When do you consider someone well-off?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Income's a given, but what are some telltale signs that make you think someone's rich or comes from a family that's pretty well off?

Re: When do you consider someone well-off?

Nice house, nice car. I usually don't notice any other "signs" since everyone now has an iphone and $6 coffee drink on hand.

Nah. I know people who had nice houses and cars, but they were broke and in debt. Largely because they had to fork over their money every month to pay for more house and car than they could afford.

Anytime I meet someone who shows off how much stuff they have, or how much this or that cost, I assume they are broke and in debt. The people I know who were truly well off, the VPs of Fortune 500 companies, the military officers, they never tried to prove anything to me. A person is well off when they don't have to brag.

Expensive non-dress shoes

All the other stuff is debatable, but poor people do not waste money on expensive shoes that don't even look good, and rich people, no matter how casual or "slobby" their clothes/car/accessories are, usually do not pass up high quality shoes for something cheaper when they look about the same.

I know literal crackheads who buy hundred pound trainers.

lol are you fucking with me? The richest multi-millionaires I know have 15 year old pairs of sandals and the poorest people I know shell out hundreds for the newest sneakers.

Poor people buy expensive things all the time. The difference is, they save up for it and it's a huge deal for them to have something nice to wear/own/etc. whereas rich people just buy it and throw it away next season.

The richest people I've known/met wear khakis and sensible sneakers that you can get from any department store. Polo shirts from JC Penny's seem to be popular.

The poor people I meet always seem to have the trendiest clothes. It's a huge part of the reason they're poor.

Income is not a given, actually. If someone is making 10k a year doing hobby work but have a net worth of ten million dollars, they are not poor in the least.

Meanwhile, a doctor who makes 200k a year but has 300k in student loans and a 500k mortgage is not well off. They just seem like they are and are living well beyond their means. Should an accident happen where the doctor loses their job or can't practice any more, they're fucked and still on the hook for near $1M in debt. People who live like that are taking huge risks.

Conversely, a doctor who is making 200k a year and is managing to save most of it, they're well off.

Net worth matters a lot more than income. Higher income makes it easier to gain net worth, but is not always related.

Corollary to this:

If you have a mortgage, get it insured so that if you can't work, it gets paid. This is exactly why they offer it to you when you get one.

It's hard to say. I went to school with a lot of these people. It's a subtle combination of how they dress, wear their hair, speak. Truly well-off people - those born into it - will generally never "sink down" to lower levels, and talk to people like they take respect for granted. But not in a rude/macho way - it's more organic. I can't quite explain really.

Ironically, the most popular car amongst millionaires is a Toyota Corolla. People who are legitimately wealthy generally are such because they're good with money, and this means not spending a lot on frivolous flashy things to keep up with their neighbours. That's the mark of the (would-be) upper middle class slowing burying themselves in debt.

So just about the only good gauge is real estate owned, as that's an investment that appreciates, so wealthy people who are also good with money tend to buy it. It's also trivially easy to see what that property was assessed at; that will give you a decent gauge of their minimum worth.

If you can afford a medical emergency without being totally destroyed by it, you're well-off.

Generally... being able to own a home and the ability to travel for pleasure without huge financial impact.

So far everything else in life has varied: I've known very poor people with "nice" cars and opulent things, I've known very rich people with very simple tastes who buy clothes at thrift stores and own mid range cars...

I've never met someone who wasn't wealthy who owned property and could afford to vacation without breaking the bank.

For a young person's family being well-off? Little to no student debt.

For older people, IDK, it depends on the person.

making enough money each month to be able to pay off all your bills, get all food, pay for all gas, put something into savings, and have enough money leftover to be able to pay off some emergency (like a car breakdown or some insurance deductible) and still get something nice that costs more than $50.

I probably think about my life goals a little too much but whatever. Gotta have some dream, y/y?

They have a vacation home, have vacationed for significant periods of time in Europe, own expensive brand name clothing (Burberry, Prada, etc). Pronouncing "hu-" words "yu-" (it's really specific but I have a theory). Using "I have" rather than "I got." Stuff like that.

I agree with everyone who said that people who show off their designer handbags/shoes/cars are usually closer to middle class, or come from families that think rich = everything must be expensive.

My family is very well-off, but we're actually ignored by the social climbers. Our big custom-made home is too far out of town, most of our clothes are from L&M or online, and every car we own is used. It helps that my grandparents on either side knew what it meant to be poor, and took steps to make sure their kids wouldn't face the same issues.
