50 Don't worry, if people don't write more K/S after that movie, it'll probably only be because they're busy writing McC/S (seriously, Karl Urban >>> Chris Pine, but they're still both equal to slash when added to The Quinto)

If it makes you feel better, Heiderich's unconditional acceptance of Noah - which, you might want to note, is NOT shared by Hughes and other Nazis - very much suggests that even if he sympathized with the Thule Society for political reasons (and nothing suggests that he did), it probably wasn't for the racist ideology.

And along with that, remember that the Hughes in Munich in essence was the same as the one in Amestris. Questionable political leanings does not a bad person make, and the history behind the rise of Nazism in post-WWI Germany is far, far more complex than "Germans were nationalists who hated Jews".

Re: 39

[identity profile] baka-deshi.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
The other thing to note is that eugenics was not a horror invented and purported solely by Germans/Nazis/the Thule Society as a lot of people believe - it was sadly quite a widespread field of research. The movie was set in 1923...and just two years earlier, there was an international eugenics conference in New York, NY where certain speakers were advocating eliminating 'degenerates' from the gene pool. Scary, scary stuff.

Canonically, wasn't there a line where Alfons is talking to Noa/h about this exact issue and came out with "I just want to build rockets?" That doesn't mean he's not guilty of turning a blind eye to the nasty ambitions of the Thule Society, but it seems clear his crime (if any) was mainly a misguided sense of nationalism...and that changes by the end anyway, when he chooses to help Ed and give his life's work to Ed instead. I think given what we know about the character it's easy to say he could have been groomed into some severely nasty stuff, but his relationship with Ed ended up pulling him away from those influences. (Another example: if he were really into the insane eugenics BS the Thule Society was forwarding, he wouldn't have seemed so happy that Ed brought Noa/h home ;)

And you know what else? There were a lot of people who began as nazi's until they knew what was going on. Like The White Rose, a group against Hitler. The people that started it began as nazi's and loved Hitler until they realized what was happening and they went against Hitler.

Don't worry. Whether Heiderich was a nazi or not, I'm sure he wouldn't have stayed one as soon as he knew what was going on.

Re: 39

The people that started it began as nazi's and loved Hitler until they realized what was happening and they went against Hitler.

No, they weren't. The members of the White Rose were never Nazis, they were at best ambivalent. In fact, Christoph Probst was educated at an institution which opposed national socialism in the curriculums, Willi Graf belonged to the Graue Orden, an illegal Catholic youth organization (he was arrested for that and kept captive for several weeks in '38). And Professor Huber was promised a teaching position in Berlin - which he eventually didn't get because he refused to compose marching songs for a Nazi student organization.

Check your facts before you post.

9. I enjoy watching that show, too. XD Although my favorite PBS Kids show is WordGirl.

17. People actually say that? O_o;;; I've always thought Indian people look really beautiful! (Although I lived in India for a time, so that could be part of it.)

38. Wh-what? No Hiro? He was the only character I watched the show for when I tried to watch it!!!

39. I think some people were Nazis without...exactly believing in some of the horrible things they did? AFIK, the Nazis REALLY misled the German people in the beginning--they REALLY believed that they were doing the 'right' thing. I can see Alfons not agreeing with the genocide that would come, but thinking that the Nazis would do great things for Germany. It doesn't make him a horrible person--just decieved like a large chunk of the German population.

53. ...That's really creepy. I can see a Hot Topic-going goth-wannabe teen acting like Light (yes, I'm being horribly sterotypical, and I actually buy anime t-shirts at HT so I'm being a hypocrit), but...a mother? A...a nuturing mother? That's so...against what you'd typically think.

67. There was a dance on So You Think You Can Dance that did that to me...

You are correct, Anon. To a point, at least.

God, I'm such a huge fucking nerd for this but -

I think it's stated somewhere that Yugi is the Reincarnation of Yami and Ryou is the reincarnation of Thief King Bakura.

