(Anonymous) 2018-01-04 09:09 am (UTC)(link)I was just like, WTF? Did the show seriously just call it "twisted" that a guy could conceivably be having boyfriend troubles? Yes, yes it did.
I mean, I'm sure there are plenty of way worse examples, but I was genuinely startled by it, because that wasn't even very long ago, and yet by modern standards it's like, "How did you guys think that line was cool"?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-04 12:11 am (UTC)(link)That said, there's a difference between 'this story was trying, or at the very least wasn't negative' (i.e. maybe The Seekers, for my Western analogy?) and the other thing. The other thing can get fucked - there's enough media in the world to enjoy things without watching those that perpetuate the worst of our cultural and societal history - but if they're capital G 'Great' shows you're mostly enjoying except for the parts that are products of their time. Well. I don't know. In 50 years, we're going to look back and wince at how out of touch the media we're consuming now is, right? Hopefully?

And it also depends on if the thing was actually trying in some aspect, just by today's standards they would obviously come across as lacking.

What it does make me worry about is whats going to happen in 50 years? What shit do we consider to be perfectly rational and beyond question today that will be wildly out of place in the future?
But then there's also a degree of comfort in that. The future, if it remembers any of us at all, will remember none of us as good people, not even the people who take such overwhelming pride in how much better they are than me. They, too, will be considered monstrous by the standard of future people. Except, I suppose, future people like me who, don't give a fuck. People like me in the future will look the most kindly on the people who hate me today.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-04 02:07 am (UTC)(link)I love some old movies, but they do grate on my nerves sometimes for this reason.

Different people are going to have different personal thresholds for that kind of thing.
If someone calls you snowflakey or an SJW on that, I cant help suspecting that they're the kind of person who finds all of the isms in older media a feature, not a bug.
