Review/Analysis of DS9's "Rivals"

The episode is fun enough, but the REAL action of the review comes at the end, where I rip into various costumes in my attempt to prove that the 24th century has the fashion sense of cement.

Favorite houseplant?

I think mine is the jade plant. They're not as flashy as some, but easier to keep alive.

Bamboo, though I can't get one to live more than two years. Bamboo tips?

I have a soft spot for pitcher plants because I had a friend who had a lovely one.

Surprisingly, I do very well with phalaenopsis orchids. They love a sunny south-facing window, weekly watering, and some fertilizer every couple months. I always thought orchids were hard to grow but mine seem to thrive on just a little care!

None for me because I always end up killing my poor houseplants, but my mom loves bamboo.

That I myself have? I have a tiny studio with one window that faces pretty close to another building. The only sunlight we get is really when it reflects off of a glassy neighboring building, so I need plants with strong mental constitution. or whatever.

I have a bonsai tree I like that I was sure I killed but somehow it's still alive, though I found out much later that "bonsai" isn't a type of plant, it's the art of maintaining the plan, so really I have a mini-tree and I have no idea what kind it is. (It was sold as a bonsai tree, though it's got fat deciduous leaves and a pretty thick trunk) I also have an aloe vera plant which I love because ~home medicine~ and I have another one my mom gave me and I forgot what its called. del...phinium? something like that? It's really boring looking.

I want pretty flowering plants, but I think those need more sunlight.

I have tried so many times to keep a jade plant alive but no go. I love them. They are just so cool. I like aloe plants too - multipurpose plant! - but again, can't keep 'em alive. :(

Spider plants are fun just because they're so easy and the mulitply like mad, so you can have a whole jungle of them in a relatively short time!

Christmas Cactus. They're so easy to keep alive and they bloom gorgeously in the fall/winter. I keep getting tempted by some dark gold blooming ones on ebay.

I have two heart-leaf philodendrons, one wandering jew, two bromeliads, and one...plant of indeterminate classification that are the hardiest goddamn houseplants I ever did see. They have a stronger will to live than I have. I have forgotten to water them for 4+ weeks at a time, multiple times, and they are still growing strong. It is ridiculous.

Venting

(Anonymous) 2017-04-18 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[Feel free to add your own vent/rant.]

Is there a phrase more frustrating to hear than “it takes time”?

How fucking long am I supposed to wait to see a positive result of anything I do? Why are the only things worth doing things that take years and years before you can reap any benefits? Why can shitty things happen to me even minute, but good things take years and years?

I think those are the questions that rest at the heart of my struggles with my mental illnesses. Recovery is working your ass off every day, and sometimes still feeling like shit and wanting to give up and die. Recovery is trying out five or ten medications before finding the right combination, which can take months or years. And during all of it, people are still expecting you to work or go to school or play sports and have hobbies on top of having a social life and being involved with your family. Often these expectations come at you all at the same time, all the while you’re asking yourself why you’re even alive.

Simply existing can be exhausting. I work a few hours a week, I take classes once or twice a week, and I do chores around the house as needed. I have basically no responsibilities, and I’m exhausted. The idea of being alive for another 60-80 years is exhausting just to think about!

I feel like high school and college spent so much time getting me worked about school and only school that I never learned how to look at the big picture of life. I was never taught to plan for my future past the age of 22. So now I’m a 24 year old drop out with no plans. Whenever I think ahead to what may come, I see a black wall of nothing. An impenetrable darkness.

All I know for sure is that debt and taxes and bills are lurking somewhere in that darkness. Somewhere very close and very large. And I know I have to make money to stay alive. But for what? What am I living for? And why?

The hardest questions that I always ask myself are: What is the point of it all? Why am I working so hard? Why am I bothering?

I just bought a new TV and its so pretty! But I can't figure out how to make the display settings stay. I like a bright TV, so I set it nice and bright, fired up the Xbox and got half a level into a game of Peggle before it darkened all up again.
