18. I... never really saw the appeal of that. Tony took advantage of Maxxie when he was drunk, and then Michelle made Maxxie feel guilty about it and publicly apologize when it wasn't even his fault.

I just really don't see why anyone could otp a relationship based on manipulation.

23. TRUE FACTS. I love his voice. I wish I had more by him, but everything he says is automatically amazing in my eyes.

49. That's kind of how I feel about it, too. (With the exception of not being near her age at all.) I read the first one, barely remembered it as more than mindless cheese. I tried reading the second one and couldn't get through ten pages - it read like terrible fanfiction. The deleterians would have sporked the shit out of that mess. But I'm forcing myself to read all three, just because I like to be informed when I tell people why I hate their fandoms. (Wow, that sounded a lot meaner than it really is, lol).

Sadly, I feel that mary-sue characters will ALWAYS be more popular than characters with real originality. Because no one fangirls like the 11-18 age range that kind of character tends to attract. Have you seen this (http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.twilightmoms.com%2F&ei=AqACSOjHBoS-wQH_yZH7CA&usg=AFQjCNFusvd9ECzoSGbnRyN_WBrtZ8QiFA&sig2=no9i5e1Ii6CiGlPt5D_szA)? That's more depressing to me than the countless friends I have interested in the books. They, at least, might grow out of it one day...

49

[identity profile] ether-bunny.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Also, LOL at the amount of "ur jus jeluz" responses to your secret. Guess what guys? Sometimes books legitimately suck. The characterizations are shallow, the prose is often painfully purple, and the technical aspect of the writing is not particularly great either. Let's have a look, shall we? From the second book, since I have it on my computer.

"When I pulled it out, I gasped aloud. Edward looked just as beautiful as he did in real life, staring at me out of the picture with the warm eyes I'd missed for the past few days. It was almost uncanny that anyone could look so . . . so . . . beyond description. No thousand words could equal this picture." (p 65)

""I'm no good for you, Bella."
"Don't be ridiculous." I wanted to sound angry, but it just sounded like I was begging. "You're the very best part of my life."" (p 69)

"There was a light, unnatural breeze. My eyes flashed open. The leaves on a small vine maple shuddered with the gentle wind of his passage.

He was gone.

With shaky legs, ignoring the fact that my action was useless, I followed him into the forest. The evidence of his path had disappeared instantly. There were no footprints, the leaves were still again, but I walked forward without thinking. I could not do anything else. I had to keep moving. If I stopped looking for him, it was over.

Love, life, meaning . . . over." (p 73)

"The babble ceased, and then picked up again with more intensity. A confusing swirl of faces moved over me. Sam's voice was the only one that -nade sense in the chaos, perhaps because my ear was against his chest.

"No, I don't think she's hurt,' he told someone. "She just keeps saying 'He's gone.'"

Was I saying that out loud? I bit down on my lip." (p 76)

"I was like a lost moon—my planet destroyed in some cataclysmic, disaster-movie scenario of desolation—that continued, nevertheless, to circle in a tight little orbit around the empty space left behind, ignoring the laws of gravity." (p 201)

LoL RIGHT. Jealousy, that's it.

07. Ah, that brings back fond memories of the Fruits Basket shit-storm of years ago.

49. It's probably because it has sparkly vampires and Mary Sues that it got chosen to be made into a movie, since it'll be more likely to make money.

50. Y halo thar, Trolly McTrollson!

69. I wonder if there'll ever be any Sandman or Discworld secrets; Good Omens is great, but the two of them have done a lot more than just that.

Um, it's not REALLY Sakura's fault that she's useless throughout the first arc. She was unfortunate enough to be stuck on the same team as two of the most frighteningly powerful genin in quite a long time, one of them being her crush. She wasn't going to try to outshine him for fear of dislike.
She's fucking awesome, dude. She's strong emotionally and physically, she doesn't take anybody's shit, she keeps Naruto grounded, and she's a sweet girl. (When she's not beating him up).

So, okay, you like those other characters. That's cool. But maybe people legitimately LIKE Sakura :| (gasp! what a concept!)

Re: 42

I don't really watch Naruto, but I think secrets like 42 are great because they bring fans of Sakura out of the woodworks, and the character ends up with more love than if the secret was supportive of her.

38 - You are so awesome. I was beginning to worry I was the only one who lusts after him like a sicko. A couple years ago I stumbled across a promotional photo of him standing over a woman's prone body on the ground. I think the intention of the photo was to make you think he had kill her because I believe the woman was Kylie Minogue and it was a promo image for Murder Ballads. I looked for it so I could link it here, but apparently I've lost it. Dammit. I just spent twenty minutes frantically using search engines to find it, but no luck.

