I read this and automatically wanted to be your friend, anon. ;o; I'm so happy someone else is the same way that I am. (I don't mean that in a bad way. I want you to get better as well, of course.) I don't go to a psychiatrist, and I don't know if I have the same disorder, but I end up making myself cry before I can manage to build up enough courage to join a fandom or to prevent myself from going into a corner and trying to fade into the wall every time someone looks at me weird.

145. I’m so there with you! I’ve always felt that Miyako got totally jipped. The fact of the matter is, as a children’s TV show, the writers had to come up with some sort of morale to browbeat the kiddies with at the end of the season. So all the boys went off and got married and became very successful at their manly jobs – politics, technology, medicine, law enforcement. (Daisuke got to be a noodle chef. He’ll be on Throwdown with Bobby Flay one of these days, just you wait.) And the girls all got married and became very successful at their womanly jobs – fashion design, culinary arts, elementary education, and housewifey-ness. That’s what the ideal Japanese woman was supposed to do. Sora was the archetype of that throughout all of season 1 – much as I liked her at the time, now I think she was just an embodiment of how-girls-should-be and wasn’t allowed much of her own personality.

Now I sound all uber feminist, and that’s not my intention. It did bug me that not a single of the (albeit few in number) female characters got to do something not traditionally considered a “female” role. You could argue that these things were just what the characters wanted to do with their lives, and saying it was stereotyping them is degrading. But it did NOT make sense for Sora to run off and become a fashion designer. She never showed a lick of interest – Miyako and Hikari had more fashion sense than her. And back to the character of interest in your post – Miyako was a techie, a chem geek, assertive and dominating and damn smart. I can’t believe that she just dropped all the promise she had, and the passion she had for those areas, to be a soccer mom. Soccer moms rock. I could see any of the other three girls desiring that lifestyle. But it didn’t fit Miyako’s personality.

(On the other hand, Yamato’s freaking Apollo 11-worthy career came out of absolutely nowhere too, so maybe the writers were just cracked up when they smacked together that epilogue.)

I agree, Suzaku is a great, fleshed-out character. I don’t know why so many fans get up in arms when something happens with a character that they didn’t expect. Why is it a bad thing? Y’all get that it’s a story, and there’s no story without conflict, right? Lelou has done some damn awful things himself too. There was once a balance between Lelouch and Suzaku’s ideals; now they’ve broken down the dam of rationality and headed for extremism. It’s the act of desperate, scared kids. In the end, that’s what they are. I think it’s exciting, and I don’t get the hate for either character.

(Also, honestly, though I’ve loved Suzie from the start, he could be annoying when he was spouting off his naïve speeches episode after episode. Once he actually started trying, and failing, to uphold his own beliefs – that’s when he became human, relatable, and likable.)

You cannot convince me that the careers for all the characters at the end were not chosen by producers blindfolding themselves and throwing darts at a board.

Actually, they hit 'housewife' for Ken first, but when Miyako hit it later they figured they'd have those two shack up and call it good enough. HAND TO GOD, TRUEFAX.
