I hate that it was datamined too but for a different reason. because it's a bitter reminder how every time someone tries to do something about the lack of LGBT representation in media, what they create is shut down by something dug up in their past, or a few people come up with a reason the creator is bad and it spreads all over tumblr in days because there's a bunch of lemmings who will spread it without questioning it.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but datamining doesn't mean what you think it means. It's hacking the code of the game so you can find all the easter eggs and other hidden parts.

nayrt but I think what they were getting at is that a lot of people took the datamined 'dark ending' and hyped it up as an example of how awful the creators were and how you shouldn't support the game because it was Problematic and Gross.

They took "spooky Halloween DLC" and twisted it into "omg the Game Grumps HATE GAYS".

No, I think they have it right. This ending was datamined and publicized and then some people thought this ending was a horrible thing and that went all over tumblr, which disappointed some other people who thought the game was good LGBT representation.

I haven't played the game yet, but re: representation I was a bit more concerned by what I read about Joseph's canon endings than I was by the goofy cult ending. Leaving an unhappy marriage is a romance staple, so it was weird to read developer comments calling it "morally dubious and bad" to wish for an ending where he and his wife decide to break things off before they hurt each other any more.

Just reading statements they've released, it almost seems like they have no love for the genre, and just wanted to make a "wholesome" game that stuck it to all those problematic games that icky fujoshi like to play.

Where did they say it was morally dubious and bad to want an ending where Joseph and Mary breaks up? The only thing I read was how they said 'saying the right things to a person in the hopes of smooching them is what psychopaths do'. Which I guess is fair enough. That and they wanted to have a dating game where the endgame is not always one where you end up with the character you tried to pursue.

As someone who do play those problematic games that icky fujoshi like to play (and also let's not forget that otome games also exist and some of them are just as wild as those 'yaoi' ones) I did enjoy what Dream Daddy was trying to say, but it didn't take one iota of my joy in playing other games like DMMD. The DDaDDS team seem to be pushing the box on this one, with what they think is a 'realistic' portrayal of how relationships work' and it's simply a difference in what you want to see in your games.

'Realism' seems to be a keyword they're working with here, and how Joseph isn't going to suddenly turn around and break up with his wife (and vice versa) when they're both steeped in the tradition of religion and Christianity. It simply happens.

(That said though, Joseph's cult ending was classic over the top dating sim scenario. That and I wish I can just date both Joseph and Mary somehow.)

That sociopath comment (along with the one about how people who want Joseph and Mary to get divorced are "villainizing" Mary... as if it benefits her to remain trapped in a miserable marriage to a cheater) was one of the things that made me feel like at least some of the developers have a disdain for the genre. It seemed absurd to me that someone who just released a dating sim would get up on their high horse about silly small-minded players expecting that they will be able to date everyone in a dating sim. Adding realism and subverting player expectations is one thing, but you can do that without smugly punishing players for their expectations. Never mind that nothing about the marketing (which was pretty much puns, dad jokes, and 'lol the player character is your dadsona!!' jokes) implies that the game will be a thoughtful, realistic take on dating sims.

As I said, I haven't played the game (though I was considering picking it up if it goes on sale and/or gets good DLC) and I have little interest in dating sims in general, so I have little knowledge here. What that creator said just really rubbed me the wrong way.

What actually happened in this ending? And what kind of fic is there that its in?

Said ending reveals that one of the characters is a cult leader who has been manipulating the relationships of the characters to appease a some sort of elder god.
The ending is currently unplayable (it was either hastily removed or meant to be part of a Halloween DLC) and fandom is split as to weather or not it's canon.

Yep.

I don't actually play the game, but I think there's supposed to be a trans dad and idk if any of them identify as bi in the game, so I wrote the LGBTQ acroynym without thinking about it, and without thinking to take out the L considering that the game is entirely about dating and romancing DILFs. (And helping your own teenage daughter.)

I just play it and ignore fandom. Honestly, your best bet is to try and search for fic with the -cult thing. That way you can weed some of it out.