42. Agreed. So many other more kickass characters that define the typical female role.

66. ROFLAO. If there was fic, i'd read that. XD Shoot I'd even write it if I had the time. But to make it plausable, would John have been matrixed all this time? Or would he survive the machine wars and either got himself attached so he can live in the fake world or been part of the freedom colony and rename himself whenever it was destroyed and restarted? Damn it.... Now I'm musing about it. XD

42. Guess what? I like her more than ALL of them. Because she's had better development than any other character in the series, I love how she manages to be strong and human, she worked hard to get where she is, she learned how to make her emotions her strength, and I don't think girls are "useless" just because they cry and weren't born a fighter.

(Seriously though, what the fuck? SHE CAN PUNCH THROUGH STEEL, AND SHE STILL HAS ICKY GIRL COOTIES? :| Fanbrats, never change.)

31. GAHH it's such a pretty secret!! ILU. :DDDD I understand your pain- man, I wouldn't want to be in that person's shoes right now...

But what's not to love about that epic OT3?

42. LOL, you're getting a lot of comments huh. It's just that your secret makes people...annoyed. (Most, anyway) SAKURA IS FREAKING AWESOME. I will like her forever and ever, and I didn't even like her in the beginning! Sakura is not useless at all and neither is Hinata. They're both awesome and strong. People do like Sakura for who she is you know, and not because she's female and a ninja. (Which could also be applied to Hinata, seeing how she's also female. And a ninja)And a question- if Sakura doesn't contribute to the plot, how does Hinata?

The great thing about Sakura is that she's human. Normal. Not special. She doesn't have any special abilities and she doesn't come from a special clan. She's stuck in a team with Naruto and Sasuke which isn't that great for her. Of course she's going to appear useless against Naruto and Sasuke. It's Naruto and Sasuke.

But Sakura wants to be stronger, and she tries. Did you not read/see the 'cutting of my hair' or 'I want to catch up to their back and protect them' or 'Tsunade, teach me' scenes and there are more, but this is a long reply anyway. Don't Sakura and Hinata have the same sort of desire? They both want to be stronger.

...Man, that was long. Yay for kunoichi love!

63- The fact that people dislike Franziska but worship a dull, flat, underdeveloped character like Klavier (who happens to be a HAWT GUY who can be paired with another guy for BUTTSEX) makes me DESPAIR and just reinforces the idea that the majority of fandom is misogynistic.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, uh, this is prime wank bait.

Personally, I agree on the loving Franziska (and thinking she gets a bad rap) while not being too fond of Klavier (and thinking he's 'flat' and 'underdeveloped,') yes...

...but, uh, maybe it's just me, but I don't quite see how the two are related to each other, or how liking one/disliking the other = misogyny. I mean it isn't like, say, Klavier had Franziska's personality and people liked him and hated her; then you'd have a point. They're completely different characters, though so... this just feels like a wholly strawman argument. :/

65. He does look good there, doesn't he? I personally prefer Kuro (or R!Syao, but he's got Sakura), but I.G. did a good job with Fai in that arc.

TB!3: I...actually felt really bad for both of them. I'll admit that I started out as a KF fangirl and was interested SOLELY in them (and I still get a little bit excited about KF interaction), but solely in regards to the manga I'm taking an interest in ALL of them.

Seriously, my chest hurt when C!Sakura died. One of the best moments in ANY manga I have EVER read in the history of my reading manga.

36. It seems to me that out of all types of animes, shonens tend to be the most common victim of slash, and this series is no exception. I dislike noncanon pairings because they'll never happen, so I see no point in "shipping" them. And I never understood why people DO ship them. I just like whatever's canon. :] It's so much better! (at least *I* think it is.)

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, they could happen after canon ends! Anything is possible! Well, almost.

Personally I see no point in shipping canon pairings. I mean, they already happen in canon! One can either like or dislike them, but they're there. You can't discuss/write/draw how they became a couple, their dynamics as one, or similar, because it's already there in canon. There nothing one can do with it, if you know what I mean.

41. YOU. ARE. AWESOME! AGREED 110%.

47. Man, Disney songs just sound better in other languages. I've seen a few clips of songs sung in Russian and German and they sounded absolutely amazing compared to the English versions. Multi-lingual Disney FTW!

49. AGREED. Sadly though, it seems half-baked vampire angst is the "in" thing these days (it's the only reason I can come up with not only for Underworld, but for Underworld getting a sequel), so I guess as long as a book has that, it's guaranteed to be published. =/

[identity profile] quaedam.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
44. Honestly, 75 percent of the attraction of the bakeneko arc/Mononoke is the awesome, awesome, awesome visual style. (And not even just all the crazy patterns and the old-fashioned look and the great character designs--also the way the camera moves around and the ungodly weird imagery) I found the stories interesting too (though I wasn't sure half the time exactly what was going on, I just knew that the stuff going by on the screen was beautiful and so I was happy), and liked the characters, but above all it's really the art and the way the art makes those stories and those characters work that's exceptional and memorable. The other two stories in Ayakashi were much more plot-driven.

56. AHAHAHAHAHA OH JESUS, Legend. That story and that character did such strange things to my subconscious as a small child. That is to say, IAWTS.
