I didn't start reading the Harry Potter books until 2004 for this very reason--if something is that popular, it's usually shit. In that particular case, I was wrong (which is nice, on occasion).

I've read both The Da Vinci Code and Twilight, just to see if they were as bad as I expected them to be. The Da Vinci Code truly was godawful; Stephen Fry described it as "arse gravy of the worst kind," and he was right.

But Twilight? Holy shit--it's even worse. I never thought I'd read anything more illogical, empty-headed, and devoid of merit than The Da Vinci Code, but there it is.

ETA: I do, however, recommend reading both books (or at least Twilight) if you're an aspiring author who worries that you'll never be good enough to get published. They're both motivational in the "If that shit can get published, I know my book can!" sense.
