I got into an awkward discussion with a distant cousin at a family reunion type event that started with them talking about another one of our distant family members who's actually much younger behaving in ways that the cousin found 'shameful' (it was really something fucking harmless tbh) and embarrassing in their opinion.

And now I'm debating with this person about why people who bug them don't deserve to be "taught better" through making fun of them until they change. This just seems something so basic but no matter how many times I've gone round with them they don't seem to see why they don't have some right to change every person who irritates them. Even if I try the "how would you like it?" route, which they seem to think is irrelevant. And now I kind of dread seeing them tomorrow

Why do some people think like this?

Is anyone else having issues with Youtube? For the past couple days, when I've tried to watch my Watch Later list, it will either say video not available for every video or will load one but not show the list and not let me move to the next on the list.

book club - August recs/announcements

Hi guys! Thanks to those who participated in our discussion yesterday for Joust!

It's time for some brief announcements and to kick off recs for August.

We are changing up rec procedures again after lots of feedback. New rules:

-one rec per person
-two-month cooldown - that is, you cannot rec for August any book that was recced and lost in July or June. May and earlier are fair game.

Other rules still in place:

-cap at first 15 recs
-to be accepted, a rec MUST have the title, author, and a link to Amazon or Goodreads!!!!
-troll recs (such as books that are not reasonably easy to obtain or books that are not actually novels) will not be accepted

If that was the case, it sounds really vicious. I am against bullying and threats of any kind. I speak admittedly only from anecdotal evidence, but some sporking communities I hung around had rules against attacking the authors directly. I remember a few instances where trolls who reviewed paraphrasing the sporkings were called out in the communities themselves.

It's just... fics are public media, and I find subjecting them to criticism is innocuous. Threats or bullying are not, of course, but as long as the sporking was kept to the forums I find it fair game.
