Thank you! I could even see best!friend!fic where they just spent the entire time making fun of Don.

Oh gosh yes! That's actually why I started shipping it. After the flop-film, when Cosmo starts picking on Don, and he just gives a quick gesture, and Kathy falls right into step with him. Two of a kind! That kind of thing is so much sexier to me than romantic setting and sweet words.

Still, best!friend!fic is always fantastic!

37. I read an essay by Laura Mulvey some years ago, and I thought it sucked. I couldn't take this Freudian stuff seriously. Still can't.
That's all so theoretical, out there, and I cannot relate to it in the least. Feminism is great, and gender roles in entertainment media are definitely somethign to keep a critical eye on, but can we please do it without going on about casttration complex and penis envy?

58. He should have died at the end of S1. :/ You are right it's risking to get ridiculous. But S1 death would have been better than S2 death. Which sucks to admit because his fans have started going on my nerves so much I'd really like them to go away.

I don't think it's necessary to agree with the theory, but simply being aware of it and thinking about it can produce very interesting things. Mulvey's first article using psychoanalysis to talk about film is very dense and difficult to understand (we've been discussing it for two weeks in my class and parts are still challenging), but I'm glad I was exposed to it, even if I'm not certain I agree with everything in it.

It was also the first time anyone had used psychoanalysis in application to film, particularly in how the medium affected the audience, which is now a widely-used practice in film review. So, like Freud, I think it's important to be exposed to it, even if you don't necessarily agree with it.

Like others have said, you really can't go wrong in the Utena fandom with serious topics like you're bringing up. I'm thinking attending a pop culture conference next year and doing a presentation on how Utena can fall into the realm of magic realism (which would include some feminist interpretation). I feel like my biggest yuri ships are dismissed by fans of them in a het pairing. I'm not saying I don't like het, because I do. But come on guys, where's the yuri love?

It's even worse when I find a yuri com for a certain fandom and it's dead.

People in the KKM fandom tend to make the assumption that if you like Wolfram that you like Yuuram and hate Conrad, and that if you like Conrad that you like Con/Yuu and hate Wolfram. To not dislike one or the other is something of an anomaly. I happen to like both, but yeah. There's a metric tonne of pairing related crap in KKM fandom, mostly surrounding those three characters.

These are insults invented by and used by feminism's enemies. Thanks. I'm learning how to do that, but I have to say, the dismissals from women are the hardest for me to stand up to because I'm always wondering if they're being more sensible than I am. I = bad feminist at times.

Actually, the term "Mary Sue" doesn't mean a self-insert. The whole thing start back in the 70s with a parody of Star Trek fanfiction that was meant to mock the wish fulfillment characters people were inserting in to it. A Mary Sue is a character that is loved by the rest of the characters for absolutely no reason, and is normally unrealistically built to be either completely perfect or just right for some wanktastic angst. (And classically, gets to kick the ass of the author's least favorite character and sleep with or be BFF with the author's favorite character.) That sort of bride at every wedding, corpse at every funeral thing. So a self-insertion can be a Mary Sue, but not all self-inserts are.

That said, no clue what the whole comm is about. However, considering the term "Mary Sue" was coined specifically for fanfiction, I'd be hesitant to call a canon character a Mary Sue. I'd just call it shitty writing and leave it at that.

I agree, a canon character can be overly-perfect, poorly written and unrealistic –but they still aren’t a Mary Sue.

37 - I would read the FUCK out of any essay you wrote on the subject. I wouldn't necessarily have anything interesting to say back because, well, I know jackshit about feminist film theory, but it'd be awesome to intellectually engage with the series on that level.
