16. I kind of agree and disagree with you. On one hand, m/m sex is in no way superior to any other form of sex, you really can't call yourself a lesbian if you have no interest in women RL (which is what I'm assuming you meant by the 'eating pussy' comment) and that being a non-virgin doesn't automatically make you a slut that needs to have her geek license revoked. But on the other hand, fandom is probably the safest place to explore the idea of what if you were a gay man, or a lesbian, or whatever without having to actually do it in RL and risk possible societal consequences for it.

I don't think it's so much suppression so much as...blurring a line between fantasy and reality, perhaps? I know that I find fictional males attractive, but I also know that the idea of getting it on with any guy in RL just grosses me out. Some people may be the same way, but they haven't quite figured out where that line between fantasy and reality is for them. Either way, fandom is probably the safest place for them to discover that line. Ultimately, it's up to them to find it and trying to define anyone else's sexuality for them probably hurts more than anything else.

I do agree with your point that lipstick lesbians are kind of obnoxious (having fallen prey to a cut-throat golddigger of a lipstick lesbian, I can very well see where you're coming from), as are all the other fanteenies out there proclaiming the sexuality of the month because it's cool right now in fandom!

On the other hand, it's always incredibly murky to try and define which of these is which - it's not always so easy to tell a lipstick lesbian from the real thing (unless, of course, you've had the pleasure to meet an outspoken, militant, box-loving lesbian, which is probably one of the most wonderful and hilarious things that's ever happened to me in my life) from a FTM transsexual! And really, unless someone is incredibly, blindingly fake, it's probably always best to personally give them the benefit of the doubt.

Basically, I think the point you're trying to make is that in essence, being fake about your sexuality for the sake of others is ALWAYS Not Cool. I just think you need to express it a little better.

It feels like for every person who is comfortable with their sexuality and its relative flexibility – I've known lots of older women in fandom who are straight+married yet willing to talk about how they find female characters really, really sexy – there are two who are completely hidebound/screwey. 61. I love love love Honeydew Syndrome as well as both Metis and Josh, but I have to agree that Metis was a complete asswipe and I was supremely pissed at how Josh completely bent to his will ALL THE TIME when he was PERFECTLY in the right.

But, I have to disagree with your point, since I think one of the major points of the comic is to defy the stereotypes. We're SUPPOSED to see that Metis is imperfect, HE'S the one who's the ass, HE'S the one dishing out stereotypes when it is stereotypically the "jock" who would be the prejudice asshole. However in this comic, Josh is the kinder one, he's hella more forgiving and even though he fits the failure-at-schoolwork stereotype he doesn't act like a blithering idiot. So, I think what you said about Metis being the ass was intentional on the author's part and actually helps change up what would be a classic emo-meets-jock story. =x
