The thing is, BC has everything going for him. He's widely regarded as a good actor, he's landing high-profile acting gigs left and right, he's incredibly rich, he's married to a beautiful woman, magazines want to put him on their covers and talk about him being a sex symbol, and he has legions of fans out there who think he's the best things since sliced bread.

If someone has all of that going for them and they still feel hurt by some very lighthearted jokes about their peculiar name...they really need to work on their issues with insecurity and their irrational feelings of persecution.

His situation is very different from yours, OP.

I'm sorry it upsets you OP but please keep in mind that no one is actively bullying Benedict and there's a difference between poking fun at someone who is above you and poking fun at someone who is at your level or below. Or basically there's a difference between what people are doing with his name and how you were treated.

The joke is just so old at this point, I find it cringey. And while it's hard to feel too bad for a rich, successful celebrity who doesn't indicate any personal offense at the ribbing, it is a little weird to go so far into making fun of someone's name.

Yikes @ everyone missing the point of the secret. It's not about BC's hurt feefees. It's about how so many people making fun of his name sends the message to the OP that there really are that many people who would very likely have made fun of the OP's name too. It rubs in how widely acceptable making fun of names is, and you're stupid if you think most people making fun of his name are only doing it to him because he's white and upper class and would never, ever do it to anyone else who might not be as privileged as him. I've seen discussions where people used "But I make fun of Benedict Cumberbatch's name too!!!!!!" to excuse themselves for making fun of other names in a racist way.

My maiden name was twice as bad as BigBadBeetleBorg CrashBandicoot AND it's Scottish AND I'm a pale ass ginger, which means I got shit three times as bad. I didn't have his millions to wipe my tears away with and I did just fine, so I'm sure he is, too.

And then I married a French Canadian and got a new last name no knew can spell.
