130. They exist. They're just not easy to find. Though the whole point of yaoi is the pr0n, which is why you don't usually get the high quality stories. You may want to look into the soft core soft. Those tend to focus more on the story than the pr0n. However the boys tend to look like 12 year old girls in those, so you're kind of damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Have you ever read Sakende Yaruze? I think that's got a very good story and it focuses on older people *gasp*. The works of Akemi Yoshida are another good example, but I think it's mostly hinty works from her. Nothing concrete. Still I'll recc Banana Fish to anyone, for any reason.

Try recc communities? There are good ones that give detailed descriptions of the stories. It might help you make a decision.

Also, I recommend ANYTHING by Fumi Yoshinaga. There is pr0n in some of her stories but they're usually very complex and interesting stories.

Deux released an interesting BL story recently. It was called Seduce Me After The Show. The art is gorgeous, the men look like men and the story was really captivating.

Seriously, that's ... pretty understandable, really. The way media portrays the "zipperless fuck" is nothing compared to the way fanfic portrays the first time as utterly magical and wonderful and perfect and mutually satisfying. I can definitely see how setting the bar so unrealistically high could be a bit daunting for someone without no experience. So I don't think the secret is very silly at all, honestly. Be brave, find the right person, and forget every fanfic you ever read.

(The secret poster, on the other hand, is exceedingly silly for being sloppy enough to let a dumbass mistake like loose/lose slip through to screw up the whole thing. ;P )

109, 120, 133, 176: WTF, is it Dr Horrible day? This fandom is rivaling Phoenix Wright, Death Note, or Twilight for sheer output of secrets. Anyway: (109) I love NPH's voice; (120) I knew I'd like Dr Horrible, but I had no idea I'd be so obsessed with it. It is truly awesome; (133) LOL I saw so many of those shirts at Comic Con, it rocked! I also saw a bunch of Captain Hammers and even a few people in full Dr Horrible getup. ILU fandom; (176) To each their own, but I disagree with your friend, especially the "sexist" claim. No, Penny was not a fully fleshed-out character, and yes, she existed as an ancillary character to Billy's storyline, but - so did Captain Hammer! This was Billy's story, and they were supporting characters. Penny was just a symbol, the physical manifestation of Billy's soul, and she wasn't supposed to be anything else. Just like Captain Hammer was a symbol, and wasn't supposed to be anything else.

114 - I usually don't mind Yoite, but yeah, he gets on my nerves more often than not recently - somehow it's worse in the anime, probably due to the music and voices. ._.) And the focus on him (oh yeah, and Miharu) in the manga is not something I appreciate either. If I didn't like the story so much and wasn't so invested in other characters (Raikou, Gau, Tobari, Yukimi, etc.) I would've stopped reading the manga by now. (His, uh, condition was the last straw. I mean, for the love of god, what was the point of that, other than giving him yet another reason to feel alienated and angsty? I mean, it doesn't seem like the mangaka wants to follow up on it...)

130 - There's plenty of BL manga out there that have both plot and guys who can't pass for 15-y-o. girls. Keep looking (and not necessarily in the mainstream).

130. Smut is where an otherwise great piece of fiction can become quite repetitive. Maybe because it’s the point where many Yaoi authors begin writing about an activity they themselves have never experienced, and are thus more likely to borrow from other fictional depictions? But this is also a problem with fiction depicting heterosexual relationships, as well. Smut is oftentimes fairly repetitive, which makes it boring. Of course, there is great smut out there as well.

Still, 9 times out of 10 I’m scrolling down going, “Uh huh, uh huh, but who is the Masked Fedora and how is his secret identity related to the failure of Protocol GHI – B?”

The secret talked about manga/anime - and IMO the reason is that a) most of the readers are more interested in smut than plot, and b) because of a) this is what BL publishers are focusing on (see magazines featuring basically nothing but one-shot BL pr0n). This is what the readers want, this is what the readers get. Also, BL was never meant to be realistic (which is something many people fail to understand). It's just fantasy by women for women. That's why it doesn't matter whether a mangaka has ever experienced what she's writing about or not. That's simply not the point.
