But, yeah, the insult is a little over the top.

Like the others have said, the question was inappropriate for the context, and RDj was certainly well within his rights to piss off.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Totally on RDJ's side on this one. I thought he handled it well & did far better than I would have. Believe me, a single insult would NOT be the worst I would do if I were in the same situation. He was on a publicity tour. Talking about a movie. These interviewers have a narrow scope for their questions & they'd probably go through PR first, I would imagine. Out of the blue, this dickbag starts asking personal questions on a promo interview? No. That's not what RDJ signed up for. That is NOT what was agreed to. He was 100% in the right to walk out on that fucker.

nah

nah kid

i feel you

but nah

RDJ was totally within his rights to do this. A brief promotional interview is not the proper place to ask "hard-hitting" (and IMO rather insultingly worded) questions, especially not about the actor's past that he has made plain he would rather move on from (like a lot of people.) I think people have a right to let bygones be bygones, especially if the person they were has no bearing on the person they are now.

Little off topic but...

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Does RDJ ever come across as SUPER insecure to anyone else?

Like, whenever I watch him, it just seems like he NEEDS everyone to love him.

Maybe I'm reading into it but it always seems like he's trying so hard to be cool and appealing and for me it just kind of goes to desperate.

Anyone else ever get that impression?

And can I just add that RDJ has been nothing short of forthcoming about his entire experience that played out so publicly, so really, the only reason for the interviewer to bring this all up in the first place was to embarrass RDJ? Which seems stupid to me because, again, who hasn't seen the pictures of the guy in a jail jumpsuit in court? Did the interviewer really think his interview was as low was RDJ could get? If he'd thought it through at all, he'd realise all he'd do was come off as an ass. It would be no different than if someone asks Carrie Fisher about her drug use while promoting Star Wars this Christmas. It's just classless.

Bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not even a RDJ fan, but this is total bullshit. He was there to promote a silly movie, not to have his unpleasant past dredged up by some random asshole. It's the equivalent of a distant relative or stranger needling you about your bad judgment calls and mistakes you made in your life, only in front of the entire world.

Maybe you're perfect and never made any mistakes, or maybe you don't have assholes in your life who would randomly give you shit about your past failures when you least expect it, but I happen to know that feels like and let me tell you, it sucks. I nearly cried just watching that "interview" because I could relate so fucking much.

RDJ has done LOADS of interviews and his bullshit radar went off with this guy. The intent of the interview was to do a rather simple interview mostly talking about the film he was promoting. Instead, the interviewer throws him all these personal questions that had nothing to do with the agreed intent of the interview. The interviewer knew exactly what he was doing, and that was a complete dick move on his part. He got the reaction he wanted, and then posted it online trying to make it seem like RDJ is a jerk just to get the 10 minutes of attention he wanted.

How would you like it if for your job you thought you were going to talk to a person about the work you have been working on, but instead the person starts asking you a bunch of questions about your personal life that has nothing to do with your work?

that's bullshit, I don't give a shit about the Avengers or RDJ, but he sat down for a promotional interview for a dumb superhero movie, he didn't sit down for a tell-all 20/20 special. interviews have context, and the interviewer was being a sneaky brat with his intentionally incendiary questions. all actors are contractually obligated to appear in promotional interviews for their movies, that doesn't mean that every aspect of their personal lives is up for discussion, and that's a fucked up way of thinking.

"so I know you're here to promote your new cartoon "Puppy Goes to College" but it says here your uncle molested you when you were 9, want to talk about that?" "welcome to the show and congrats on your new movie, now how about that time you were assaulted by a stalker? how's that been?"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
He's the same old creep just slightly older with more self-control but it's bound to come out at some point. Still weirds me out how much people love him and constantly confuse his dickishness for 'charm'.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, context is everything. If this had been some sort of biographical interview about him, and his life, then yeah, he can rightly expect those questions to come up and should either be prepared to answer them or say no to the interview.

But it wasn't. I didn't like the insult tossed out, but I applaud him for leaving the interview.
