I don't believe in Tumblr mental illness.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that anyone who posts on Tumblr has the mental illness they claim. It's not just something to look cute and unique, it's a real thing with real consequences, not just sitting on your couch wrapped in a blanket drinking tea. I think that if anyone posts on the Internet about their "disorder", they don't have it.

Change my view?

Nah, you've nailed it. Ever since the ADHD and Aspergers bubble burst, kids have been reaching around for something to make them seem special for their own ego. A lot of them are now going for a generic mental health problem so as they can't get their specialness busted when challenged for a specific diagnosis. It is a trend. Still not as annoying as the asexual until they get a date trend though. That one is just sad.

That's just an extremely illogical view to have. Mental illness isn't that rare. Statistics alone would indicate that some Tumblr users have a mental illness.

I think that if anyone posts on the Internet about their "disorder", they don't have it.

But there are people that have talked about their mental illness online, and the mental illness is documented in things like court records and traditional media interviews. So...like I said, your view is just really poorly thought out.

I don't really doubt it some of it honestly. If you're afraid to leave the house, avoid responsibilities, and spend all day on the computer instead, something's up.

Re: I don't believe in Tumblr mental illness.

Pff that's pretty extreme, to say that no one can even mention having a mental illness on the internet or they're lying.

People who abuse it and use it as a "get out of jail free card" all the time, sure.

But what you're saying here has the implication of "you can't talk about it or you're lying" which is not helpful for anyone when it comes to understanding these things. Sweeping things under the rug and never talking about them doesn't do any good.

Opening up communication about them and making people informed does.

I would say that it's true 95% of the time. Especially if they self diagnose or have like 10 mental disorders that would prevent them from being able to do anything.

Well I'm sure that some do. Just not all.

Also, more importantly: what significance should it have? es, some mental illnesses can have nasty side effects in how you deal with the world and people (trust me i know), but it should never be a carte blanche for shit behavior.

Re: I don't believe in Tumblr mental illness.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I can change your views, but they're really fucking stupid.

Of course some people probably wrongly self-diagnose. But, like, we can go out and estimate how many people in the population suffer from mental illness of various kinds, and the number is far greater than zero. It would be shocking if there was no one on Tumblr with those issues. And posting on the Internet is not a sign of having or not having a mental illness. That's... really fucking stupid.

Some people on Tumblr have mental illnesses. Statistically speaking, that's a fact. You're an idiot.

Huh? Sometimes people talk about their real life on their blog. And for some people that includes mental illness. I don't bring it up that often, but occasionally I've talked about my depression on my Tumblr when I've been particularly struggling.

Nah. You might be right or you might be wrong. I'm realizing is a generational thing. Remember when people one deviantart claimed to have asperger and in some cases it turned out to be not true? And then people mocked them for it because they used to use it as an excuse to be complete assholes? Yeah.

My dashboard has a few people who seem genuinely mentally ill to me. I follow a couple of semi-recovered anorexics, & someone who may or may not have borderline personality disorder.

In a some cases it's mixed up with general young adult anxiety or physical problems, but yeah, it's sometimes very real.

I do think most of the time, they don't really have any illness. I know not everyone thinks like me, but I'd feel pretty embarrassed to flaunt any of my illnesses, mental or physical, so I find it pretty disrespectful/annoying when kids wave around their mental illness flags to claim they're privileged to this or people shouldn't do that.

I've been officially diagnosed with Asperger's and clinical depression a few years ago, but I make a point of never ever setting foot on Tumblr and I regret having disclosed it once on my DW - I was so relieved to finally know what exactly was wrong with me, to put a word on it that I wanted to trust my friends with it... in retrospect only do I think now I should have kept it a secret after all.

Re: I don't believe in Tumblr mental illness.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it depends on the disorder. If they're saying they have anxiety/depression, I'll believe them 100%. If they're saying they have their favourite fandom's fictional characters living in their head, I probably won't.

Aside from that, it depends pretty heavily on how they talk about? Like, if they try to "flaunt" or even fetishize it, I probably won't think they're being sincere.

Re: I don't believe in Tumblr mental illness.

Right, sure, because depression is so super rare in 15-25-year-olds. Surely they're lying!!!
Or you're an idiot. Alternative theory.

Well, one thing to remember is that people with mental illness are not likely to talk about it in real life, due to the stigma. The internet offers anonymous interaction. And along those lines, people who's mental illness makes social interaction difficult while find the internet to be a good place to talk to people and will naturally gravitate there.

Impossible to tell who has a genuine problem and who doesn't.

Teenagers are always looking for ways to be special. It seems weird that this generation have opted for grabbing as many labels as they can for themselves.

Frankly I'm going to believe someone when they say they have a mental illness, just because some people make it up doesn't mean that they all do and I am certainly not qualified to be able to make that distinction.

Statistically speaking, some of them must have some kind of mental illness. However, I tend to give them benefit of the doubt or not based on how they describe themselves. If it matches the actual medical community's description of a mental illness and/or they mention an actual diagnosis/medication which they have been prescribed, I will give them more benefit of doubt than someone whose description sounds like someone whose entire knowledge of mental illness comes from tumblr itself, or who outright states that they are self-diagnosed.

Re: I don't believe in Tumblr mental illness.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right that some people who claim to have various conditions may lack an official diagnosis, but overall this doesn't make any sense. People with mental illnesses blog, too, you know.

Re: I don't believe in Tumblr mental illness.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I simply think there's too much evidence to the contrary. I know a number of my tumblr friends in real life and all of them have the illnesses/disorders they write about on their blogs, complete with diagnoses from doctors. There definitely are people out there lying about having mental illness, or more likely have self-diagnosed themselves based on an extremely limited understanding of the illness/disorder in question. But on the whole I'm inclined to believe a person when they say they have X.

Re: I don't believe in Tumblr mental illness.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I think that if anyone posts on the Internet about their "disorder", they don't have it.

So I don't have depression, anxiety and bipolar because I... Talk about them online? Didn't know I didn't exist!
