Are they problematic?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to ask about a specific person, but actually I think that other people might also want to know about other people, so here we have this thread.

I was listening to a radio interview today with Brian Blessed and I was just thinking "Man what a cool old.. erm white... male... Oh dear" and I started to get quite worried about if it's actually ok to be a fan of his. I'm not saying being an old white male is bad, but some, hell most of them had done horrible shit or said horrible shit or believe horrible shit so:

Can anyone tell me if Brian Blessed has ever raped anyone, harmed a PoC, Said anything sexist, racist, homophobic or transphobic, Done, said, or been any kind of socially regressive douche? I'm hoping that the answer is "No" but if he's secretly a piece of shit I'd rather know.

And If anyone else has anyone they'd like to ask this corner of the internet about, this would be the thread to do it.

No, most have not. The vast majority of any group are completely average, friendly, polite, law abiding citizens.

Re: Are they problematic?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear me

If you'd like to argue that there should be a blanket presumption of problematicness for old white men in general, you should probably advance that proposition instead of picking an old white man at random to use as a test case

Re: Are they problematic?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really, but come on, the guy grew up in a world that was dark and ignorant compared to the world we live in now. He group up in the type of life chock full of benefits that are still being deprived for people today. It's not unreasonable to suspect he might have been tainted by that.

And for the record, I'm not picking an old white man at random. I realised today I am a fan of a particular old white man, and then started to think about all the old white men who have let me down, and I really want to know that THIS old while man has not yet let me down.

So ... do you go around asking new acquaintances whether or not they're problematic too?

OP Here

Ok, I didn't think I said anything objectionable, so is this just run of the mill internet douchery or can someone tell me what I did wrong? Why wanting to know if a person I like and respect is actually worthy or my liking them and respecting them is such a troll move?

Re: Are they problematic?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Run-of-the-mill online douche-baggery I'm afraid. It's a new trick the trolls here have learned. If they call everyone a troll and they can troll with immunity.

Re: Are they problematic?

You basically said that because he is an older, white guy he has obviously done something racist or raped someone or whatever -ist is the flavor of the month.

Re: Are they problematic?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Short version: your post plays into a bunch of narratives about social justice and how we approach celebrity that tend to lead to really involved, vicious arguments and fights.

Longer version: I think there are basically two problems with your post. First, it treats problematic things in a really weird way - like a weird insidious darkness or sin that corrupts everything it touches, which comes from bad institutions and views, and which we have learned how to purify ourselves from, and that when someone has done something problematic that's it they're done they're evil - which I think is a weird approach and not one that ultimately makes a lot of sense in human terms. And that fundamentalism tends to lead to arguments and stupid conclusions and it's really black and white in a way that's wrong.

Second, I think, it's kind of hard to understand why if you really were concerned about Brian Blessed's life, you wouldn't just... google Brian Blessed (or, like, 'Brian Blessed politics' or something). So it's easy to look at that part of your post and come to the conclusion that you're not really interested in finding out about Brian Blessed - because there's easier ways to do that - and that you're more interested in stupid arguments about politics on fandom secrets dot dreamwidth dot org.

Hope that helps.

Okay so I read the comments to this before I read this post and thought "Oh, just FS being FS"...and then I actually read this.

"can someone tell me if this man has raped someone " ...... Uh. The entire thing is kind of a super hard open.

Personally, I go "Well, here's a white guy I like. They're probably problematic, I have no doubt about it, but we'll cross that road when we get to it and hope it isn't too bad."

In the future, you might want to just, I dunno, google the guy? Try googling "Brian Blessed" scandal. Not only would this solve your problem without getting you dogpiled on the internet, but you actually get to decide whether any hits you get on your search are from reputable sources or just trash.

Re: Are they problematic?

I don't think that you will ever find anyone who has never said or done anything problematic. The best you can do is decide wether or not it's worth staying on.

literally everyone is problematic to some degree (and if you claim that you've never said or thought something offensive then I'm going to go ahead and assume that you're lying to everyone and/or yourself) so I'm guessing that Brian Blessed is not an exception here. I'm reasonably sure he's not a rapist though.
