Same.

I think you're misrepresenting what people are saying but also, at this point, fucking whatever

Honestly, it’s not that different from what fandom did to George Lucas.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
But for Pete's sake - it's entirely reasonable to dislike the prequels. They're not very good movies. People took it too far, nerds are performative weirdos always, but fandom didn't 'do' anything to George Lucas. What's this narrative. Where's it come from.

It's her own fault for kowtowing to them. If she had finished the series and left it alone, nobody would be bugging her about it. But as long as she keeps milking it, fans will insist on her changing it to suit their opinions.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I half agree with you. It's her own fault for kowtowing to them. She should have kept on without trying for more diversity. Trying is just blood in the water to the social justice sharks.

It's her story. if she fucking want to write there's no fucking reason why she shouldn't.

JK Rowling is not any more your bitch than GRRM is.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that could be a part of it. I remember the gay Dumbledore and black Hermione things seeming like she was trying to appeal to the same people dragging her through the mud right now.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen anyone call her the scum of the earth. Even for chilling with Depp, who most of fandom believes to be a domestic abuser!
I have seen an increasing number of people wish that she'd pull her head in and leave well enough alone, though.

This. People disagreeing with her decisions is not the same as calling her the scum of the Earth. People are allowed to disagree with her. I haven't heard much of anything about people sending her personal hate personally the way people have to Lucas and Rian Johnson and Star Wars actors and such.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations on your well curated internet experience. I, sadly, have definitely seen this.

We're going to act as though POC and LGBTQ people didn't exist in 1997?

I'm not saying the books are abhorrently wrong as they are, they're a bit of a relic, but wake up.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
literally no one is pretending that or proposing to pretend that, what they are saying is diversity was not as much a topic in the public consciousness in 1997 as it is in 2018 and that is why an author back then might not have paid as much or any attention to if their book is diverse as they might have with the current awareness

it's not hard to grasp when you're not being deliberately obtuse

That would be an inappropriate way to act, considering POC are in the books and a lead character was confirmed to be gay.

lmao how are the books in any way a relic. They could well be released today and literally no one would throw a fit about it.

No, we are going to act like LGBT people would not have been allowed in children's literature in 1997, because that's true. eg: Scholastic banning KAA from saying a char was a lesbian in the mid 2000s.

(POC were, and they definitely are in HP. Harry's first girlfriend was Asian and his first sort-of-date was Indian for heaven's sake)

people keep forgetting Jo started writing them in the late 80s/early 90s. The HP books are heavily political - for the stuff that was important for Jo when she was working in Amnesty International in the 80s! That's why there's so much about totalitarian governments and people whose entire families are killed for speaking up against them, useless bureaucracies, people disappearing, political murders, torture and illegal imprisonment, a metaphor for stigmatizing illnesses like AIDS, veterans without access to mental health services, etc.

Not to mention Scholastic was banning LGBT characters in children's books as far as the mid 2000s (just ask KA Applegate). Even Rick Riordan's lauded Canon Gay Kid was a retcon that happened *after 8 books*, in fucking 2013.

So yeah, don't blame people for not having a fucking time machine.

To me she was okay as a writer and someone sharing her opinions online until she did not go off-kilter into flamey-wanky-drama zone. Sooooo ... she basically tries to stir shit and listens to no one but herself which is fairly standard as far as current political climate dictates. People mentioned to me her North American tidbits and apparently that was worse than Winnetou. The whole oddness of hers started when Scotland had independence referendum and she opposed it in very internet-trolly ways, she kicked it up by 100 with Brexit (and I dislike both and voted same as her). She is still not awful by human standards or anything - pretty meh.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
JKR is one of those people who's monumentally talented at making everything worse when she tries to "fix" things than if she'd just left the originally sort of problematic content alone-- see: whatever the hell she thought she was doing with Native Americans in the American magic school lore, and turning a snake into an Asian woman

This. She doesn't have a time machine. It is best to be critical of her current work and there is plenty to be critical about.
