ELEVEN, THIRTY-SEVEN

11. Whatever it is, it looks cute.

37. It's weird how that kind of language can simultaniously help you understand the world and yet hamstring you from being able to express yourself at the same time (lest you offend). I feel similarly.

28. Weird, Schindler's List always makes me sob. But Hirano's nazi girls made me feel guilty as hell over how sexy they are. Captain too.

37. Don't feel bad! There's even a growing movement towards scholarly writing about fandom!! You could write about Utena and get published probably! I'm working on a paper for a certain ridiculously popular Japanese RPG from a feminist perspective with the intention of publishing it. Write what you love, they told me... That was a bad idea.

45. Speaking of writing what you love... You should totally do it. I saw a version of R&GrD that had epic H/Hr-ness at the end and I'm hoping the company does Hamlet soon, because... H/Hr is pretty much the best ship in the Shakespeare canon.

I also wrote a paper once on how Horatio's finishing the iambs in Hamlet's lines proves they were Totally Doing It.

Oooh, which RPG? Will it be readable online? I am always interested in feminist perspectives on nerdy stuff.

21.) I love Tactics but hate the anime. They bastardized it to high hell. But I adore Haruka/Kantaro. ;w; That scene is gorgeous, though I have no idea what's going on. It makes me want to actually take out my DVDs and attempt to get through the rest of the anime.

24.) Oh God Sumomo that'd be AWESOME.

52.) P-Pretty much here too. But not on a personal, "IRL" level. My brain, however, now she's a fucking slut.

59.) I don't think it holds the show back, but I will agree his acting needs some tweaking.

Re: 21, 24, 52, 59

(Anonymous) 2008-04-30 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
21. I think the anime is beautiful in itself... but really, everything in it was dedicated to developing Harukan... which works really well. The whole thing felt meh until the last episode, then it just came together... It's nothing compared to the manga, of course, but it's still beautiful...

If anything, just watch the final episodes - 24-25, I think. Those were just... ♥!

05. Yeah, I've noticed that "atypical" secrets tend to get less of a response too. Of course, I'm probably as responsible for that as anyone else here, so...

31. I know the feeling. It really is depressing once you get to be older than most of the protagonists of fantasy and science fiction and whatnot who get to go on cool adventures.

37. I don't know, I think Utena particularly lends itself to that kind of thing.

too big 1: Unfortunately, there's no "check characterization" button.

37

[identity profile] daniela-lynx.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
*Sigh* I dislike the way feminazis make the rest of us look /that/ bad.

Come on! :D I'd love to discuss gender theory with you! And based in Utena, even. (I loved that show). I'm still kind of a n00b when it comes to gender theory, so I bet I could learn a lot from you, and other people too.

It's /Utena Fandom/. I don't think anybody would look at you with disgust or boredom if you tried to start an interesting conversation.

Re: 37

(Anonymous) 2008-05-01 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, thanks. I don't know that I'd be that much help on gender theory since I'm only just now starting to learn about it myself, but I'm really interested to start a discussion on it with other people.

And yeah, I guess the fandom would be more receptive to it than I'd been thinking. I'd mentioned some of my analysis theories to some friends in the past (not even getting into the gender theory stuff, just things I'd observed on my own), and was told in essence to stop overhtinking everything and sometimes the writers/director put things in just for the sake of being weird. Since our opinions on other sibjects, including feminism, were often in sync, it made me doubt myself, despite the fact that I still believed the symbolism was there for a reason. In short, I am a bad feminist. ;)

[identity profile] ether-bunny.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
34. Oddly, despite that I am active in the HP fandom and have never been involved in any fandom related to the Redwall books (and it's been ages since I read them, though I've been meaning to re-read), I really think that I had a lot more empathy for the majority of his characters than I ever will for the majority of JKR's characters.

I also kind of feel like Sirius' popularity is largely in part of the influence of fandom, given that he has so little 'screen-time' in the actual books. Things like Shoebox Project, and any other fanfiction/fanart out there (I don't like him that much so I don't know what the big fandom things for Sirius would be) create a sense of Sirius that I didn't think was fully realized in the books. If you think about it, he's really barely there. I personally feel like we don't really know him at all in canon, except for his quickly unraveling sanity in books 4 & 5, and we have maybe... what, one scene where we see him as a young man? Two, I guess, in which he is still sane and could potentially inspire some sort of good feeling or attachment in the reader, but since both scenes are provided by Severus Snape, neither of them are at all complimentary to him. So, I get a bit irritated with that kind of thing too, since compared to other major characters in the series we hardly see Sirius at all. You may as well cry over Colin Creevey's death. To me, I thought Sirius' presence was unfulfilled, if that makes sense. I don't think that, as a character, he achieved much - his only importance to the plot is to be important to Harry, but he's killed off before he truly gets to experience or fulfill that, it seemed almost like he was there just as a means for Harry to angst more. While he had the potential to be very interesting, I never felt that there was enough about him in the books that was actually positive for me to care what happened to him. I didn't cry for his death, but I did feel very sorry for Harry in the aftermath of it.

Wow, sorry to ramble.

[identity profile] beckaandzac.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't fandom supposed to be all about the unrealized potential of canon characters though? Giving them a life they never got to have in canon? Sirius is most notable in Harry's (our PoV character) life as an absence, and that absence may affect us in the way it affects Harry, and we want to fill it in, the way that Harry wants to find every possible scrap of information about his parents' past. It's the fact that they're not there that makes us want more. I just don't see anything wrong with that, or even anything terribly unusual.

And this total stranger thought your ramble was interesting. :)