Having said that, Bakura (Yami Bakura, Dark Ryou, WTFEVER) believes that he is (and I think has stated as such) Zorc, when in all actuality, just part of his soul resides in Zorc, kinda like what he did with the puzzle by sealing a portion of his soul inside of that piece, he also sealed another portion in Zorc. SO, by all technicality, yes, he is Zorc.

I miss YGO fandom ;-;

6. People shouldn't judge you for liking yuri any more than for liking yaoi. As for finding other friends who like it, there are plenty of fun people into yuri. If I were you I'd join a comm that appeals to you and just start commenting on stuff and communicate with the people there. In my experience it's not threatening and people aren't to get personal with you about why you like yuri if that's what you're worried about. (Again, that's my experience -- but good luck.)

21. People need to chill out about furries so that someone like you can have a little fun without worrying.

27. Police secret! That song always helps me a little too. And when I'm feeling really bad it's Invisible Sun, depressing though it is.

61. I can relate. I used to enjoy RP sometimes and now and then people still ask me to which flatters me but I just don't think I'm any good at it. I think some people aren't that happy that I stopped or that I never got into their games but it wasn't because I didn't like them; I
just felt like I wasn't any good.

Invisible Sun still speaks of a glimmer of hope. Sometimes it's the glimmer of hope that shows us the path to the light.

King of Pain is the song that helps me the most, really. Makes me think about the nature of pain. He's not trying to say that pain isn't real or should be ignored, but more it's a part of life and the cosmic scheme of things. And if we learn to accept this pain, accept that we're all kings of pain, maybe we can take control of it instead of pain taking over ourselves. And maybe, we will all find someone who can dethrone us. Atleast, help us off that thorny throne. If only for a little.

1. Well, Jesus, I hope not - those are all my favourites. oO;

7. I rarely meet straight guys who ship guys together. :/ It's kind of disappointing...I've only met one other. You people should be more vocal about it. Fangirls would kill for you.

8. Well, I don't like it either, but if it bothers you so much, then don't read it.

33. I always thought it was a perfectly legit reason, too. I mean, who cares why someone else learns a language? They're learning it for whatever reason they want, if they're commited, what's the difference?

54. XDD ♥

[identity profile] turkwriter.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
2. Well, I think the SS arc was less about Rukia’s development than about the development of both those rescuing her and those taking her captive. Notice that the most development Rukia had while imprisoned was when her past was revealed. I’ll agree with you that it’s not fair that it’s only the girls who seem to need rescuing in Bleach, but I wouldn’t say Rukia became less of a character simply because she once needed rescuing (everyone does at some point).

8. Wow, that’s some bad photoshop.

13. Sendhil>everyone else on earth looks-wise.

17. I think he’s Indian-looking AND gorgeous. Why the hell can’t it be both?

4. ... heh, I don't blame you. I don't like to bring up that I used to like it, either, since most people seem to hate it so much. I don't absolutely hate it, even now -- I just... am not interested in it anymore.

17. ... what? In what way does he not look Indian, and why would people think that was a compliment?

33. I agree. Learning another language is interesting and useful (and hard to do), so who cares why anyone else is doing it? As long as they don't go around speaking fangirl Japanese, anyway, because that's kind of obnoxious. But yeah, there is a certain stigma attached to being a Japanese-learner who is also an anime/manga fan, and that's too bad, really.

42. There's something strangely appropriate about this secret being in the same batch as 33. So um. See above! It's awesome that you took the time and effort to learn a foreign language, no matter why you did it.

/enthusiastic language-geek

n!s 3. Hikki is a J-pop artist, technically. If you mean she's better than all the helium-voiced cutesy idol singers, okay, I'll give you that, but it doesn't make any sense to say a certain artist is better than a genre of which she is technically a part.

He he he. Yes. I've met some new people and the whole lot are still really big fans. I considered mentioning that I use to read it but. . .I kinda felt like I shouldn't. Maybe just smile politely and keep it to myself.
