Whoaaaaaaa, I didn't know he used to be handsome!

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just confused because it seemed as though you were suggesting that OP is only upset because their life doesn't resemble a TV show.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean it's not like his face is falling off. He's just ugly. So I don't see how it's a cautionary tale about the "dangers" of too much plastic surgery. Unless I missed something and he's been in and out of the hospital with complications.

Not weird at all!

And others will whine about the whining?

Re: What fictional child character would you want to adopt?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel old. I'm to the point where teen characters who make bad choices and face bad consequences as a result (or otherwise just unluckily go through a lot of bad shit) cause me to go maternal and want to adopt/save them.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. I'm tired of collectively ignoring the fact that having biological kids is objectively a bad selfish decision most of the time in our current world. I feel sorry for the people I know who absolutely intellectually knew that but responded to their biological clocks and now have daily anxiety attacks about how the world has about a 25% chance of not going down the shitter before they're even dead.

It's not the slash itself that's the problem (unless tinhatting is involved), but there's a lot of real-world homophobia and biphobia that goes alongside slash and m/m romance fandoms. Shipping m/m doesn't make one's work immune from criticism by gay and bi men, doesn't absolve one of relationship homophobia and biphobia, and it doesn't make one the savior of m/m lit and entitled to throw a shitfit when LGBT literary awards prefer LGBT authors.

"I can think of plenty of mainstream shows with women choosing not to have kids"

*cites ONE show where half the female leads have kids*

I'm sorry, but this made me giggle. :)

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's almost like negativity breeds negativity or something.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It is absolutely NOT. For one, wtf. For another, have a look at countries that suddenly had a drop in birth rate and now have massively aging populations and all the societal problems that go with that. Ask, say, Japan how that's working out for them.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. I didn't realize that disliking something in the media meant you were evading responsibility for your own emotions. Do you not know a lot of people who have opinions about the things they watch, or...?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
if I'm not the one making the ridiculous claim that all female fictional characters are eventually pushed into having children despite having actively said earlier they don't want kids, the onus really isn't on me to write a thesis negating that.

I have wavered back and forth over the years on whether or not I want kids. I don't want biological kids for health reasons, but at this point, I'd be okay if I had a partner who has kids from another relationship. I'd also be okay if I was with a partner who 100% didn't want kids and doesn't have them.

Get real idiot.

Asking case would be a lot more effective than posting here.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
this. OP, sorry, but it's one thing if you aren't interested in storylines involving women having kids or wish there would be more representation of proudly childless women. But it's a weird thing to get worked up about.

Seeing the slow death of any standards about basic punctuation or proofreading before you post is incredibly sad.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-27 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
They didn't have a drop in birth rate shortly before a probable environmental collapse. We could, technically, take care of the huge population on this planet just fine, but the way things are going that's just not gonna happen unless there's a goddamn massive coup.

I find it obnoxious when fandom gets up in arms about two teenagers dating because there's maybe two or three years age difference between them. I even agree that between your average 14-year-old and average 17-year-old, there's probably some maturity difference and I wouldn't recommend it irl. But it's also hardly an abnormal, perverted, unethical occurrence. It's perfectly biologically typical for teens to be attracted to each other. No need to get up in arms about it. Especially in like... anime, where the ages are often somewhat arbitrary.

I used to hate this trope because I was 100% certain I would never ever want children (and I still do hate it to some extent depending on how it's handled), but the older I've gotten the more tolerable it gets especially as I'm now experiencing it myself.

It's a very relatable trope for a lot of people, and I suspect especially so for older people. Even if they don't ever deal with that whole biological clock thing, plenty of people have some sort of equivalent midlife crisis when they realize that they've changed over time and spent decades building one life when ultimately they wound up wanting another. It's really easy to say that you never want kids or you want to focus on your career when you're a teenager or twenty-something, but dealing with regret about it decades later is hard and often painful. Having kids and not having kids are both decisions that can't be undone after a certain point.

I know a guy who is financially stable. Had a great job, house, marriage. Lost it all a year after finally having a kid. The pressure of having a kid made him snap. His wife left him and now he's being shuffled back and forth between a mental hospital and a homeless shelter. Having money is only one small aspect of being able to raise kids. Having a kids seems to be pretty terrible in general (lots of people reporting depression or marriage strain, or becoming abusive or a list of other things) no matter how put together your life is.

I used to adamantly not want them. Now I'm neutral. Some days I still don't want them, some days I do.

Agreed. I also hate the chapter in the sequel where he convinces her to put down the book.

The similar scene in Moods is worse because what's-his-name isn't even Sylvia's father figure, he's just an older dude telling her not to read some book without engaging in a discussion about its qualities.
